Let the lumen output of desired lamp to be used in the
room be Ø. In order to get required Illumination (E) over
Lighting calculation Method task Area (A), say “N” lamps are required. Then total
Required Parameters: lumen output will be N*Ø
A=Area to be illuminated However this amount of lumen output is not fully used
due to utilization factor and maintenance factor. So,
E= Illumination Required total lumen output would be N*Ø*µu*µm where µu are
Ø= Lumen output the utilization factor and µm maintenance factor
respectively. According to definition of illumination, this
µu= Utilization Factor must be equal to the product E*A

1. A shop measuring 15m*35m is illuminated by 20 lamps of 500W, the luminious efficiency of each lamp is
15 lm/watt, allowing maintenance factor 0.7 utilization factor 0.5, Determine the illumination on the
working plane.

Given: Area(A)=15m*35m=525m2
Number of Lamps(N)=20
maintenance factor(µm) =0.7
utilization factor(µu) =0.5
Lumen Output (Ø)=500*15=7500 lm

Considering in lamp spacing:

• Equal spacing in at least one direction
• Space height should not exceed 1.5
• Distance of lamp from the wall to be ½ of the distance between the
adjacent lamps

d1=1/2*d
Numerical: Lighting
2. The illumination of the drawing office 30m*10m is to have a value of 250lux is to be provided by a number
of 300W filament lamps. If the utilization factor is 0.4 and the maintenance factor is 0.9, determine the
number of lamps required the efficiency of each lamp is 14 lumens per watt.
Given: Area(A)=30m*10m=300m2
Illumination (E)=250 lm/m2
Lumen Output (Ø)=14*300=4200 lm
maintenance factor(µm) =0.9
utilization factor(µu) =0.4

3. A 30m*15m hall with a ceiling height of 5m is to be provided with a general illumination of 125 lux. Taking a
coefficient of utilization 0.6 and depreciation factor 1.25, Determine number of florescent tube required, their
spacing and mounting height. Take the lamp efficiency of fluorescent lamp as 60 lumens/watts for 40 W tube.

Also,Space Height Ratio=3m/3.7m
So, Spacing x=y=3m =0.81<1.5
Assuming, Lamp is suspended 0.3m from the ceiling
Working Table height =1m
