Communication: The Ingredient of Success

Communication is the exchange (sending and receiving) of intelligence, information or


emotions by two or more persons by writing, verbal or non-verbal means (Lorenzana, Carlos C.
(1993), Management Theory and Practice. Rex Bookstore).
Having a good communication is a key to success in life, work and relationships. Without
effective communication, a message can turn into mistake, problem, and chaos that would lead to
greater misunderstandings. Communication will become successful if and only if both the sender
and the receiver of the message understand the same information. I believe that in giving reply or
feedback is also a part of having a good communication.
In life may it be a personal or intimate relationship with our family or friends, good
communication is very essential to build and strengthen relationships. Poor communication can
destroy and weaken relationships. It is important to hear things out first and weighing it out
before reacting. Delivering a message or conversation in a right manner must also be observed.
Many relationships ended because of the problem of communication. That is why, both parties
must be guided to on how to develop good communication skills since this is a two-way process.
In an organization, communication is integrated in almost everything a manager has to
do. To gain acceptance of the organization’s and his/her policies, to win the cooperation of the
employees, to get ideas and instructions clearly understood and to bring about necessary changes
in performance, he/she has to learn the art of an effective communication.
Improving communication in organizations is very important. Maintaining a strong,
decisive and directional managerial style, observing an open, trusting, and honest communicative
managerial style, fostering a close contact with employers and employees are some of the ways
on how good communication is maintained. Consulting the employers and employees and
seeking their opinions before implementing the changes or seeking form them ideas on how to
resolve a situation or address a change is also important. The need to properly explain them the
reason of everything or the true nature of every information to be shared must be properly done
also.
Communication is really an important ingredient of success. Poor communication may
result to failure and is somewhat demotivating to the employees thereby you were not able to get
them to the path, goal, or objective that the organization would like to lead. But if properly
communicated, then all their efforts and talents will surely be put in achieving what the
organization wants. Making the employees as responsible as a manager is responsible in every
activities will make them feel as part of whatever result the work may achieve in the end.

Communication as an open process, are open to various interpretations based on context


and the culture of the receiver; there might be various meanings to a single statement that is
communicated. Imagine if an employee doesn’t understand a certain message relayed to him/her,
then he/she will have the doubt or difficulty in doing the tasked. A message also is open to many
interpretations in the receiver’s side. That is why the sender must make sure that what he/she is
trying to communicate is the same with how it was interpreted by the receiver of the message.

There are many suggestions for effective communication. The message must be clear. It
must be straightforward and as logically stated as possible. Adopt the KISS formula (Keep it
simple, stupid). The language must be simple and direct to the point. The message must be
complete. It must provide all the needed information, no more or less. Failure to impart complete
information to perform a work can be devastating and frustrating at the same time. Having too
little and or too much information must be avoided. The message must be concise, concrete, and
correct. I believe that whatever challenges and problems in life that we are facing may it be in
work or relationships can be solved with a good communication. Listening all sides and
understanding the situation then thinking of the possible way to solve are the things that
communication can do in all aspects.
