Problem#1
A short post constructed from a hollow circular tube of aluminum supports a compressive load of 26 kips. The
inner and outer diameters of the tube are d1 in. and d2 in., respectively, and its length is 16 in. The shortening
of the post due to the load is measured as 0.012 in.

Determine the compressive stress and strain in the post. (Disregard the weight of the post itself and assume
that the post does not buckle under the load.)

For R<10
d1 = R, d2= R+0.6
For 10<R<30
d1 = R/3, d2 = d1 +0.5
For 30<R<60
d1 = R/6, d2 = d1 +0.8
For 60<R<150
d1 = R/15, d2 = d1 +0.4
For 150<R<300
d1 = R/20, d2 = d1 +0.7
For 300<R<500
d1 = R/40, d2 = d1 +0.9
Problem#2
A circular steel rod of length L and diameter d hangs in a mine shaft and holds an ore bucket of weight W at
its lower end.
(a) Obtain a formula for the maximum stress σmax in the rod, considering the weight of the rod itself. Assume
density of steel as ‘γ’ and Area of steel as ‘A’ for developing weight of rod itself.

(b) Calculate the maximum stress if L m, d 8 mm, and W 1.5 kN and density of steel γ = 77 KN/m3

For R<10
L = Rx5
For 10<R<30
L = Rx2
For 30<R<60

Problem#3
A steel pipe of length L ft, outside diameter d2 6.0 in., and inside diameter d1 4.5 in. is compressed by an
axial force P 140 k .The material has modulus of elasticity E 30,000 ksi and Poisson’s ratio ʋ is 0.30.

Determine the following quantities for the pipe: (a) the shortening δ (b) the lateral strain ὲ (c) the increase
Δd2 in the outer diameter and the increase Δd1 in the inner diameter

support by a pin of diameter d that passes through a hole of the same size in the bar. The allowable tensile
stress on the net cross section of the bar is σT140 MPa, the allowable shear stress in the pin is TS 80 MPa,
and the allowable bearing stress between the pin and the bar is σB 200 MPa.

(a) Determine the pin diameter dm for which the load P will be a maximum.
(b) Determine the corresponding value Pmax of the load

strut CD and carries a load P lb (pounds) at joint B. The strut, which consists of two bars each of thickness

(a) If the allowable shear stress in the bolt is 13,000 psi, what is the minimum required diameter dmin of the
bolt at C?
(b) If the allowable shear stress in the bolt is 19,000 psi, what is the minimum required diameter dmin of the
bolt at C?
