CRITIQUE REPORT ON ASSESSING THE LEVEL OF AWARENESS ON


CLIMATE CHANGE AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AMONG STUDENTS
OF PARTIDO STATE UNIVERSITY, CAMARINES, PHILIPPINES.

Introduction

The introduction part in the study is very brief and informative along with its
supporting details and studies. The author state, “the participation of youth in any disaster
risk reduction activities could be enhanced when they have high levels of awareness on
climate change. But there seems to be scanty information about their level of awareness”, that
emphasize who will play a major role in his study. The authors indicate specific
objectives/aims of his study that is highly commendable. I suggest that he should indicate the
location and specific respondent of his study.

Statement of the Problem

As the research suggest, that disaster risk reduction activities between participation of
the youth can be influential in assessing the level of awareness on climate change. This is
illustrated in the authors’ transcription of an interaction among the participation of the youth
and DRRR activities along with commentary. More specifically, the authors note that there
seems to be scanty information about their level of awareness.
Specific research question or hypothesis is noted, and the authors do address the overall
context for their qualitative study. The author state “the study aimed to answer the following
questions:

1. What is the level of awareness on climate change of selected undergraduate


students of Partido State University?

2. What factors will students perceived to significantly influence their level of


awareness on climate change, and will they differ across year levels?

3. What channel of information will students perceive as important in improving their


level of awareness of climate change, and will they differ across year levels?

The statement of the problem part is highly commendable in terms of giving general
to specific question that is related to the topic.

Review of Literature

The authors begin with a brief review of literature that supports the ideas that presents
literature on the role of youth in climate change adaptation, role of higher education
institutions in enhancing the level of awareness of youth on climate change, and the
importance of increasing the level of awareness of youth on climate change adaptation and
disaster risk reduction. The author mentioned the role of the youth, and the higher education
which is good.

Next, the authors review literature that supports the “as youth plays crucial role in
climate change adaptation, there is a need to enhance their awareness of climate change.
Increasing the level of their awareness on climate change could therefore promote the
creation of a climate resilient society especially in the developing countries because they
have the energy to lead towards such future. In addition, they could be encouraged to actively
engage at local, national, and global levels in raising awareness about the risks and impacts of
climate change”. This statement by the author makes the review of the literature become
more interesting in readers.
The authors clearly point out the gaps in the existing literature. “Climate change is a
major issue for all levels of government, global, national and local, youth could be tapped to
participate in decision-making and policy-making related to climate change”. This
necessitates that youth should be empowered. The authors conclude their study provides an
important step in furthering understanding of indicated that universities’ initiatives in
enhancing youth’s level of awareness could impact the economy, and in fact, could be
apparent because of intense scholarly and policy interest among universities in the last years.

Methodology

The author state that he used descriptive survey method involving the students of
Partido State University (PSU), Camarines Sur, Philippines which is highly recommended in
terms of selecting your respondent randomly. Using the using 5 point Likert- type Scale, the
student participants are described in terms their sex and year level and respondents’ level of
awareness of climate change, sources of information about climate change, and the factors
that influenced respondents’ level of awareness.

Data collection methods are described in considerable detail as one would expect with
a qualitative study but the author not indicated the research method used specifically in
getting the data from its respondent (for example, questionnaire, interviews, surveys and
other collection method). Reliability and validity issues were addressed by the authors who
noted how they ensured reliability of data obtained and the triangulation of sources of data.

Results and Discussion

The authors begin by relating their findings back to the overall purpose of the study,
to develop respondent’s level of awareness on climate change. Illustration of tables is
emphasizing in different areas. The findings are much related to its statement of the problem.
The author also note the respondent perceived factors in level of awareness and respondents
sources of information about climate change.
The author stated in his findings “students of PSU have much awareness on climate
change issue regardless of year level (overall weighted mean = 3.8). In fact, they are much
aware that climate change is already happening; it manifests in diverse ways; people are
already experiencing its impacts; it is an immediate and urgent concern; it is a threat to
sustainable development; and there are research institutions in various levels that look into
this issue”, this means that author successfully get what he want in study.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the authors state that there is considerable evaluation of the awareness
level on climate change as experienced by first, second, third, and fourth year students. The
author asserts his research does help to establish that “powerful role of youth in impacting
climate change and how different societal forces influence students’ understanding on climate
change”.

Finally, the authors make suggestions for future research including empirical studies
with larger sample sizes, use of both male and female student, across grade levels and with
researchers from various studies on climate change.
