ROLE OF INSTRUMENTATION &

MEASUREMENTS

INSTRUMENTATIONS:-
The term instrumentation may refer to a device or group of devices used for
direct reading thermometers or, when using many sensors, may become part of a
complex industrial control system in such as manufacturing industry, vehicles and
transportation. Instrumentation can be found in the household as well; a smoke
detector or a heating thermostat are examples.
IMPORTANCE OF INSTRUMENTATION:-
Instrumentation is the basic process control in industry. In industrial control a wide
number of variables temperature, flow, level, pressure, and distance can be sensed
simultaneously. All of these can be interdependent variables in a single processing
require a complex microprocessor system for total control. Due to more
advancement in technology and the efficient measurement techniques instruments
that we are using today may be obsolete in future.
During specifying the instrumentation the main objectives of the designer are :-
 Safe plant operation
 High production rate
 To maintain the product composition within the specified quality limits.
 Lowest production cost.

MEASUREMENT:-
Measurement is the assignment of a number to a characteristic of an object or
event, which can be compared with other objects or events. Measurement is a
cornerstone of trade, science, technology, and quantitative research in many
disciplines.
IMPORTANCE OF MEASUREMENT:-
A measurement is the action of measuring something, or some amount of stuff. So
it is important to measure certain things right, distance, time, and accuracy are all
great things to measure. By measuring these things or in other words, by taking
these measurements we can better understand the world around us. Measurements
can also allow us to make decisions based on the outcome of the measurement. By
this reasoning measurements are extremely important because they shape the way
we think and interact every day.
ROLES IN SCIENCE:-
INSTRUMENTATION: -
Research instruments are tools used to acquire data (i.e., research results) during
experimental investigations. They are fundamental in all branches of science (e.g.,
cell counters and sorters, microscopes, PCR machines (polymerase chain
reaction), sonogram recorders, etc., in biomedical science; chromatographs,
spectroscopes, ultrarapid recorders, x-ray diffractometers, etc., in chemistry; and,
atomic force microscopes, electron diffractometers, magnetometers, terrestrial and
space telescopes, etc., in physics). Some research instruments are huge, but are
used to examine very small specimens such as atoms and molecules, while other
instruments are small, but are used to examine gigantic specimens such as
volcanoes and oceans. Thermometers are simple instruments that continue to be
widely used by both scientists and ordinary people.
MEASUREMENT: -
Scientists use many skills as they investigate the world around them. They make
observations by gathering information with their senses. Some observations are
simple. For example, a simple observation would be figuring out the color or
texture of an object. However, if scientists want to know more about a substance,
they may need to take measurements. Measurement is perhaps one of the most
fundamental concepts in science. Without the ability to measure, it would be
difficult for scientists to conduct experiments or form theories. Not only is
measurement important in science and the chemical industry, it is also essential in
farming, engineering, construction, manufacturing, commerce, and numerous other
occupations and activities.
Conclusion: -
Instrumentation and measurements are both very necessary. Without any one the
world cannot proceed as accuracy is required, with minimum percentage error in
any calculation or experiment.
