Question:
What is meant by total loop drop and nominal flow rate in proportional and servo valve selection
and sizing?
Answer:
The nominal flow rate found in the model code of a proportional or servo valve is determined by
the flow through the valve at a set pressure drop with the valve shifted 100%. The pressure drop is
TOTAL “loop drop” across the valve P to A AND B to T, or P to B AND A to T.
Proportional valves (4WRA, 4WRE, 4WRZ, 4WRLE…) have a spool (with notches) in a housing
configuration; while servo (4WS2EM) or servo-solenoid (4WRPEH) valves have a spool/sleeve
configuration.
Bosch Rexroth proportional valves are rated @ 10 bar (145 psi) total pressure drop or 5 bar per
spool land. Bosch Rexroth servo valves are rated @ 70 bar (1015 psi) drop, or 35 bar per land.
Particularly with proportional valves, a 10 bar drop is not sufficient for many applications, the “loop
drop” is a reference value to measure flow capability, since proportional and servo valves are
inherently throttles. (Please note, 10 bar is the Rexroth standard, review competitive data sheets,
as 8 bar or other values may be used!) Improper calculation of deceleration pressure requirements
may yield a valve “over-sized” and poor in control resolution. System pressure drop, max flow
requirements, accel/decel forces/pressures and flow curves must be used to determine nominal
flow rate and proper valve size.
Flow curves and data sheets are attached for 4WREE (proportional) and
4WS2EM 10 (Servo with spool/sleeve) as examples.

Command value: A positive command value 0 to +10 V (or 12 to 20 mA) at D and the reference potential at E results in a flow
from P to A and B to T.
A negative command value 0 to –10 V (or 12 to 4 mA) at D and the reference potential at E results in a flow
from P to B and A to T.
For a valve with 1 solenoid on side a (e.g. spool variants EA and WA) a positive command value 0 to +10 V
(or 4 to 20 mA) at D and the reference potential at E results in a flow from P to B and A to T.
Actual value: Actual value 0 to +10 V resp. 12 to 20 mA at F and the reference potential at C results in flow from P to A

When topping up more than 10 % of the tank capacity, flush-

The use of a directional valve with port in accordance with 18 90 2
ISO 4401-05-05-0-05 is suited better than a flushing plate.
This valve can also be used for flushing the actuator ports.
