CLASS: ______________________
FINAL GRADE: __________
For the first part of the Exam I will provide various statements and words. You will tell me if
what I am saying is an ELEMENT, COMPOUND/PURE SUBSTANCE, HOMOGENOUS
MIXTURE, HETEROGENOUS MIXTURE, CHEMICAL REACTION, PHYSICAL
REACTION, CHEMICAL PROPERITY, EXTENSIVE PHSICAL PROPERTY, INTENSIVE
PHYSICAL PROPERTY.
1. NaO3 16. The combustion point of element X is
199K.
2. Milk
17. Copper is conductive.
3. Melting Ice
18. Hydrochloric acid is acidic.
4. Hydrogen
19. Snake venom is toxic.
5. Au
20. Orange juice with pulp.
6. When smoke fills a room.
21. Orange juice without pulp.
7. Burning paper
22. Steel
8. Spoiled milk
23. Steel is malleable.
9. Iron can be magnetic.
24. Steel, when heated to 1370 degrees
10. Flattening Aluminum to foil. Celsius, melts.

11. Potassium 25. The air we breathe.

12. Baking soda 26. Baking soda mixed with vinegar.

13. KNO3 27. Phosphor emitting light after being hit

with charged particles.
14. Iron rusting
28. I run an electric current through a copper
15. Sugar dissolves in water. wire, and it creates a magnetic field.
For the second part of the exam you will be asked to conduct a series of experiments and
answer questions based on your results. For directions on the experiments refer to the exam
experiments PowerPoint. BE SURE TO READ ALL OF YOUR QUESTIONS BEFORE YOU
START YOUR EXPERIMENTS!

Experiment A
1. Observe the cube of gallium. Describe its noticeable physical properties.

2. Observe the ice. Describe its noticeable physical properties.

3. As you observe what happens to the gallium in your hand, describe what is taking place,
and is it similar or different to what is happening with the ice?

4. As the gallium is resting in the petri dish what is happening to it? As the ice rests on the
table in the clothe what is happening to it?

5. State weather or not the gallium and ice were pure substances, mixtures, elements,
compounds, or a combo of any of these. You can consider the ice as uncontaminated
water.
Experiment B

1. Describe the kind of chemical properties you observed during the experiment for each
material, Zinc and Hydrochloric acid, and what kind of reaction did you witness,
chemical or physical?

2. The equation for the reaction that took place is Zn + HCl ZnCl2 (aq) + H2. State
weather or not each part is an element, compound, mixture, or pure substance.

Zn:

HCl:

ZnCl2 (aq):

H2:

3. Explain the reasons for your answers in question 2.

4. What is your reasoning behind calling this a physical or chemical reaction?

Experiment C

1. Describe the physical properties observed in the liquids.

2. The lemon juice and milk are examples of what types of mixtures. After they are
combined what type of mixture is presented?

3. When you add the lemon juice to the milk it is an example of what kind of reaction and
what properties are observed that tell you this.

Experiment D
1. When you finish building your contraption does it display physical or chemical
properties?

2. What can be said about the interaction of your nail and the paperclips? Are you
witnessing a chemical reaction and why?

3. Use your contraption and test how it reacts with 3 other objects in the room and record
your results.
Experiment E
1. What you are observing is electrolysis, or an electric current splitting the bonds, between
the hydrogen and oxygen in the water to produce hydrogen and oxygen gas, respectively.
What kind of reaction is taking place, and what is being made? Compounds? Elements?
And is it a pure or mixed substance that is made?

2. Why clues helped you distinguish the type of reaction that took place?

3. The respective gases created are mixing into the air around you and this is an example of
what kind of mixture?

For the final part, a series of questions based on your experiment results will be asked.
Answer them to the best of your ability.

1. What physical and chemical properties were observed that helped you identify weather or
not a substance was pure or mixed.
Experiment A; Gallium and Ice-
Experiment B; Zinc and Hydrochloric Acid-

Experiment C; Milk and Lemon Juice-

Experiment D; Iron and Copper-

Experiment E; Water, Hydrogen, and Oxygen-

2. In your own words define the following terms:

Element-

Compound-

Pure Substance-

Heterogenous Mixture-

Homogenous Mixture-

Chemical Reaction-

Physical Reaction-

Chemical Property-

Physical Property-
Extensive Physical Property-

Intensive Physical Property-

3. Describe how physical and chemical properties are used to differentiate between pure and
mixed substances.
