Do Now:
Pinnipeds are marine mammals that have similar integumentary systems as humans (mammals). Based
on the information given to you on lanugo. Why do you think baby seals require this? What does it do
for them?

I think they require this so that they can be kept warm.

Integumentary System: Appendages Lesson
Compare/Contrast the following: Based on appearance (and minor research), identify the differences
in each of the following functions of skin appendages.

  Humans  chicken

Protection  Chemical : skin secretes natural antibiotics.  A barrier between the external environment
kills bacteria  and the internal systems and organs, thus
provides support and protection from
infection by microorganisms and from
physical injury.

Body Temperature  Temp regulation in the hypodermis  Thermal insulation to help regulate body
Regulation  temperature in a variable environment

The feathers maintain heat.(plumules)

Blood Storage  Holds up to 5% of the blood volume t a  The dermis is also quite well supplied with
time  blood vessels that do not reach into the
epidermis

Synthesis of Vitamin  Allows the body to absorb calcium  Nutrients, respiratory gases, hormones and
D  other compounds pass by diffusion into the
live inner cells of the epidermis

Excretion  Waste is eliminated through sweat, urine, or  Waste is eliminated through poop.
hair growth

Sensations and  Hair follicle receptors: allow us to feel when  Bristles(another type of feather) are found
Sensory Receptors  the wind blows on our hair  around the mouth and eyes of chickens and
are thought to be primarily used to aid the
sensory ability of birds and protect sensitive
areas

Exit Ticket:
In 2 sentences, i dentify 2 key differences between a human and your favorite animal → specific to
integumentary system appendages.

The big difference between the human and chicken/birds is the feathers that they have and that we
don't. They work alot like the hair but it's really not. They have 5 different types of feathers with
different purposes.. Another key difference between humans and chicken is that chickens don't have
sweat glands and they get rid of waste simply through pooping.
