PHYSICAL EDUCATION
REFLECTION

Our first lesson is all about Arnis, its historical background and its law as a national sport. Also,
the teachings of Cardinal rules or principles in developing their own lives and the facilities and equipment’s
in Arnis. Since our subject is in an asynchronous learning, we are asked to read, understand, and familiarize
all the information’s about the lesson. And create a reflection regarding the things that we have learned
while reading and learning it.

To be honest, I already studied Arnis when I was in first year high school but as I read the lesson,
I realized that there are still many things and information’s that I still do not know specially about it is
historical background. The knowledge that I gained is that Arnis, is used to be called Kali which is used by
Pre-Spanish Filipinos for self defense, experts in fighting with their hands, either bare, stick or blade. That
Arnis has three forms of play, which are the Espada y Daga, Solo Baston, and Sinawali. I thought that Arnis
is just the same with martial arts, but it is quite different, because Arnis now emphasizes the use of stick
and hand–arm movement. I also learned that in playing arnis there are also training methods, like other
sports which are muestrasion, or pandalag, sangga at patama, or sombra tabak and larga muton, or
labanang totohanan, which can help the body to build up strength and endurance, improve skill levels and
build motivation, ambition and confidence. The information that I also gained is the decline of the term
Kali and the emergence of the word Arnis, though a long time ago Kali was known as a standard fighting
technique of Filipinos when they reverted against Spain using itak or bolo. That Kali declined popularity
when the Spanish authorities discouraged and eventually banned the practice of art then from the word
arnes came the present Arnis, and that in 1853 the word kali was completely replaced by Arnis. Besides
of changing the word the weapon used had relied considerably on the use of cane as a self defense
weapon because Arnis is engaged as a sport. Furthermore, modern arnis is introduced by the Father of
Modern Arnis Remy Amador Presas. Then the declaring of Arnis as the National Martial Art and Sport of
the Philippines which is the Republic Act No. 9850. I also learned that Arnis has its own principles that
have to be inculcated in the student which are divided into two categories: physical and psychological.
And that Respect is the cardinal principle of Arnis, and I think in all sports, respect is really the most
important thing that a student or player should have in the reason that respect means that you accept
somebody for who they are, even when they're different from you or you don't agree with them or even
though s/he is your opponent. As well as principles in Arnis that a student must remembered because it
is always not about having trophies or winning but it is all about who you are as a person or player, like
character, because in sports what matters is having a good character or moral values such as admirable
traits as honesty, responsibility, etc. Next is Sincerity because it helps to create trust. people that are
perceived as being sincere in their manner and words generally have a better time getting others to trust
and be friends with them, Discipline which is an essential foundation for any sport. It builds an athlete's
character to help them set their mind to achieve great things. Self-Control, it is also an important skill in
sports that allows to regulate behavior in order to achieve long-term goals, like the player or the student
must control his/her temper if s/he hopes to achieve it. Etiquette, sport also has unwritten rules or
customs or etiquette to uphold respect and fairness. Student’s loyalty is the foundational quality that gets
teams through tough times and is the component that drives teams toward great achievements. I believe
that if a team is loyal to one another and is loyal to the teacher or coach can maintain focus through critical
times and has a common bond like no other and that no one person or team will ever be successful
without loyalty. Sports equipment and practice facilities are used in order to prepare teams for a season
or throughout a game week in order to prepare for particular opponents. The equipment and facilities
used in this manner are extremely important to a team’s performance. So the knowledge that I also gained
is the facilities and equipments used in this sport, like the right dimensions, lines of the playing area,
boundary of lines, and then match lines, in equipments they are the cane, wooden replica of a bladed
weapon, the foam stick, headgear, and the body protector.

In studying this lesson, it helped me more understand what Arnis is, it gave me positive
encouragement and respect for values in martial arts. Knowing more about Arnis it can be useful for mw
in many ways like, it can be used as self-defense, it can help me to ensure my safety especially I am a girl.
I can use my stick as a weapon If someone wants to harm me so that I can protect myself. It provides a
full body workout, it will help me to improve my stamina, muscle tone, flexibility, balance and strength
and will give me a healthy lifestyle. It helps you to improve your physical fitness, mental and emotional
health. Lastly, Arnis can also teach me discipline, control and be focused on my goals because of its
principles.
