PLAAFP
PLAAFP stands for Present Levels of Academic Achievement and Functional Performance.
It is the foundation of the IEP as it describes the child’s strengths in relation to state
standards (TEKS), contributes to other IEP components and links them together, and
contains current and relevant information. It specifically provides the basis for IEP
goals/objectives and measuring progress.
The PLAAFP should…
• Identify the needs of the student so that service providers are aware of the level at which the
student is functioning and allow the team to set appropriate and meaningful annual goals for the
student.
• Make the needs that will be written as goals priority.
• Provide a baseline data for each need.
PLAAFPs include…
• Student’s strengths, interests, and preferences.
• Parent concerns regarding their child’s education.
• Special considerations include behavior, communication, limited English proficiency, health,
braille, assistive technology.
• Transition assessments
• Other essential information
• Effect of the disability
• Post-secondary expectations for living, learning, and working
• Course of study
