Explain THREE barriers that could affect an individual’s access to these facilities in your local
community?
Many technological advances and conveniences that have made our lives easier and less stressful, many
personal variables that affect our plans to become more physically active, including physiological,
behavioural, and psychological factors. Understanding common obstacles to physical activity and
implementing overcoming strategies may help make physical activity part of everyday life. Individuals
experience various personal and environmental obstacles to regular physical activity.
In my local area, barriers that might affect an individual's access is time, motivation and energy. Time
can impact someone’s access to these facilities by having their schedules full and not being able to clear
anything up to give themselves time to do physical activity. By giving themselves time, it lowers their
blood pressure and reduces stress. Studies have shown that outdoor physical activity reduces blood
pressure and heart rate in a person. Outdoor exercises also feel strenuous than equivalent indoor
exercise.
Motivation can impact someone’s access to these facilities by having a lack of faith in their physically
active capacity (low self-efficacy) and the lack of support or companionship from friends and family.
Many of the outdoor facilities around my area, such as parks and trails, are open to everyone. This will
encourage an individual to exercise and spend time with their mates and closest and dearest. In
addition, outdoor fitness is a fantastic opportunity to meet new people while doing their workout.
Energy can also impact an individual’s access to these facilities by boredom of physical activity and non-
enjoyment of it. By using the outdoor facilities, this gives an individual a chance to rotate through
different activities such as walking, cycling etc. They can also explore new options and learn more new
skills by checking out exercises groups held by some people in the field.
In a 2013 study aimed at identifying external and internal obstacles to physical activity and exercising
engagement among middle -aged and elderly people, the most common external obstacles between
middle-aged and elderly respondents were ‘not enough time,’ ‘no one to exercise with’ and ‘lack of
facilities.
There are a lot of benefits when doing physical activity outside. It’s considered as a natural
antidepressant, it challenges your body, it provides mental relief and it can create a team building
experience. In my area, there is a park, a field and a basketball court. People of all ages use these
facilities for walking, running, playing team games etc.
The effectiveness of a field to an individual is very helpful. Working outdoors can boost an individual's
mental health. By doing physical activity, it can minimize anxiety, depression and depressive mood and
by enhancing self-esteem and cognitive performance, physical activity helps improve mental health.
Physical activity has also been shown to relieve symptoms such as low self-esteem and isolation from
society.
The effectiveness of a basketball court to an individual is also helpful. Physical activity can be done by
playing basketball with family and friends, doing drills such as suicides, walking around the basketball
court etc. By doing physical activity on a basketball court, an individual can make new friends and learn
new skills while doing physical activity. It's free of charge meaning it wouldn’t cost anything to workout
on the basketball courts.
