“I Pledge”
ADVERTISING ACTIVITY 2

Advertising Activity

Introduction

Advertisements are made to promote a product or service to the public. Different

advertisements can also be used to promote ideas or encourage movements. For this assignment,

we were asked to find an advertisement for product or service that interested us. During this

paper, I will provide a synopsis of the story, describe the characters, setting, plot, and if there is

any conflict, the story raises. I will conclude by discussing which values I would be accepting or

upholding as a consumer.

For this advertisement, I chose a video made for Thai life insurance. The video can be

located at https://youtu.be/K9vFWA1rnWc. The video starts by viewing a young Thai man

walking through the streets of Thailand. As he is walking along, he walks under a spout of water

coming from a building and decides to place a dead-looking plant underneath it. As he continues

walking down the street, he notices a female food cart vendor that is having trouble pushing the

cart upon a curb. The young man offers assistance and pushes the cart upon to the sidewalk. As

the scene plays out, it shows the man-eating lunch and a dog approaching him begging for food.

The man proceeds to give the dog the two pieces of chicken off of his plate as an onlooker

shakes his head in disapproval.

The next scene shows the young man giving money to a woman and her daughter,

begging for money for the daughter’s education. Again, a shop owner watching the scene shakes

his head in disapproval. On the way back to the man’s apartment, he places a bunch of bananas

on his elderly neighbor’s door without her noticing or knowing who placed them there. This

scene asks, what does he ask for in return for performing these actions every day?
ADVERTISING ACTIVITY 3

As the video clip continues, it shows the young many continuing the same routine daily.

The man checks on the plant to ensure it is still watered as it grows every day, he helps the

woman food vendor who seems to expect him to be there daily to help her get her cart upon the

sidewalk, he gives the dog the chicken off his plate, he gives money to the woman and daughter

on the street for the daughter’s education, he offers for a woman his seat on the train, and places

bananas on his neighbor’s door. The video explains that he will never receive recognition or ask

for anything in return but remains anonymous as he continues these routines. The final time of

displaying his daily events shows how his kindness and daily acts have made a difference in each

aspect these peoples or things lives. The plant is growing into a beautiful plant, the dog becomes

his friend and follows him, the young daughter is now able to attend school and obtain an

education, and he becomes friends with the female food vendor. He can witness happiness and

emotions daily that display gratitude when words cannot and shows how beautiful a world can be

when we believe in good.

Although there is no true conflict to the story, it does display that some onlookers do not

agree with the man’s actions. Even though their looks suggest they do not agree at first, upon

seeing these actions every day, they can see the change the man can make with just a little help

or with positive actions. These actions encourage not only the onlookers to make changes and to

lead a more positive role in life, but also to those who are watching the video.

The role the viewer is being invited to play is the role of change and making a positive

impact. The video displays how just one simple act of kindness change someone or something

else’s life for the better. Instead of just focusing on what you can do for yourself, or how you can

be recognized, what can you do to help others?

Conclusion
ADVERTISING ACTIVITY 4

The video wraps by stating, “Thai life insurance, believe in good” (YouTube, 2014,

Minute 2:58). Life insurance is not per se advertised as much as making a difference in other

people’s lives and doing good for the sake of good. I was not expecting the advertisement to be

on life insurance based what the video was portraying. As a customer, it promotes the good and

the best in not only people but as a company wanting the best for its customers. The video

promotes the values of compassion, contribution, friendships, happiness, influence, and respect.

These are all the values I would expect a company that I chose life insurance through to uphold.
