EED6- TEACHING SCIENCE IN THE INTERMEDIATE GRADES

LESSON PLAN DEMONSTRATION ACTIVITY

I. Objectives
 Identify stars according to color, size and brightness.
 The students may have the jigsaw puzzle

II. Learning Objectives

A. Subject Matter: Characteristics of stars
1. Concept
 Stars vary in color, size and brightness. Stars maybe blue, white, yellow, red
and black in color. In size, some stars are bigger or smaller than others. Not all
stars that appear at night shine with the same brightness.
2. Process Skills
 Observing, Communicating and Classifying
B. Reference: Science Book
C. Materials: laptop and PowerPoint presentation
D. Value Focus: Appreciate the works of God

III. Learning Procedure

A. Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer
2. Greetings
B. Developmental Activities

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

1. Review
Class, what device is use to magnify and
view distance objects? Ma’am, we call it a telescope

Correct.

Can you give me examples of a telescope? The different types of telescope are:
1. Refracting telescope
2. Reflecting telescope
3. Spectroscope
4. Radio telescope
That’s right
2. Motivation
Class, do you want to play a game?
Yes ma’am
Good, Now I will group you into
two. Each group will select a
leader and a secretary.

(grouping the class)

Group1: Betelgeuse, Polaris
Group2: Sirius, Capella
Have you already selected your leader and
secretary?

Just a reminder, when we’re having a

group activity, discuss with your group
mate silently. Avoid disturbing other
groups. Do you understand?
Yes Ma’am
The leaders and the assistant will
represent each group.

I have here a jigsaw puzzle, what you’re

going to do is to arrange this puzzle to
form a figure.

I will just give you fifteen seconds to

assemble the puzzle.

The representatives, please come forward.

(selected students come forward)
Your time starts now!
(selected students will assemble the
jigsaw puzzle)
Wow very good. Give our winning group a
firecracker clap.
1,2,3,4…..clap

Class what figure is form in the puzzle?

A star teacher
Do you know what a star is?
A star is a ball of fire that can be seen
during at night.
That’s right, aside from that?
Stars is a huge ball of gas made of
hydrogen and helium.
Exactly. Can we consider our as a star?
Yes ma’am
Why do you think so?
Because the sun is a nearest star in our
planet.
Any other answer?
The sun gives off light and energy to our
planet
You are all correct class.

3. Presentation

May I call a volunteer?

A student comes forward to be volunteer.
I want you to dip the clean cotton to the
solution in the container. Gently rub the
moisten cotton to the cartolina.
The student will follow the instruction of
the teacher.
What word/words came out from the box
after rubbing the cotton from it?
The stars and its characteristics
That’s right very good! You may now go
back to your sit.

Group Capella, please read.

The stars and its characteristics
The star is a huge ball of gas made up of
hydrogen and helium. Then stars main
source of energy is by itself. Helium
provides the fuel that produces the light
energy of the star.

4. Discussion
There are three main characteristics of a
star the first one is color.

Have you sometimes observe the sky and

watched the stars at night?
Yes ma’am.

What have you observe? Do all stars have

the same color?
I notice that the stars have different
colors. Some are blue, others are red, and
also there is yellow and white one like
you’ve said before teacher.

Correct! Stars have different color, good to

know that you are all listen to me.
What do you think is the reason why the
stars have different colors?
Ma’am I think it is because of the

its temperature. The hottest star is bluish
in color. Next to temperature is the white
one, followed by the yellow star. Our sun is
a star the color of the surface is yellow.
Next to the yellow star is a red star.
Mostly, what we see in our sky during
night time are red stars and they are
coolest stars. When the stars dies because
it has no more fuels to burn, it’s because
death stars. That is black in color or also
known as the black hole.

Do you know what black hole is?

A black hole has a very huge gravitational

pull that it sucks all the near objects

Next characteristics of the star is

Brightness.

Do all stars shine the same?

Have you seen lines of lamp post in your No ma’am.

barangay or street?

Okay, let’s assume that the lamp post in Yes ma’am.

the streets are the stars. What do you
observe on the lamp post that are near
you?

They are much brighter and looks bigger,

How about the lamp post those are very teacher.
far? Are they brighter or looks dimmer
afar?

The lamp posts that far usually look less

bright because they look small afar.
Precisely. There are two factors that
determine the brightness of a star.

a. Luminosity- measures how much

the energy it gives off per unit in
time.
b. Distance- measures how far the
star is located from us.

The third characteristics of stars is size.

Do all stars have the same size?

No ma’am, stars have different size. There

are big stars, medium stars and dwarf
Very Good! Stars have different sizes, what stars.
happened if the stars is bigger? Does it
have shorter or longer life?

I think ma’am it has shorter life. Big stars

consume their energy more because of

The size affects the brightness of the stars.
If the star is too big, it will consume lots of
energy. The bigger the star is, the shorter
the life span is.

Do stars can also be called distant stars?

Why?

Yes, because our sun is a star, so the stars

that is far away from us can be called
distant suns
That’s it. Another question, why do you
think we cannot see the stars during day
time? Do stars only show at night?

The reason is that the light of the sun

outshines the brightness or the light of the
stars. That is why during daytime, we
cannot see stars when the sun is still up
there in the sky.
Very Good! Why do you think the stars
twinkle?

What about atmosphere? What’s the Ma’am, this is because of our atmosphere.
relation of the atmosphere in the twinkling
of stars?

Because the atmosphere is moving so the

Very Good children I thought now you light refracts from it causing the stars to
already understand all about our topic. twinkle.
Good to know that.

5. Generalization
So what can you say about stars? What is a
star?

Stars are huge ball of fire made up

hydrogen and helium. The stars are also
called distant sun because the sun is also a
star.
What are the main characteristics of a
star?

What about the color? These are color, brightness and size

The color determines the temperature of

the stars, from hottest to coolest?

Blue-white-yellow-red-black (black hole).

Excellent. How about the brightness?
What are the factors that affect it?

Luminosity and Distance.

What does luminosity measure?

Luminosity measures the energy that the

What about Distance? stars give off per unit in time.

Distance measures how far the stars is

located from us.
Very Good. What is the last characteristics
of the star? And what does it tell?

The size, it also affects the brightness and

the life of a star. The bigger the star is the
shorter life span it has.
Excellent! Why do stars twinkle?

Because the stars light is being refracted

or bent when it reach the earth’s
atmosphere. So we can see the stars
Very Good! twinkle.

6. Application
What do you think will happen if the stars
are too near to our planet? Or there are
more than two suns or in our solar
system?

Probable answers:
The earth will die because of excessive
heat coming from more than two suns
near us, or the planet will explode or melt
like an ice cream.

IV. Evaluation
Identify what is being described in the given items below.
1. Measures how far is located from us.
2. A gaseous ball of fire made up of helium and hydrogen
3. The scientific name for twinkling of stars
4. The color of the hottest star
5. Measures the energy it gives off per unit in time
6. It is also called “death star”
7. The movement of the atmosphere on earth
8. Nearest star on our planet.

V. Assignment
Observe the sky during night time. Answer the following on your notebook.
1. What color of the star has the majority in the sky?
2. Do the stars shine the same?
3. Why the stars called distance suns
