II. List of Filipino Botanist and their Contributions

Filipino Contribution/Discoveries Date
Scientist/Botanist contribution
/discoveries
was/were
made
Dioscoro L. Umali, o An awardee of National Scientist of the Philippines 1978
Ph.D. o Father of Philippine Plant Breeding
o Due to his research studies on upland agriculture,
forestry and environment conservation it helped the
farmers to improve the quality of their crops
Pedro B. Escuro, Ph.D. o A recipient of the University of the 1979
PhilippinesDistinguished Professional award in
agriculture (1973), and D.Sc. (honoris causa
1974) and the 1974 Ayala award in agricultural
science.
o He made significant contributions to rice
breeding, a plant breeder, professor, extension
worker, and consultant in agricultural project
Eduardo A. o A pioneer in the study of Philippine Medicinal 1979
Quisumbing, Ph.D. plants which he made such a great contribution to
the study of botany
Magdalena C. Cantoria, o Her researches dealt particularly on the 1980
Ph.D. morphology, physiology and biochemistry of
drug plants.
o She has done basic studies on the
pharmacognosy of agar, rauwolfia, datura, mint
and Piper species.
Emerita V. de Guzman, o The series of her work on the growth and 1980
Ph.D development in vitro of the makapuno coconut
embryo. As a result of this effort, she has
revolutionized the old ratio of the makapuno-
bearing nuts in the tropics which produce only
3-5 makapuno nuts in every receme bearing 14-
19 nuts. Dr. de Guzman produced 100% all
makapuno-bearing in the raceme.
Emil Q. Javier, Ph.D. o Under the President’s proclamation no.781 on 1982
august 2, 2019 bestowing to National Scientist the
highest honor for man and women of science in
country because of his leadership at the Institute of
Plant Breeding (IPB) advanced the production of
high yielding crops and disease resistant varieties in
the Philippines and in Asia which paved the way to
better nourishment and an improved quality of life
of people.
o His expertise is in agronomy, especially the
production, seed creation and management of
tropical grasses and legumes, and the usage and
grazing administration of indigenous Imperata
grassland
Jose R. Velasco, Ph.D. o He was a Filipino plant physiologist and 1983
agricultural chemist noted for his research on
soil and plant nutrition and on coconut diseases.
In 1998, he was recognized as a National
Scientist of the Philippines.
Filomena F. Campos, o She was acknowledged for her works on cotton 1987
Ph.D. research in the Philippines leading to the
improvement of a collection of technology on
cotton production accomplished in a
comparatively short period of three years
Benito S. Vergara, o He was also behind the development of the Rice 1987
Ph.D. Museum and Learning Center, and is known for
his extensive plant catalogues in rice and
ornamental plant varieties, as well as his work
starting the Farmer's Primer on Growing Rice,
an illustrated manual explaining basic rice
growing concepts
Prescillano M. Zamora, o He was a Filipino biologist who is notable for 1987
Ph.D. his work on plant anatomy-morphology and
pteridophyte biology. He is also well known for
his studies on vascular plants due to which his
followers added additional species to some
plant's genus'.
Ricardo M. Lantican, o He was recognized for his contributions in plant 1988
Ph.D. breeding. His research shows the importance of
genetic diversity as a weapon against
environmental adversities. His work finds
applications in Philippine agriculture
on the science and practice of crop production,
and cytoplasm research.
Ramon C. Barba, Ph.D. o A Filipino inventor and horticulturist best 2014
known for inventing a way to induce more
flowers in mango trees using ethrel and
potassium nitrate.

IV. Essay on “Why we study Plants?”

Plants plays a vital role to us humans and to all living things they serves as our source of raw
materials for industry needs and for our daily needs, they serves as the shelter of all different
species of animals as well us people, it produces the air that we breathe which is the oxygen,
Lastly, it produces chemicals which plays a vital role in the world of medicine it’s like we
humans as well as all the living things in this world depends our life to all the different species of
plants that’s why it is essential for us to study plants due to the fact that it will help us to
conserve them as well as those endangered species of plants, it will help us also to learn more
and understand deeper on the natural world, and lastly to enhance our knowledge on the abilities
of plants to provide more food and chemicals for medicine, and other useful things such as
biofuels.
