QUARTER 1: EARTH SCIENCE WEEK: 5-6
MELC: Explain the different processes that occur along plate boundaries.
WEEK 5
ACTIVITY # 1A: Converging between Continental and Oceanic Plates
OBJECTIVES :
Explain the processes that occur along convergent boundaries.
Determine the consequences of colliding plates.
PROCEDURE:
1. Study Figure 1 showing the cross-sectional diagram of converging continental and
oceanic plates, and
2. Answer the following questions below.
GUIDE QUESTIONS:
1. What happens to oceanic plate (Plate A) as it collides with continental plate (Plate
B)?
2. What do you think may happen to the leading edge of oceanic plate (Plate A) as it
continues to move downward? Why?
3. What do you call the molten materials that ooze out at the edges between two plates?
4. What is formed on top of the continental plate (Plate B)?
5. What other geologic event could take place as the plates continue to grind against
each other?
OBJECTIVES :
PROCEDURE :
GUIDE QUESTIONS:
1. What are the geologic processes/events that will occur at the plate boundaries due to
the plate movement?
2. What geologic features might form at the surface of the plate A?
3. If the edge of Plate A suddenly flicks upward, there is a large amount of water may be
displaced. What could be formed at the surface of the ocean?
OBJECTIVES:
Explain the processes that occur along convergent boundaries.
Determine the consequences of colliding plates.
MATERIAL:
bond paper
PROCEDURE:
1. Put a piece of paper on top of the table.
2. Place your hands on both ends of the paper. Then, bring your hands closer to each other.
GUIDE QUESTIONS:
1. What happen to the paper as they were pushed from both ends?
2. If the paper represents the earth’s lithosphere, what do you think is formed in the lithosphere?
3. What other geologic event/feature could take place with this type of plate movement?
4. How will you differentiate this type of convergent plate boundary with the other two in terms of
the consequences of the earth’s lithosphere?
GENERALIZATION:
