Negative Moment
Positive Moment
As the bending moment varies with the square of the effective span,
it is important to fix the effective span correctly. Clause 22.2 of IS
456 suggests the following:
1. For slabs that are not built integrally with their supports,
Effective span, L = (Clear span, Lc + effective depth of slab,
d) or c/c of supports, whichever is less (where Lc is the clear
span, and c/c is the centre-to-centre distance)
Effective Span
8
As the bending moment varies with the square of the effective span,
it is important to fix the effective span correctly. Clause 22.2 of IS
456 suggests the following:
• For continuous slabs cast monolithically with supporting beams
(see Fig. 9.3a):
(a) If maximum width of support bw ≤ Lc/12,
L = Lc + d or c/c of supports, whichever is less
(b) If maximum width of support bw > Lc /12 or 600 mm,
whichever is less:
(i) For end span with one end fixed and the other continuous or for intermediate
spans,
L = Lc
(ii) For end span with one end free and the other continuous,
L = Lc + d/2 or Lc + Half width of discontinuous support, whichever is less
