Q3Week1Day1
ACTIVITY TITLE: Find the limit.
LEARNING TARGET : Illustrate the limit of a function using a table of values and the graph of
the function.

approximating-limits-from-tables

Main idea to be learned:

Limits are tools for reasoning about function behavior, and tables are tools for reasoning about limits. Through the use
of tables, we can get more precise estimates of limits and more precise illustration of the graphs.

When using a table to approximate limits, it's important to create it in a way that simulates the feeling of getting
"infinitely close" to some desired x-value.

Example:

Approximate this limit: Step 3: Approach x=2 from the right just like we did
from the left. We want to do this in a way that simulates
Note: The function is actually undefined at x=2 because the feeling of getting infinitely close to x=2.
the denominator evaluates to zero, but the limit as xxx
approaches 2 still exists.
Step 1: We'd like to pick a value that's a little bit less (Note: We've removed x=2 from the table to save space,
than x=2 (that is, a value that's "to the left" of 2 when and also because it isn't necessary for reasoning about
thinking about the standard x-axis), so may start with the limit value.)
something like x=1.9 .
The graph the equation x vs fx

Step 2: Try a couple more x-values to simulate the

feeling of getting infinitely close to x=2 from the left.

Notice how our x-values {1.9, 1.99, 1.9999} really "zoom

in" around x=2. A worse choice of x-values would have
been constant increments like {-1,0,1} which aren't very
helpful for thinking about getting infinitely close to x=2.

ACTIVITY TITLE: Follow the rules.
LEARNING TARGET : Compute the limit o exponential ang logarithmic functions using tables.
REFERENCES TITLE: http://help.mathlab.us/159-limit-of-an-exponential-and-logarithmic-function.html

Main idea to be learned:

An exponential function is defined as:
or where b > 0 and b ≠ 0, and x is a real number,

Exponential functions are continuous over the set of real numbers with no jump or hole discontinuities. To
evaluate the limit of an exponential function, plug in the value of c

Example
Evaluate lim
x →1
lnx

Solution. We will construct the table of values for f (x)=lnx. We first approach the number 1 from the left or
through values less than but close to 1.

Intuitively, lim ¿. Now we consider approaching 1 from its right or through values greater than but close
x→ 1−¿lnx=0 ¿
to 1.

Intuitively, lim ¿. As the values of x gets closer to 1, the values of f(x) gets closer and closer to 0. In
x→ 1+¿lnx =0¿
symbols
lim lnx=0 .

Q3Week2Day2
ACTIVITY TITLE: Limits involving trigonometric functions.
LEARNING TARGET: Compute the limit of trigonometric functions..
REFERENCES TITLE: cliffsnotes.com/study-guides/calculus/calculus/limits/limits-involving-trigonometric-functions

Main idea to be learned:

The trigonometric functions sine and cosine have four important limit properties:

You can use these properties to evaluate many limit problems involving the six basic trigonometric functions.

Example 1: Evaluate  .

Substituting 0 for x, you find that cos x approaches 1 and sin x − 3 approaches −3; hence,

Rules Function Integral
Exponential ∫ex dx ex + C
  ∫ax dx ax/ln(a) + C
  ∫ln(x) dx x ln(x) − x + C
Example:

 What is ∫ew − 3 dw ?

Use the Difference Rule:

∫ew − 3 dw =∫ew dw − ∫3 dw

Then work out the integral of each (using table above):

 = ew − 3w + C
 what is the integral of 1/x ?

From the table above it is listed as being ln|x| + C

It is written as:

∫(1/x) dx = ln|x| + C

The vertical bars || either side of x mean absolute value, because we don't want to give negative values to
the natural logarithm function ln.

Trigonometry (x in radians) ∫cos(u) du sin(u) + C

  ∫sin(u) du -cos(u) + C

  ∫sec2(u) du tan(u) + C

Example:
Problem:
∫sin(2x)dx Plug in solved integrals:
1
Substitute u=2x ⟶ du ∫sin(u)du
2
dx=2 (steps) ⟶ dx=12du: =−cos(u)2
1
= 2 ∫sin(u)du Undo substitution u=2x:

=−cos(2x)2
Now solving:

This is a standard integral:
