Digital Assignment-2

Fall Semester 2020-2021

1. Calcium carbonate slurry (CaCO3 uniform particles suspended in water) having a
concentration of 450 kg of solids per cubic meter of slurry is settling in a gravitational
settling tank. The density of the particles is 2400 kg/m3 and terminal velocity of single
particle is 18 cm/s. Calculate the hindered settling velocity of the suspension. Assume
Richardson-Zaki hindered settling index as 4.3.
2. Two identically sized spherical particles A and B having densities ρA and ρB
respectively are settling in a fluid of density ρ. Assuming free settling under laminar
and turbulent flow conditions, derive an expression for the ratio of terminal settling
velocities of particle A to that of particle B under laminar and turbulent flow
conditions.
3. A slurry consists of 2% by weight of solids (specific gravity = 2.5) is to be clarified
by continuous sedimentation. Feed to the clarifier is 5000 m3/day. The underflow
contains 10% solids. Design the diameter and height of a thickener. The batch
sedimentation data is as follows:

t (min) 0 5 12 24 40 70 250 infinity

H (cm) 40 25 15 8 5 3 1.8 1.7

4. A binary mixture of 100 µm size having densities of 2 g/cm3 and 4 g/cm3 is to be

classified by settling technique using water. Estimate the range of velocities that can
do the job better and recommend a suitable value. Assume viscosity of water at room
temperature as 0.001N-S/m2.
5. Consider a solid spherical particle is flowing in a liquid. List out various forces acting
on the particle and develop a possible expression for the maximum size of the particle
to have terminal velocities in the Stoke’s law region.
6. The diameter of a drop of liquid fuel changes with time due to combustion according
to relationship . While burning, the drop falls at its terminal velocity

under stokes flow regime. Derive an expression for the distance travelled by the drop.
7. A mixture of coal and sand particles having sizes smaller than 0.0001 m in diameter is
to be separated by screening and subsequent elutriation with water. Recommend a
screen aperture such that the oversize from the screen can be separated completely
into sand and coal particles. Calculate also the required water velocity. Assume that
stokes law is applicable and consider Reynold’s number as 0.1. Density of sand =
2650 kg/m3; density of coal = 1350 kg/m3; density of water = 1000 kg/m3; viscosity of
water = 0.001 kg/m.s.
8. In a mixture of quartz (specific gravity = 2.65) and galena (specific gravity = 7.5), the
size of the particles range from 0.0002 cm to 0.001 cm. On separation in a hydraulic
classifier using water under free settling conditions, estimate the size ranges of quartz
and galena in the pure product.

Data: Viscosity of water = 0.001 kg/m.s

Density of water = 1000 kg/m3
