Bangladesh is a country of heavy rainfall that’s why floods is very common in here .Water-
logging has become a perennial problem for the residents of Dhaka city. It's become quite a
common scenario in Dhaka that an hours of heavy can brought Dhaka city to a near collapse. For
this reason, all throughout the capital is suffering miseries hours on end due to the long tailbacks
caused by severe traffic jams in the heavily inundated streets Water logging is one of the major
problems of the urban areas. With uncontrollable growth of population and unplanned
urbanization, the drainage and sewer facility are not developing Accordingly, This study aims
to do a case study of the current urban water logging in Bangladesh, trying to highlight the main
causes behind it, the influence of undertaken projects and people’s Perspective about the effects
of water logging in their urban areas. Bangladesh has historically relied on wetlands and the
gravity drainage system of canals which are linked to surrounding rivers. Before modernization,
these natural canals served as the mode of disposal of runoff water from floods and such, as well
as means of transportation. However, with time, due to rapid urbanization water bodies and flood
plains started being filled up especially towards the end of the 90s for various commercial and
industrial purposes and water retention capacity fell sharply along with the availability of public
spaces.
WATER LOGGING PROBLEM IN ZIGATOLA 3
Talking about my area Zigatola an hours of heavy rain can brought area in collapse. It’s a very
low land Area. Where lots of problem can be shown when heavy rain fall down. Problems like:
Traffic Jam, Sickness, Flood, Electricity Down, Bad Smell Everywhere, Waste management
Rainfall
Design rainfall storm intensity for the urban area is assessed from that of known design storm
intensity of Dhaka applying a conversion factor which relates the rainfall events between Dhaka
and reference station for the urban area. Rainfall induced flooding, meaning flood in Dhaka city
caused by local rainfall occurs in the built-up area of the city several times a year on a various
scale. The situation was severely aggravated because the natural drainage system, which conveys
storm runoff from the areas to the surrounding rivers were not fully operational and surface
runoff drainage and sewerage system were blocked due to huge volume of garbage and poly-
bags.
Flood
Flooding in Dhaka Metropolitan area can be classified into two types. One results from high
water levels of peripheral river system, thus rendering any natural drainage impossible. Another
is caused by high intensity storm rainfall runoff in the city area, which cause flooding also in
River System
Regional river system adjacent to the urban area is shown in Figure. The urban area lies
On the right bank of the River. The river system of this area is shown in Figure.
River carries storm water from major parts of the urban area and drains into river and finally to
Bay of Bengal. There are some low lying lands on the eastern part of the urban area which serves
as runoff destination of storm water from some parts of the urban area and finally route to river
system.
The solution
The obvious primary response to this problem should be addressing the main causes that creates
water logging; namely, the destruction of natural drainage system and water bodies, the lack of
The logged water becomes polluted with solid waste, silt and contaminants that are washed off
from roads. The increase in volume and rate of logged water causes erosion and siltation. It
Becomes a burden for the inhabitants of that urban area, leading to unhygienic environment and
Conclusions
The relatively low lying area of the urban area is flood affected from internal rain feed. The part
on the north and south of urban area is affected by the internal rain fed flood. They are much
unplanned and lack in systematic drainage network. Some localized places of the urban area
suffer from inundation due to internal storm water drainage congestion, and water logging in few
places in absence of adequate gravity drainage provision and routes and also for choked up with
solid wastes. Lack in social awareness is a huge concern for smooth functioning of the drains by
taking all those steps we can actually reduce of the problems caused by this water logging
problem.
