CABLE SIZING CALCULATION

1. L.V.CABLES
1.1 General
The low voltage cable system installed in the building shall be designed to support load
for the building

1.2 LV Power and Multi-core Cables

Power cables used for the connection between LV panels and consumers such as motors, sub-
distribution boards, local control cubicles and all other users directly fed from the switchgear
shall be sized according to the continuous site rating calculation.

1.2.1 Technical Data

♦ Rated voltage : 0.6/1 kV

♦ Conductor material : Copper
♦ Core insulation : Thermosetting (XLPE) or PVC
♦ Protective Armour : Galvanized steel wire
♦ Protective sheath : LSOH or PVC over sheath

1.2.2 General Design Requirement

The low voltage power and multi core cables shall comply with KM regulations, QCS
specification and the following standards:

♦ BS 6346: Specification for 600/1000 V and 1900/3300 V Armoured Electric cables having
PVC insulation
♦ BS 6004: Specification for PVC insulated cables – Non armoured for Electric power and
lighting
♦ BS 5467: Specification for 600/1000 V and 1900/3000 V Armoured Electric cables having
thermosetting insulation
♦ BS 6724 - Specification for 600 / 1000 V and 1900 / 3300 V armoured electric cables having
thermosetting insulation and low emission of smoke and corrosive gases when affected by
fire.
1.2.3 LV Power cables:
The conductors for power supply cables at voltages up to 600 / 1000 V shall be plain annealed
copper wire complying with IEC 60228 as applicable, with circular or shaped conductors. All the
cores shall be identified by phase colors.
The conductor sizes shall be in accordance with loading of the individual circuits under the
site conditions and to the approval of Kahramaa.

The basis of voltage drop calculations shall be for worst case, i.e. minimum fault level and
outage of supply feeders of transformers.

The maximum permissible volt drop in cables shall be:

♦2.5% for from customer’s main to point on the installation

♦A derating factor & current ratings of cables shall be based upon Kahramaa regulations /
Table 10 & 11.

♦ Cables shall be sized by consideration of:

- Name plate full load current of equipment
- Current carrying capacity after derating
- Voltage group
- Short circuit rating

1.2.4 Installation Requirements:

The installation requirements shall be as per Kahra-maa regulations/ QCS specification. The
following requirements shall apply:
♦ Low voltage cables, multi-core cables shall each be routed in separate trays

♦ Sufficient space shall be allowed to run in each duct

♦ Openings in walls and floors shall be sealed after the cable installation with a fire proof
barrier.

♦ Only one layer of cables shall be laid on one tray.

1.2.5 Current Ratings:
Recommendations for current ratings:
The Calculated current for distribution boards (DBs) and sub-distribution boards (SDB's)
shall be sized on Demand load current (+30% assumed future additional loads) as per Kahra-
maa regulation, section 604 under “Voltage drop”.
Cable size calculations have been carried out based on Kahra-maa's schedule indicated in
their rules and regulations, in which the following factors have been already considered in
determining the maximum current capacity of cables to be used in Qatar.
i. Cables laid in ground (direct on in pipe), depth of lay is 600 mm.
ii. Ground temperature is 35°C.
iii. Where cables are installed above ground level and not exposed to the outside ambient
condition, air temperature is taken as 45°C. Or 50°C If exposed to outside ambient
condition.

For groups of cables covered under Tables 9, 10, 11 of KM regulations, cable rating shall apply
since cables are run in horizontal plane and clearance between cables shall be 25 mm. The
current rating for the cables are calculated based on the following installation
conditions.
• Ambient air temperature = 45°C.
• Ground temperature = 35°C.
• Buried depth = 0 . 6 m
• Cables are spaced such that space between adjacent cables shall not be less than the radius
of the bigger cable as per QCS 2014 specification, Section 21, Part 09, Note 9.3.1.

Current ratings for single and multi-core cables

The following factors have been used in determining the maximum current carrying capacity
of cables to be used within the State of Qatar with copper conductors and manufactured to
comply with:

BS 6346 : 1997 (Specification For 600 /1000 V And 1900 / 3300 V Armored
Electric Cables Having PVC Insulation).
BS 6004 : 1995 (Specification for PVC - Insulated Cables (Non – Armored) For
Electric Power and Lighting).
BS 5467 : 1997 (Specification For 600 /1000 V And 1900 / 3300 V Armored
Electric Cables Having Thermosetting || Insulation).

1. Where cables are laid in the ground (in pipes of direct) depth of lay is 600 mm.
2. Ground temperature 35°C.
3. Thermal resistivity of ground 3°C m / w.
4. Where cables are installed above ground level and not exposed to the outside ambient
conditions, air temperature taken as 45°-50°C.
5. Where cables are installed above ground level and exposed to the outside ambient
conditions, air temperature taken as 50°C.
6. All current ratings apply only where the cables have closed excess || current protection.
7. The current ratings for cables having aluminum conductors have not been included in
these tables, aluminum conductors shall not be used.
8. Cables not manufactured to the above British Standards are not included in these tables
and therefore, the current ratings will not apply.
