Chapter 1

The problem and its background

Introduction

Many researchers have studied that children spend average of their time

on different gadgets like telephone, radio, TV, gaming consoles and stereo

system. Families use gadgets for various purposes like playing games, watching

videos, listening songs, chatting with their friends, browsing different websites.

They spend most of their time in these activities and don’t pay attention to their

families and their bonding

The main objective of this study was to determine the impact of gadgets in

learning among Grade 11- Home Economics students at Sumulong College of

Arts and Sciences during the academic year 2019-2020. It looked into the

frequency of use of the gadgets in family relationship which are cellphones,

computers, and tablets and the impact of gadgets in family relationship as

perceived by the students. Further, it determined the significant relationship

between the frequency of use and the impact of gadgets.

The study was conducted at Sumulong College of Arts and Sciences which

included Grade 11 student respondents who are enrolled in the Information

Communication Technology strand during the academic year 2019-2020.


Background of the study

In today’s generation, technology has affected and changed the way people

live. Technology has made people’s lives more proficient and at ease. There is

hardly anyone who has not been changed by the advances in technology and

computers of today’s society. Many people have lesser stress in their lives

because there are new useful hi-tech inventions created each day to help them

do things quicker and easier. Some of these helpful technologies are cell phones,

computers, and the Internet.

Over using gadgets may impact the mind of an individual. The individual loses

focus as he/she only concentrates on using gadgets or technology. He/she tends

to forget other aspect of life that is important, concentration reduces and the

individual cannot focus on other issues for long enough.

There is little doubt that technology is affecting family relationships on a day-

to-day level. Children are instant messaging constantly, checking their social

media, listening to music, surfing their favorite web sites, and watching television

or movies. Because of the emergence of mobile technology, these practices are

no longer limited to the home, the use of technology in schools has opened up a

new path of effective learning. Technology plays a great role in developing

everyone’s future and professional career. Technology is becoming a major part

of the world today. It has developed and become more central to learning. The

researchers want to know the impact of gadgets in family relationship


Another study reported that family time was not affected when technology was

used for school but did hurt family communications when used for social reasons.

Interestingly, children who spent considerable time on a popular social

networking site indicated that they felt less supported by their parents.

Theoretical Framework

Integrating mobile learning into the classroom allows teachers to move from

Shulman's (1986) Pedagogical Content Knowledge way of teaching to Koehler &

Mishra (2008) Technological, Pedagogical, and Content Knowledge framework to

create the most engaging learning environment. 

This study explored undergraduate student and instructors' usage of mobile

devices in and out of formal class. Those uses were used to suggest ways in

which educators can build on to take mobile learning to the next level. 
Conceptual Framework

The paradigm on the next page shows the conceptual framework of the study.

It presented how the researches accomplished the study

The first frame shows the input. It includes the profile of the respondents as

well as the variables related to the study

The second frame shows the process. It shows the construction and

validation of the interview questionnaire guide, as well as the actual conduct of

the interviews. Moreover, responses collected from the respondents were

interpreted and analyzed

Statement of the problem

This study aims to determine the impact of using gadgets to the family

relations. Specifically, the researchers wanted to answer the following question:

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1. Age; and

1.2. Sex

2. What are the impact of using gadgets to the family bond in terms of:

2.1. Communication

2.2. Time management

2.3. Culture

3. What are ways that gadgets may be use to build positive family

relationship

Scope and limitation

The main purpose of the study is to know the impact of using gadgets to the

family relations

This study was conducted in the second semester school 2019-2020 and was

conducted in Sumulong College of Arts and Sciences


Significance of the study

This study will significantly help the following:

Students. This study will help them realize that they shall uphold a good

time management in terms of their quality time with their family and be

responsible in using the gadgets

Parents. This study will serve as their reminder that they shall be

responsible in providing limitations in their child especially in their relationship

with the family and proper use of gadgets

Teachers. This study will facilitate the teachers in executing and giving

advices to students.

Researchers. This study will signify as their fulfillment to provide and

contribute to their fellow students.

Future Researchers. This study will help the future researchers as this study will

guide them if they want to conduct a similar study


Definition of terms

To further understand this study, the following terms are conceptually defined

Impact. The effect or influence of one person, thing, or action, on another.

Gadgets. A small mechanical or electronic device or tool, especially an

ingenious or novel one

Relationship. The way in which two or more concepts, objects, or people are

connected, or the state of being connected.

Family. A group consisting of parents and children living together in a household .

Communication. The imparting or exchanging of information or news.

Time management. The ability to use one's time effectively or productively

Culture. The customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial,

religious, or social group

Values. How a person behave in society
