Chapter – 7 : GSM and TDMA Technology

Problem – 7.2

(a) Consider the multiframe transmission in GSM shown in figure 7.14. Use the
overall structure of the multiframe, frame and slot to show that the transmission
rate of the GSM is indeed 270.833 kbps.
(b) In each GSM multiframe 24 frames are used for traffic and two for associated
control signalling. Considering the detailed burst frame and multiframe
infrastructure, show that the effective transmission rate for each GSM voice
traffic is 22.8 kbps.
(c) The slow associated control channel (SACCH) uses 114 bits of one slot of each
26-slot traffic multiframe. What is the transmission rate for this channel in bits
per second ?

Solution :

Frame hierarchy in GSM is shown in figure 1 (given below)

2048 superframe : Hyperframe (3 hr 28 min 53.76 sec)

51 traffic or 26 control multiframes : Superframe ( 6.12 sec)

26 traffic frames : Multiframe (120 ms) 51 control frames : Multiframe (235.4 ms)

8 – slots : Frame (4.614 ms)

156.25 bits : Burst (0.577 ms)

( Figure 1 : Frame Hierarchy in GSM )

(a)

From figure (1), each slot or burst transmit 156.25 per 0.577 ms . These eight bursts
or slots form one frame ( 4.614 ms) and from this frame structure, 26 traffic frames or 51
control frames form a single multiframe. For a multiframe of 26 traffic frames, time is 120
ms while a multiframe of 51 control frames of 235.4 ms.

Therefore, we find transmission rate for this GSM architecture is :

Transmission Rate = (1/0.577 ms) * 156.25 bits

= 270.798 kbps.

Which is equivalent to 270.8 kbps.

(b)

Now it is observed from figure -1 that, each 120 ms multiframe is composed of 26

traffic frames, each containing eight time slots, and each slot with 156.25 bits in 0.577 ms.

In each multiframe, 24 frames carry user information and remaining two frames carry
system control information related to individual users.

The data rate per voice user is calculated by considering that for each 120 ms , 24
voice bursts each carrying, 2 * 57 = 114 bits of information are transmitted.

Therefore, data rate per user is :

= (24 * 114) / 0.120

= 22,800 bits / second

= 22.8 kbps

Hence, the effective transmission rate for each GSM voice traffic is 22.8 kbps.

(c)

The Slow Associated Control Channel (SACCH) uses 114 bits of one slot of 26 slot
traffic multiframe, so transmission rate for this channel in bits per second can be given as:

= 114 / (0.120 ms) (Because a multiframe of 26 traffic frame comprises of 120 ms)

= 950 bits per second

= 0.95 kbps

Which is equivalent to 1 kbps and that is the half of transmission rate for Stand-alone
dedicated control channel (SDCCH) of gross rate of 2 kbps.
