Jharkhand’ Jharia is the most polluted Indian city & Lunglei, Mizoram least polluted: Greenpeace India report
2018
The Greenpeace India report for 2018 was released based on the National Ambient Air Quality Monitoring
Programme (NAMP), on January 21, 2020. Jharia in Jharkhand which is known for Coal-belching is the most
polluted Indian city with 322 µg/m3 (micrograms per cubic meter) of PM10 (Particulate matter) pollutants in 2018,
according to the report analysis of 287 cities across the country. Out of 287 cities 231 cities were severely polluted.
SRS Bulletin released: National infant mortality rate at 32, MP worst performer; Kerala achieved SDG target
On May 10, 2020, Registrar General of India has released its Sample Registration System (SRS) bulletin based on data
collected for 2018 (reference year) which has presented the estimates of Birth Rate, Death Rate, and Infant Mortality
Rate (IMR) for the year 2018 for India and its States/UTs.
The rates are calculated per one thousand of the population.
The current sample is based on the 2011 Census frame. The SRS sample is replaced every ten years based on the
latest census frame.
Let us go through the SRS Bulletin starting with IMR:
Infant Mortality Rate (IMR): It is the number of deaths per 1,000 live births of children under one year of age.
National Average: India’s infant mortality rate (IMR) has improved very marginally from 33 per 1,000 live births in
2017 to 32 in 2018. In 2009-2018 it has declined from 50 to 32. The present figure of 32 is about one-fourth as
compared to 1971 (129).
Urban & Rural Areas: The decline in rural areas in 2009-2018 is 55 to 36, and for urban areas it is from 34 to 23.
With regard to percentage, there is a decline of about 35% in rural areas and about 32% in urban areas.

Green-Ag project launched in Mizoram to bring transformative change in the farm sector
On July 29,2020 Green-Agriculture(Green-Ag),a project funded by Global Environment Facility (GEF) was launched
in Mizoram,India.It was launched by Agriculture minister of Mizoram C Lalrinsanga.
Mizoram is first among the 5 states where the project is to be implemented. The other states are Madhya Pradesh,
Odisha, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand.
Objective of Green-Ag:-
• Green-Ag projects aims at accelerating the transformation of Indian agriculture sector into national and
international benefits by Greenland management practices, concerns of biodiversity and climate change.
• To mainstream the conservation of critical biodiversity and forest landscapes by transforming agricultural
practices of one state.
• The project is believed to reduce the 49 million carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2eq) through sustainable land
use and agricultural practices.
Goals: –
To achieve national and Global environmental benefits without compromising food security and farmers income
• India’s ability to strengthen rural livelihoods
• To meet the requirements of its food and nutrition security
• Community led initiatives to support conservation of globally important species such as tigers, elephants and
Great Indian Bustard.
Implementation of Project in Mizoram:-
i.Sustainable agriculture was the main component of the project and given the unique advantage of Mizoram in terms
of agro-climatic conditions, water availability and a hard-working population
ii.The project covers land in two districts of Lunglei and Mamit, Mizoram including Dampa Tiger Reserve and
Thorangtlang Wildlife Sanctuary.
Other virtual participants:-
United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) Tomio Shichiri and Dr. Alka Bhargava, additional Secretary
in Department of Agriculture, Cooperation and Farmer’s Welfare (DAC & FW) gave their virtual addresses while
launching the project.
Dr Thomas Hofer, senior forestry officer, RAP, lead technical officer (LTO), Green-Ag Project, FAO RAP also virtually
addressed the event from Bangkok.
Key Executive Agencies:
• Global Environment Facility is the funding agency.
• Ministry of Agriculture & Farmer’s Welfare (MoA&FW) is the national level executing agency and Food and
Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations being the designated agency of GEF to implement.
Harsimrat Kaur Badal E-Inagurates First Operationalized Mega Food Park of Mizoram: Zoram Mega
Food Park
On 20th July 2020, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Union Minister of Food Processing Industries(MoFPI) e-inaugurated
the first operationalized mega food park of Mizoram, Zoram Mega Food Park, in Khamrang Village in Kolasib
District, Mizoram, promoted by M/s Zoram Mega Food Park Pvt. Ltd, which will provide directly benefit over
25,000 farmers and will provide employment opportunities to over 5,000 people in the region.

Rameswar Teli, Minister of State for Food Processing Industries and Dr Jitendra Singh, Minister of State for
Development of North Eastern Region with Lanunmawia Chuaungo, Chief Secretary of Mizoram, Dr. R. Lalthangliana,
Mizoram Minister of Commerce and Industries and C. Lalrosanga (Member of Parliament, Mizoram) were present
during the virtual inauguration.
Zoram Mega Food Park:
The Zoram Mega Food Park project has been set up in a 55 acre of land at a cost of Rs.75.20 crore.
Facilities:
i.Besides the state of art enabling infrastructure The facility consist has,
• Cold storage of capacity 1000 MT
• Drywarehouse of 3000MT
• Aseptic pulp line with canning, aseptic and tetra packing of 2MT per hour
• Ripening chambers of 40 MT per hour
• Spices Drying facility of 2 MT per hour
• Food Testing Laboratory.
ii.The park also has an administrative building for office and other purposes and 3 Primary processing centres at
Champhai Thingfal and Thenzawl.
Benefits:
i.The park will leverage an additional investment of Rs. 250 Crore in about 30 food processing units and will lead to a
turnover of Rs.450-500 crores annually.
ii.The modern infrastructure for food processing will benefit the around 25,000 farmers in the Core Processing
Centre(CPC) and PrimaryProcessing Centre(PPC), processors and consumers of Mizoram.
iii.The park has primary processing and storage facilities of the parks near the farms in the catchment area to benefit
the farmers.
Additional projects:
i.Around 88 projects supported by the ministry of food processing Industries are sanctioned in the Northeast region
and 41 projects have been implemented
ii.On completion the 88 projects will create a processing and preservation capacity of 8.66 Lakh Metric Ton(MT) to
handle agricultural produce worth Rs.2166 crores.
iii.Projects worth Rs.1000 crores have been sanctioned with subsidy support of over Rs.520 crores.

Gujarat, Andaman & Nicobar Emerge as Best State/UT in providing Strong Ecosystem for Startups: DPIIT
ranking
On September 11, 2020 Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) released the 2nd Edition
of ‘States on Support to Startup Ecosystems 2019’ . The Rankings are based on providing a Strong Ecosystem for
promoting Startups.
i.Gujarat emerged as the best performer among Category X.Gujarat topped the rankings in the 2018 edition of
Ranking also.
(In Category x – All States and New Delhi, barring North Eastern (N. E) States & other Union Territories (U. T))
ii.Andaman and Nicobar Islands emerged as best performer among Category Y
(Category y – All N.E states except Assam and all UTs except Delhi).
iii. The Rankings were released by Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal and a total of 22
states and 3 UTs participated in the exercise.
Rankings:
For the purposes of ranking, states/UTs are classified into five categories: Best Performers (100 Percentile), Top
Performers (More than 75 to Less than 100), Leaders (More than or equal to 30 to less than or equal to 75), Aspiring
Leaders (More than 10 and less than 30) and Emerging Startup Ecosystems (Less than or equal to 10).
