Evidence: Life from a wheelchair

Fuente: SENA

About 1 in every 100 people is handicapped and uses a wheelchair. Therefore,

there are about 80 million people in wheelchairs in the world. That is twice the
population of Colombia! But what is it like to live in a wheelchair?

Watch the video “Perfectly abled life on campus with a disability” in the next link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kr5hHmZbQHw

After you watch the video answer the following questions. Use any voice
recording software to record your answers and send the file as evidence.

Use mixed conditional sentences (at least 4 examples), the idioms, vocabulary
and ideas about flexibility and adaptability studied in this learning activity (at least
8 words from the vocabulary). Remember to use connectors and punctuation.

1. What does Ashley do?

Ashley is a general communications student at North University in Lowa.

2. How does her condition affect her daily activities and how does she
cope with
That?
It affects the time she wants to do the tasks and be responsible, her disability limits
her to be totally efficient, for example to arrive early to class, to be faster with
several tasks at the same time and she manages to leave the bedroom fifteen or
twenty minutes before, managing her wheelchair well and dedicating her energy to
always get ahead and also her parents help her in the house, at bath time and are
very attentive to her.

3. What is her attitude towards life? Does she feel disabled by certain
activities?

Her attitude towards life is persevering, she never complains and she encourages
herself just as she is. She longs for running, she feels worthy of it, she feels
disabled by the exercise of running. Although she considers that we all have
invisible disabilities, she never gives up.

4. How would your life be different if you were disabled and had to use a
wheelchair? What would be different for you? (Use mixed conditionals
in response.)

Answering this is a little sad, I never imagined it. I love walking, and being active. If I
was disabled, I would work harder to walk again, if I was disabled, I would develop
some talent and build it up. And it would be all different, because I love to be on the
move, I think you would have to give me advice if you were disabled, I would be
grateful to be here.

5. How do you react when you have to interact with a disabled person?

I react super well, she's not a different person, she doesn't need to be treated badly.

6. How can you contribute to improving the lives of people with

disabilities?

By being understanding and tolerant with their life, by supporting them in their
concerns, we can always find someone with some kind of disability.
