NAGARJUNA SAGAR PROJECT

Preamble:
The multipurpose Nagarjunasagar
Project (NSP) is one of the modern
temples of Independent India. This is the
largest and highest masonry dam in the
world. The Project was inaugurated by
(Late) Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru, the then
Prime Minister of India on the 10th
December 1955.

The water was let into both the two main canals i.e. right main canal (Jawahar
Canal), left main canal (Lalbahadur Canal) by the late Prime Minister Smt. Indira
Gandhi on the 4th August 1967.

Location:
The Project is located on River Krishna, It is about 2.4 Km downstream of the
then Nandikonda Village, Peddavoora Mandal, Nalgonda District.

Scope:
The Project contemplates to provide Irrigation facilities to an extent of 21.43
Lakh under Left Main Canal (Lal Bhadur Canal) and Right Main Canal (Jawahar Canal),
Feeding of tanks in the command area at the time of need. It also provides drinking
water to urban & rural areas along the canal system. It also meets the water demands
of twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. In addition to the above, 960MW Power
Generation set up at Nargarjunasagar Reservoir.

Need for Modernization:

1. Water is not reaching tail end areas and it resulted in gap ayacut of about 4 Lakh
Acres.
2. Masonry dam has leakages in several blocks.
3. Many structures on canals need repairs/replacement.
4. Napa slab lining in left canal is damaged at many places.
5. RR Masonry lining in deep cuts collapsed.
6. Lot of muck has fallen into canals in deep cut reaches.
7. Canal system is unable to carry designed discharge.
8. If No rehabilitation is taken up 1% of ayacut will become gap ayacut every year.
Andhra Pradesh Water Sector Improvement Project(APWSI
To overcome the above issues, the then Government of Andhra Pradesh has
chosen the NagarjunaSagar Scheme (NSS) under APWSIP for complete Rehabilitation
and modernization of NS Project assessed at Rs.4444.41Crores(SSR2007-08) is an
External aided Project and accorded the Administrative Approval for the above cost
vide in G.O. Ms.No.20, Irrigation and CAD (PW.EA) Dept. Dt.2-2-2008.

Date of Project Effectiveness : September 10th , 2010

Project Cost : Rs.4444.41 Cr.
World Bank Loan Portion : Rs.2025.00 Cr.
State Government Share : Rs.2419.41 Cr.
Duration of the Project : 6 years.
Date of Project Closing : July 31st, 2016

The Modernisation works on NagarjunaSagar Project constitutes of 24 Main and

Branch Canals (Main Canal Packages), 78 DC Packages, 672 WUA Packages and Dam
Safety Works.

Projectobjectives:
The proposed project aims to (i) improve irrigation service delivery on a
sustainable basis to increase productivity of irrigated agriculture in the
NagarjunaSagar scheme command, and (ii) strengthen the state’s institutional
capacity for multi-sector planning, development and management of its water
resources.

After Bifurcation of state the Telangana part of APWSIP was renamed as WSIP,TS
There are 13 Packages on Main Canals, 24 DC level Packages and 60 WUA level
Packages under Telangana State.

TSWSIP Components:
The proposed Modernisation works in Telangna has four components:
Component A : Improving irrigation service delivery and management in
Nagarjunasagar Scheme
Component B : Agricultural Component
Component C : Water sector institutional restructuring and capacity building
Component D : Project Management

Source of Funding : World Bank

Lift Irrigation Schemes

The (41+1) LI Schemes were constructed on NSLBC between Km.7.27 to Km.164.20 in

Nalgonda and Khammam districts to create an irrigation potential of 86,641
Acres. Most of the existing 41+1 schemes on NSP left canal were implemented during
1969 to 1993 year. The lifts were being maintained by co-operative societies and later
on these lifts were handed to APSIDC.

These LI Schemes have become old and not performing satisfactory therefore
the Government have included these schemes under “AP water sector Improvement
project (APWSIP)” funded by world bank aided project with providing new Electro-
Mechanical equipments such as, transformers, new motors, new pipelines and lining to
the canal works to reach the water to tail end ayacut on a comprehensive study on
modernization of lift irrigation schemes. Actually the L.I Schemes were designed for 16
hours continuous power supply.

Out of 41+1 L.I schemes, 41 L.I Schemes are located in Nalgonda district starting
from Km. 7.27 to Km. 133.00 along NagarjunaSagar Left Bank Canal. The remaining 1
(one) scheme is located in khammam district at Km. 164.20 on NSLBC.
