Title: Once I Saw A Little Bird Grade Level: Kindergarten Source: The Singing Classroom

Materials needed:
● Unpitched percussion instruments
Homemade maracas, drums, etc.
Lyrics: Once I saw a little bird come hop, hop, hop

So I called out, “little bird, please stop stop stop!”

I was going to the window, to say “how do you do?”

But he shook his little tail, and away he flew.

Procedure:
A.S: What are some things you might see a bird doing? Birds have something called flight
feathers that help them fly. If their feathers are clipped they won’t be able to fly but eventually
they will be able to fly again because their feathers will grow back. When birds fly they travel to
different places that have good weather. For example when winter comes birds travel to warmer
places and that is why you don’t see as many birds when it is cold. Today we are going to learn a
song about birds!
1. Sing song to students one line at a time and have them repeat back.
2. Sing song all the way through.
3. Teach motions one line at a time.
First line: hands above eyes for “once I saw”, flying hands for “little bird” , hand hopping
on other hand for “hop, hop, hop,”
Second line: hands around mouth for “so I called out”, flying hands for “little bird” , hand
up three times for “stop, stop, stop”
Third line: draw a rectangle out with fingers in front of you for “I was going to the
window,” palms out and facing upwards

Fourth line: shake your tail for “But he shook his little tail”, flying hands for “little bird”
4. Sing the full song with motions.
5. Remind students that flight feathers help birds fly and that the bird in the song has them
and could be migrating.
6. Introduce instruments and explain where to play them. They play on the words:Hop hop
hop, Stop stop stop, how do you do? away he flew
7. Ask them what those feathers that help birds fly are called. Where do birds fly in the
winter? What is that called?
8. Practice with instruments all together while singing songs together.
9. Assign groups (one motion group and one instrument groups) Remind about tails feathers
10. Perform the whole song with assigned task (motion or instrument)
11. Have students switch roles.
12. Ask students concluding questions.

Closure: What helps a bird fly? If a bird's flight feathers are cut can they ever fly again? Do birds
travel to specific places? What is bird traveling called?

Educational Objective: By the end of this lesson, students will have learned about migration and
the flight feathers on birds.
