DIDACTICAL PROPOSAL

Justification
This work aims to make a teaching proposal using the CLIL method, therefore it tries to
address what this new methodology based on second language learning consists of, through
its introduction in the curriculum of non-linguistic areas. That is, to teach areas such as
science or another area through a second language such as English. This methodology
arises from the need to improve students' proficiency in second languages. The
incorporation of language teaching in other areas offers a series of advantages to the
students since it allows them to learn in other contexts and in real communicative situations
and offers a greater exposure of hours of the target language. With the aim of showing how
this learning is carried out, we are going to work on the elaboration of a didactic unit
dedicated to the Universe and aimed at 3rd grade students.
Objectives
To know the communicative approach emphasizing the CLIL methodology as the most
suitable for a multilingual education.
To prepare a didactic unit that exemplifies how to introduce the CLIL method using the
universe for 3rd grade as a theme.
Introduction
Today's society is characterized by being globalized, so there is an interrelation between
countries. For this reason, mastering a second language has become a priority in the
educational system. The Great Britain School (GBS), is a bilingual school which aims to be
at the same level of current and rapid changes worldwide, so it considers the English
language as an essential and fundamental vehicle of communication for its learners, so Both
the design of this teaching proposal aims to meet the high standards of the institution using
the CLIL approach, which has been shown to give good results in learning a second
language through the content of a subject.
Context
The development of this proposal will be carried out in the primary stage, specifically in
grade 3; The didactic unit will revolve around the theme of the universe and will be applied
at The Great Britain School (GBS).
The Great Britain School (GBS) is a bilingual school founded upon the values of a truly
international school community. Its aim is to provide a holistic, inclusive, and
academically challenging educational experience through the medium of English.
At GBS students are inspired and prepared for an evolving world. Values such as
leadership, care community, strong academic core, international mindedness, inclusion, and
performing arts, support the day-to-day life of the school and foster intellectually prepared
students who discover and embrace the ideals of global citizenship.
Its curricular approach for the elementary level is The International Primary Curriculum
(IPC) which is an internationally-minded, thematic, cross-curricular and rigorous teaching
structure which helps to provide pupils with a dynamic and progressive understanding of
the world they live in as well as prepare them for their fast paced and ever changing future
life as workers and adults.
Each IPC unit incorporates a range of subjects including Science, History, Geography, ICT,
Art and PE and provides many opportunities to link literacy and numeracy. Each subject
then has several learning tasks to help teachers to help children achieve a range of IPC
learning goals.
Theoretical framework
The CLIL methodology according to Attard Montalto, Walter, Theodorou, and
Chrysanthou, (sf, p.4) “is about an innovative, flexible and pedagogical approach,
characterized by the use of a language different from the mother tongue of the students to
teach the non-linguistic content ”. This learning system allows:
- A methodology focused on the student: the objective is for the student to learn through
real and upcoming situations.
- A flexible methodology adapts to the student's learning rhythm.
- Promote interactive and autonomous learning: it is autonomous and interactive, allowing
the student to evaluate their own learning.
- Use multiple resources: thanks to the use of ICT, you can use a very innovative and
motivating variety of activities.
- Guide tasks: the type of system you use is the task approach. It is based on a methodology
where a series of activities are designed that aim to carry out a final task.
