Job Description for Business Consultant (Worked Example)


Job Title: Business Consultant
Reports to: Karen Smith, CLO

Job Purpose
The Business Consultant works with the business on behalf of L&D to ensure alignment of learning and development
initiatives with business strategies and priorities. This role goes beyond traditional performance consulting tasks such as
needs analyses and learning inventories to encompass true consulting responsibilities. The business consultant should be
able to assess business needs and make sound recommendations that may or may not include a training component.
Duties and Responsibilities
 Build strong relationships with the business line to become a trusted partner in achieving business results
 Work with business units to identify specific skills or gaps with negative impact and help identify actions that will improve
overall business performance
 Look holistically at the business and recommend actions that may or may not include a training element
Qualifications
 Background in business consulting and / or performance management
 Ability to collaborate on design and development efforts in a team environment
 Adept at identifying and framing problems, setting priorities, and making critical assessments
 Proven ability to bring about change and manage processes
 Willing to listen and articulate a clear vision with tact and discretion
 Eager to understand the unique cultures that exists in the business functions served
 Aware of best practices of other organizations and external market conditions
 Proven ability to understand the needs of diverse business units, identify creative solutions, and own recommendations
 Ability to confidently engage with staff at all levels to define needs and expectations, collaborate on projects, and
communicate results
 Ability to manage multiple task assignments simultaneously and work effectively in a fast paced environment
 Experience using standard IT tools and workplace practices and the ability to make appropriate technology

Job Description for Content Curator (Worked Example)


Job Title: Content Curator
Reports to: Karen Smith, CLO

Job Purpose
The Content Curator role manages and distributes collections of learning assets and experiences that are often hosted on
multiple platforms and delivered via digital devices. He / she ensures that information is up to date, accessible, and in formats
that appeal to learners while meeting their needs.
Duties and Responsibilities
 Gather and organize the most useful information from both internal and external sources into one easily accessed
location
 Contextualize the collection by tagging, ordering, commenting, adding supporting information, linking, and rating content
 Maintain the information and learning assets in the collection to ensure they remain relevant and up to date
 Respond to queries about content, learning organization, and contacts
 Work with IT, designers, business line, and other organizations to identify and fill L&D needs from existing materials
Qualifications
 Knowledge and working experience with Learning Management Systems (LMSs), content management systems, digital
asset management, databases, and SEO practices
 Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact well with multiple departments
 In-depth understanding of the social web, digital media, and digital learning sources
 Ability to develop a content strategy across digital channels with an eye toward organizing material and developing
efficient delivery mechanisms
 Ability to work with creative, strategic, and technical teams to define the content needs for websites and applications
 Ability to develop content audits, gap analyses, taxonomies, metadata frameworks, style guides, editorial calendars,
curator guidelines, and content migration plans as needed to support projects
 Ability to work with business units to source, enhance, edit, and reformat legacy content
 Ability to work closely with creative directors and copywriting teams to centralize content deliverables and to inspire
audiences to do the same

Job Description for UX Designer (Worked Example)


Job Title: User Experience (UX) Designer
Reports to: Karen Smith, CLO

Job Purpose
The UX Designer supports the L&D team by ensuring that the user’s experience with all learning assets, particularly those
found in digital tools (i.e., apps, e-learning, and portals), is consistent, cohesive, and engaging. The UX Designer works with
instructional designers, programmers, and artists to reduce distraction from learning and increase learner motivation.
Duties and Responsibilities
 Focus on the type of experience learners have with an application or learning experience, in both interaction and visual
design
 Look at learning applications holistically to ensure that they incorporate the appropriate interactions, animations, visual
aspects, and flow to meet learner needs in an appealing manner
 Research and keep abreast of current user experience and technology trends
Qualifications
 UX design experience for software, web applications which leverage emergent technologies, consumer electronics, and /
or mobile devices
 Strong conceptualization ability, strong visual communication ability, drawing skills, and sketchbook technique
 Ability to create wireframes as well as visual design comps
 Strong working knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Fireworks, 3D modeling, After Effects, rendering,
animation, and associated design tools
 Experience with user interface design patterns and standard user-centered design (UCD) methodologies
 Understanding of common software project management and development practices
 Strong working knowledge of HTML, HTML5, CSS, Rails, JavaScript / JQuery, ObjectiveC (iOS), and C++ (Android)
 Experience with video and sound editing
 Degree in interaction design, new media design, or related design field

Job Purpose
As part of the L&D team, the Product Manager role manages learning offerings as products that need to be updated and
marketed rather than static offerings that do not change.
Duties and Responsibilities
 Assess the viability of new technologies as learning tools and stay current on emerging digital trends, practices, and
technologies
 Manage and deliver L&D products and technologies through all phases from concept to implementation
 Manage all business / production aspects of the L&D product to ensure it is delivered as designed and within budget,
including managing scope and production schedules, forecasting cost estimates, managing production and marketing
budgets, and assembling and directing a team
 Ensure L&D product is reviewed at the appropriate levels with legal, marketing, and business stakeholders
 Understand essential aspects of learning design with emphasis on digital learning solutions that address learner
workflow and challenges
 Incorporate learner-focused solutions that have strong value propositions, meet demonstrated business needs, and
provide the organization with competitive advantages
 Anticipate L&D industry trends, especially digital learning solutions grounded in a market knowledge gained through
data-driven market research
 Track all L&D product activity and adapt product or product line as needed
 Serve as a valued solutions-based partner to other business units to meet the organization’s business goals more
effectively
 Create and maintain a solid relationship with IT and align the L&D technology roadmap with the organization technology
roadmap
Qualifications
 Relevant and successful previous product management, marketing, sales, or development experience
 Understanding of basic learning and development functional responsibilities
 Proven excellence in developing and articulating a vision and strategy that meets business goals
 Understanding of digital functionality and how content is best utilized to communicate information
 Demonstrated experience in determining learner needs and challenges and translating those to L&D products
 Outstanding communication skills, including the ability work within both corporate and entrepreneurial environments
 Ability to champion and execute learner and business-oriented new and innovative approaches, ideas, methods,
processes, products, and services
 Strong negotiation and influencing skills

The Communications Manager influences how employees and managers perceive both learning and the L&D function
throughout the organization.

 Provide consistent, overall messages about the L&D function to the entire organization
 Increase the perceived value of learning, including the purpose and priority, and engage the organization in the learning
process
 Ensure an engaging and consistent learner experience across the organization
 Brand the learning function within the organization to ensure the look and feel, identity, and overall learner experience
are consistent and on message
 Clearly communicate L&D’s purpose and priorities to the organization
Qualifications
 Communications professional with relevant experience in Talent / HR internal and external communications
 Strong knowledge of internal / external communications strategic practices including the use of social media
 Ability to think strategically, connect the dots, and create a cohesive message across all media, learning methods,
technologies, etc.
 Ability to work well in a team environment and with leadership
 Strong writing and editing skills
 Superlative project management skills
 Ability to work and achieve results — with minimal supervision — in an intense, fast-paced environment and manage
multiple projects simultaneously
 Ability to work well under pressure and handle tough issues effectively and professionally
 Degree in communications, English, or business, with expertise in communications practices preferred
 Experience in measuring the effectiveness of communications strategies and approaches both internally and externally
