CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM
Introduction
Ever since we were little, we have always been encouraged to go outside and do
one thing and that is to get some fresh air. Fresh air is said to have the ability to provoke
and awaken our senses, serving as an effective heat and body heat regulator, helping us to
control smells in the indoor air and to have a “good, fresh smell” in our home, and
Fresh air is indeed a profound link to our experience of being and feeling alive as
a human being (Hauge, 2010). But due to the massive air pollution caused by our
negligence and different human activities fresh air seems to be out of reach whenever we
go outside.
However people still wanted to have fresh air to breathe in even though they are
inside their houses or they simply wants to improve the indoor air quality that they have
and that is when the air freshener becomes in trend. In this modern times air fresheners
have become undoubtly popular, many homes and businesses use air fresheners to
remove unwanted odor or create a desired smell. Little did they know that this benefit
comes with exposure to a mixture of chemicals that are released from the air freshener.
Some of these chemicals could affect our health, especially for people who are sensitive
Because of this emerging problem the researchers decided to look into the
viability of the combined lemon peel extract and rosemary leaves as an effective natural
A study conducted by Dev (2016), states that Lemon (Citrus x Limon) is a hybrid
of the plant genus Citrus, with the main characteristic of thorny branches, and white
flowers with purple edges, the acidic juicy fruit is oval in shape, has an aromatic rind that
is yellow when ripe and has a prominent bulge or nipple on the blossom end. Lemon is
also an important medicinal plant of the Rutaceae family that originated in tropical and
subtropical Southeast Asia. It has a distinctive berry with its internal parts divided into
segments. It is cultivated mainly for alkaloids which show anticancer activities and the

Lamiaceae), commonly known as rosemary, is one of the most popular perennial culinary
herbs cultivated all over the world. Both fresh and dried leaves of rosemary have been
used for their characteristic aroma in food cooking or consumed in small amount as
herbal tea, while rosemary extracts are routinely employed as natural antioxidant to
improve the shelf life of perishable foods. In the latter case, the European Union has
approved rosemary extract as a safe and effective natural antioxidant for food
countries even far beyond its native Mediterranean region where it grows wild. Among

which makes them more potent ingredient in making a natural air freshener.

Lemon (Citrus limon) is the third most important species of citrus after orange
and mandarin, with a production totaling more than 4.4 million tons during the
2001/2002 season. Argentina with 1.2 million tones is currently the world’s largest
producer of lemons. The peel is a by-product of lemon juice processing, with a high
potential use. Two different tissues are found in what is colloquially called lemon peel,
flavedo and albedo. Flavedo is the peel’s outer layer, whose colour varies from green to
yellow. It is a rich source of essential oils which have been used since ancient times by
the flavour and fragrance industry. Albedo is the major component of lemon peel, and is
a spongy and cellulosic layer laid under flavedo. The thickness of the albedo fluctuates
according to several variables, among them variety and degree of ripeness. Albedo has
high dietary fiber content, and if added to new meat products permits to formulate
healthier products like beef burgers, bologna and dry cured sausages. Furthermore, the

Flavonoids can function as direct antioxidants and free radical scavengers, and have the
capacity to modulate enzymatic activities and inhibit cell proliferation. In plants, they
appear to play a defensive role against invading pathogens, including bacteria, fungi and
viruses Flavonoids are generally present in glycosylated forms in plants, and the sugar

very rare in other plants In addition the fiber of citrus fruit also contains bioactive
compounds, such as polyphenols, the most important being vitamin C (or ascorbic acid),
and they certainly prevent and cure vitamin C deficiency-the cause of scurvy .
Antimicrobial activity of the peel extract is directly concerned with the components that
they contain. The studies showed that essential oils, protopine and corydaline alkaloids,
are effective toward various bacteria. Nevertheless, other active terpenes, as well as
essential oils.
Based from the findings of the study of Dhanavade et. al (2011), they said that the
peel of Citrus fruits is a potential source of essential oils. Citrus essential oils have been
used as flavoring agents in foods, beverages, and liquors and as aromatic agents in
perfumery, soap and other household products. The Citrus fruits possess high amounts of
bioactive compounds which can influence human health such as vitamin C, carotenoids,
flavonoids, limonoids, essential oils, coumarins, acridone alkaloids, soluble fibres and
minerals.
Related to this is the study conducted by Palazzolo et. al (2013), which states that
the quality and quantity of citrus limon peel essential oils (EOs) depend on many factors,
such as the nature of the fruit itself, provenance, genotype, soil type and climate but also
on the extraction process. Essential oils (EOs, also called volatile or ethereal oils) are
aromatic oily liquids characterized by a strong odour and produced by different plant
material (flowers, buds, seeds, leaves, twigs, bark, herbs, wood, fruits and roots) as
secondary metabolites. EOs are liquid, volatile, limpid and rarely coloured, soluble in
organic solvents generally with a lower density than water. They are very complex

citrus peel are very complex matrices containing numerous compounds of different
chemical classes. These compounds are generally divided in two fractions: the volatile
fraction, which is the most representative and ranges between 85 and 99% in the different
cold-pressed citrus oils, and the non-volatile residue, containing fatty acids, sterols,
which ranges between 1 and 15%. The volatile constituents are a mixture of monoterpene

In the study of Abramovic (2012), it was proved that the content of total phenolics
in rosemary leaf extracts ranged from 99 mg/g to 318 mg/g. Rosemary leaf extracts

the presence of carnosic acid as the main bioactive antimicrobial compound in rosemary

than rosmarinic acid. From those results, it is obvious that the rosemary leaf extracts have
different modes of action and exhibited stronger biological activity against gram-positive

compounds, they may be produced such that their antioxidative function is enhanced.
Therefore the rosemary used principally for their antioxidant properties are selectively
increased and characterized by their carnosol and carnosic acid content (antioxidant),
acids, volatiles, phenolic diterpenes, as well as some protein matter and lipophilic
substances. Studies have shown that the concentration of carnosic acid and carnosol in
the final extract will be affected by the starting composition of the dried rosemary leaves,
as well as the extraction process. While the total content of carnosic acid and carnosol is
variable depending on the particular extract of rosemary, the composition when the
intended function is antioxidant comprises not less than 90% of the total of the two
phenolic diterpenes.
Solomon (2016), has recently tested the potential anxiolytic- and antidepressant-like
behaviour effect on adult male mice. The result showed that oral intake of rosemary tea
for 4 weeks has shown a positive effect without altering memory learning when assessed
by passive avoidance, elevated plus maze and forced swimming tests. In an olfactory
antidepressant-like effect and is also able to abolish ache alterations although the spatial
learning deficit induced by the procedure was not altered. It is also worth noting that
other components of rosemary, such as essential oil constituents, are known to alter brain
function at therapeutic doses. For example, the cognitive enhancing power of rosemary
component, 1,8-cineole, has been well documented. In agreement with these observed
effects of the isolated compounds, the crude extract of rosemary has been shown to

“Effects of Inhaled Rosemary Oil on Subjective Feelings and Activities of the Nervous
System.” He therefore conclude that Rosemary oil is essentially the extract of a small
light blue flower along the with extract from the leaves to yield the fragrance of the
essential oil, which is sometimes used as an ingredient in perfumes as well as for a food
flavoring. Rosemary oil has a powerful, refreshing herbal smell with the appearance of
clear water and a viscous texture. Rosemary oil has also been shown to be beneficial in
the treatment of certain medical problems such as acne, baldness, rheumatic pain, and
circulatory blockages. In addition, rosemary oil has a pronounced action on the brain and
central nervous system (CNS) and is a powerful tool in helping to clear the mind and for
increasing mental awareness. It has also been shown to possess excellent brain-
stimulating properties as well as an aid for memory improvement. The main chemical
components of rosemary oil are α-pinene, camphor, and 1,8-cineole. The general
depressant, antimicrobial, astringent, and stimulatory actions. The results of the study
suggest the occurrence of the positive stimulatory effects of rosemary oil inhalation.
These findings provide evidence that brain wave activities, autonomic nervous system
responses, and mood states can all be modified with rosemary oil inhalation. The results
support that there are medicinal benefits of rosemary when used as a stimulant in
2. What are the benefits that can be derived from using a natural air freshener?
According to Aghaisuoti (2016), the main benefit of the natural air freshener is to
eliminate odors, but there are still many other benefits air fresheners can offer other than
stopping an unpleasant smell. Home owners, office and businesses are usually alike in
their use air fresheners. Air fresheners are a quick fix to bad smells, and may seem like a
huge weight off your shoulders once they are emitted. Hence, he stated few more reasons
why he suggests that we should use air fresheners. First is for its flexibility; air fresheners
can be installed virtually anywhere in your building. It is designed not just for restrooms
but also for use in areas such as offices, meeting rooms, care homes, hotels, reception
areas, school classrooms or anywhere that a pleasant fragrance is desired. The air
freshener comes furnished with a fan which can be used in high traffic areas and turned
off in less visited areas so you get the perfect amount of fragrance circulating in the place
on installation or spray.
Aghaisuoti (2016), also claims that most air fresher services use natural essential oils
to make their scents. The freshener contains no volatile organic compounds or aerosol
light, fresh fragrance behind, wherein we do not have to worry about getting burned out
on one scent; most air fresheners come equipped with a number of fragrance or scent
options for you to enjoy a variety of aromas that you like. Another important thing that
air freshener does is the fact that it neutralizes. Some fresheners simply mask the smell of
malicious odors instead of neutralizing them; however, natural air fresheners eliminate
fresh, clean smell completely void of ghastly whiffs and scrunching noses. In addition it
is also proven that the usage of natural air fresheners promotes a positive change in
mood. There are situations when we are in a tremendous “off” mood, but if suddenly if
you get a fresh smell of lemon or natural flower, it will instantly change your mood and
you can easily get in to moon on with salinity and peace in mind. You can easily
fresheners are indeed very well associated with the well-being of human beings with a
On the study conducted by Jackson (n.d), he proved that natural air fresheners are
also responsible in killing airborne pathogens which are the microorganisms and airborne
pathogens which are present in the environment that sometimes creates unhealthy
atmosphere. According to him, if you can use the air fresheners with natural essential oil
extracts, the airborne pathogens which are harmful for your body will be eradicated with
the natural air fresheners. Even in our vehicles and bathrooms we can use these air
evidence that pleasant fragrances that a natural air fresheners have can improve our mood
and sense of well-being. She also states that recent studies have shown that our
expectations about an odour, rather than any direct effects of exposure to it, may
sometimes be responsible for the mood and health benefits reported. In her experiment,
she found that just telling subjects that a pleasant or unpleasant odour was being
administered, which they might not be able to smell, altered their self-reports of mood
and well being. The mere mention of a positive odour reduced reports of symptoms
related to poor health and increased reports of positive mood. More reliable results have
been obtained, however, from experiments using placebos (odourless sprays). These
studies have demonstrated that although subjects do respond to some extent to odourless
placebos which they think are fragrances, the effect of the real thing is significantly
greater. The thought of pleasant fragrances may be enough to make us a bit more
cheerful, but the actual smell can have dramatic effects in improving our mood and sense
of well-being.
3. Which is more effective to use the liquid type or the gel type of natural air
freshener?
According to Pintubosi (2017), air freshener is a household product that can release the
chemicals they contain into the air and inhaled by consumers which are intended to
dampen smells bad inside the room so as to cause the room feels comfortable. Forms of
freshener on the market there are several types, among others, the solid (used for cabinets
and toilets), liquid, spray and gel. Fragrances, gel is usually laid out by hanging or placed
Solvents there are two types of water and oil. Fragrances that use water-based materials
are made in the form of a gel. Shaped air freshener scent gels have a relatively short
stability, yet easy teruarai making it safe for the environment. Moreover, the air freshener
In addition in the study of Sayce et al. (1976), they determine the ability of
carrageenan to be formulated as a air freshener gelling agent with fragrance of lemon oil
and binder of patchouli oil. Gel formulation in the study was made from a mixture of
carrageenan and sodium benzoate in distilled water at a temperature of 75oC and then
added patchouli and citrus essential oil with a variety of different concentrations of 1%,

that the best gel formula is the formula A3 with a carrageenan concentration of 3%.

Annandale et al. (2013), defined liquid air fresheners as the tools which are
Many liquid air fresheners are commercially available in different formats such as reed or
wick diffusers, electrical plug-in devices, aerosols, or sprays. The perfume composition
of the air freshener may be a fragrance concentrate, a true solution, or a colloidal solution
such as a micro emulsion. However, conventional liquid air fresheners often suffer from
certain disadvantages and limitations. For example, air freshener performance may be
longevity, esthetical appearance, or temperature product stability over time. Certain air
fresheners include high levels of volatile organic compound (VOC) solvents, which are
disfavored due to environmental and safety concern, and may raise regulatory concerns.
fragrance that can be employed due to fragrance solubility or solubilization issues. For
example, perfumed liquid air fresheners containing high level of water often require large
amounts of solubilizers, such as surfactants, in order to achieve the desired clarity and
stability of the final products. Such products may contain excess amounts of solubilizers
with respect to the perfume; sometimes the weight ratio of surfactant to perfume is at
least 1.5:1 or even higher, which may have unsatisfactory impact on fragrance
performance over time, such as fragrance release and fragrance perception (intensity,
character, and the like). The use of high levels of solubilizers can lead to unacceptable
product performance, such as limited performance over time due to suppressed or poor
fragrance release through delivery device such as wicks or reeds as a result of the
solubilizer clogging the capillary channels in the diffuser. Similarly, high levels of
solubilizers can result in clogging of the actuator in nozzle sprays. Therefore, they
conclude that there is a need for improved air freshener formulations to address these and
other problems.
