Question:
What is meant by total loop drop and nominal flow rate in proportional and servo valve selection
and sizing?

Answer:
The nominal flow rate found in the model code of a proportional or servo valve is determined by
the flow through the valve at a set pressure drop with the valve shifted 100%. The pressure drop is
TOTAL “loop drop” across the valve  P to A AND B to T, or P to B AND A to T.
Proportional valves (4WRA, 4WRE, 4WRZ, 4WRLE…) have a spool (with notches) in a housing
configuration; while servo (4WS2EM) or servo-solenoid (4WRPEH) valves have a spool/sleeve
configuration.
Bosch Rexroth proportional valves are rated @ 10 bar (145 psi) total pressure drop or 5 bar per
spool land. Bosch Rexroth servo valves are rated @ 70 bar (1015 psi) drop, or 35 bar per land.
Particularly with proportional valves, a 10 bar drop is not sufficient for many applications, the “loop
drop” is a reference value to measure flow capability, since proportional and servo valves are
inherently throttles. (Please note, 10 bar is the Rexroth standard, review competitive data sheets,
as 8 bar or other values may be used!) Improper calculation of deceleration pressure requirements
may yield a valve “over-sized” and poor in control resolution. System pressure drop, max flow
requirements, accel/decel forces/pressures and flow curves must be used to determine nominal
flow rate and proper valve size.

Flow curves and data sheets are attached for 4WREE (proportional) and
4WS2EM 10 (Servo with spool/sleeve) as examples.

Electrical connection, external control electronics

Type 4WS2EM 10-5X... The electrical connection can be designed as parallel or serial connection. For reasons of
operational safety and the resulting lower coil inductivity, we recommend the connection
in parallel.
The E-F bridge can be used for the electrical determination of the correct connection of
A the plug-in connector and/or for the identification of cable break.
Coil A
C Connection in parallel:
B In the mating connector, connect contact A with B and C with D.
Coil B
D Connection in series:
E In the mating connector, connect contact B with C.
F Electrical control from A (+) to D (–) results in the flow direction P to A and B to T. Inverted
PE electrical control results in the flow direction P to B and A to T.
E → F = bridge

Command value: Command value at the mating connector port D = positive against mating connector port E results
in flow from P to A and B to T.
Measuring output F has positive signal against ⊥.
Command value at the mating connector port D = negative against mating connector port E results
in flow from P to B and A to T.
Measuring output F has negative signal against ⊥.
Measuring output: The voltage or current signal is proportional to the control spool stroke.

Important: Electric signals taken out via control electronics (e.g. actual value) must not be used for switching off
safety-relevant machine functions!
