A. What is the difference between DC motors and the Induction motors? B. Why the d.c. series motor should always be started with load? C. Explain the ways of cooling the transformer? D. What are the possible states of Thyristor Silicon Controlled Rectifier (SCR)? E. State the types of circuit breakers and explain one of them?
Q2: (25 Marks)
A short-shunt compound generator has armature, shunt field and series field resistances of 0.5 Ω, 100 Ω, and 0.3 Ω respectively. When supplying a load of 8 kW at a terminal voltage of 250 V the input power supplied by the driving motor is 10.4 kW. Calculate (a) the generated emf, (b) the efficiency, (c) the iron, friction and windage loss, and (d) the total fixed losses.

A 380-V, 50 Hz, 45-hp, three phase induction motor is drawing 50A at 0.85 PF lagging. The stator copper losses are 2.2 kW, and the rotor copper losses are 600 W. The friction and windage losses are 500 W, the core losses are 1850 W, and the stray losses are negligible. Find: 1) The air-gap power, 2) The power converted, 3) The output power, 4) The efficiency of the motor.

A 20kVA transformer has 450 turns on the primary and 45 turns on the secondary winding. The primary is connected to 2500V, 50Hz supply. Find: a) Full load primary current. b) The induced voltage in the secondary winding. c) The maximum flux in the core.
