Course Outcomes: Through this course students should be able to

CO1 :: understand the operational contrast in vertical and directional well drilling.

CO2 :: visualize the concepts to be used while designing a directional well.

CO3 :: understand the approach of LWD and MWD while drilling through a directional well.

CO4 :: assess and mitigate hole problems that occurs while deviating the drilling string

CO5 :: enumerate well killing methods to have control over a kick and blowout.

CO6 :: formulate a well plan to drill a horizontal target

Unit I
Well planning and design : concept of play, lead and prospect, drilling programme preparation, geo
technical order, casing policy and design using – pore pressure, fracture gradient prediction, casing
seat / depth selection, casing design criteria, burst, tension, collapse, bi-axial loading
Unit II
Straight and directional hole drilling : well profiles, bottom hole assembly and its components,
deflection tools, deviation control, hole problems, well path deflection & correction
Unit III
Logging while drilling and Measurement while drilling : downhole surveying, objectives of
LWD/MWD, LWD and MWD tools, telemetry system, data interpretation
Unit IV
Directional drilling and horizontal well drilling : directional drilling technology, PD motors and
turbodrills, auto-track and verti-track system, rotary steerable system, geo-steering tools, special
mud requirements, drilling problems and remedies
Unit V
Special methods in directional drilling : extended reach drilling, multilateral drilling, coil tubing
drilling, hole cleaning in high angled wells
Unit VI
Well control principles & procedures : anatomy of a kick, kick tolerance, dynamic kick control,
bullheading, drillers method, engineers method
