THE PROPOSAL

THE IMPACT OF USING ICT IN TEACHING AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES ON

PRE-SCHOOL STUDENTS

INTRODUCTION

Technology has been integrated into every aspect of modern life. It is not possible in all but
the most remote cultures to not be exposed to some sort of technology on a daily basis.
Technology allows humans to connect without the limitations of geography, it makes
processes more efficient and it supplements the intellect and effectiveness of the human
brain. Although it has a very significant number of very positive attributes, the populace as a
whole often does not consider it also has negative attributes as well. Youth are particularly
susceptible to these potentially negative effects.

Education in its general sense is form of learning, in which knowledge, skills and habits of a
group of people are transferred from one generation to the next through teaching, training or
research. The advancements of Information and multimedia technology, and the use of
internet as a new way of teaching, has a made a revolutionary change in the traditional
teaching process. Using electronic media such as computer videoconferencing, audio,
internet, interactive TV and satellite as medium to conduct electronic learning (e-learning),
has fueled the opportunity to introduce a new learning environment and scenarios to potential
benefiters (Hung and Cho, 2008). ICT is the acquisition, processing, storage and
discrimination of vocal, pictorial, textual and numerical information by a microelectronics-
based combination of computing and telecommunications. It is a diverse set of technology
tools and resources used to create assess ,store , transmit and manage information and
communicate the desired information from one place to another .it includes computers
broadcasting technologies , digital cameras, video recorder, tape recorder, LCD projector ,
over head projector, CD-ROM.DVD, computer software etc. we enjoy various services like
internet , cloud computing , teleconferencing , video conferencing ,fax, power point
presentation , E-learning mobile learning ,blended learning ,distance learning etc. These ICTs
have penetrated & permeated into our very lives that it had changed our lifestyle, the way we
socialize, relate to each other, work and even learn. It has seeped into the core and become a
necessity and added quality to life. ICTs have the potential to raise the quality of education.
(Rindharwon, 2011).

Now a day’s technology is becoming the medium for teaching and learning. this technology
enabled instructional method is aimed to improve quality of education. It’s important to begin
a child’s education early in life to help build a strong foundation for future years of learning
.they loss interest quickly in addition to traditional method of learning such as book reading,
a variety of on line learning resources provided an atmosphere of fun and interaction
designed to keep children engaged. E- Learning has become an integral part of education. In
conclusion, beginning online learning for children at an early age is an important step to
consider, given that an education can lead to a more successful lifestyle, better social
integration, and greater self –confidence.

LITERATURE REVIEW

Use of ICT in Preschool Education

According to Burnett (2010) today's children grow up in a textual landscape where they have
a variety of ways to interact and play actively in environments created through digital
technology such as computer games, mobile phones and virtual worlds. Studies on the use of
ICT in early childhood show that exposure to multimedia computers can stimulate and
motivate children to learn better, faster and more effectively. Early childhood exposure to
ICT and digital technology can build critical thinking, increase creativity, explore various
fields, apply knowledge and skills in situations, while increasing interest and attention. Many
basic concepts in learning can be conveyed effectively through teaching and learning
programs using multimedia computers (Maier & Warren 2002; Parker 2008). According to
Alessi and Trollip (2001) learning through ICT has many advantages.

Among the advantages are students can achieve learning materials at any time and in
wherever they are; learning materials can be linked from additional sources available
worldwide; management and updating materials becomes increasingly easy and fast; and
various channel forms communication can be provided for student use and teachers. Jonassen
(2003) is of the view hypertext and hypermedia facilities in ICT can provide a learning
environment that constructive. The use of ICT makes fun information retrieval process and
entertain. Interactivity enables the process training or teaching is carried out according to
suitability, needs and tastes of students.

As Lowther et al. (2008) have stated that there are three important characteristics are needed
to develop good quality teaching and learning with ICT: autonomy, capability, and creativity.
Autonomy means that students take control of their learning through their use of ICT. In this
way, they become more capable of working by themselves and with others. Teachers can also
authorize students to complete certain tasks with peers or in groups. Through collaborative
learning with ICT, the students have more opportunity to build the new knowledge onto their
background knowledge and become more confident to take risks and learn from their
mistakes.
Further, Serhan (2009) concluded that ICT fosters autonomy by allowing educators to create
their own material, thus providing more control over course content than is possible in a
traditional classroom setting. With regard to capability, once students are more confident in
learning processes, they can develop the capability to apply and transfer knowledge while
using new technology with efficiency and effectiveness.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

This study aims to identify the use of ICT in teaching and its impact on behaviour among
preschool students.

RESEARCH QUESTION
The findings of this study will be used as information to answer the following research
questions:
1. What is the level of readiness of preschool teachers in teaching using ICT?
2. Is there a relationship between work results and behaviour in student learning using ICT?
3. Is there a relationship between work results and behaviour in student learning that does not
use ICT?
4. Are there differences in the achievement of work and behaviour in student learning as a
result of using ICT and without ICT?
RESEARCH METHODS & METHODOLOGY
The investigation was carried out on students. The subject was selected from those pre-
schools having ICT facilities in Melaka, Malaysia. 100 students were included in the study.
Self-made questionnaire was used for sample survey. Tabulation was done with the help of
Microsoft excel & analysis was done by SPSS (20th version). t test was used for data
analysis.
