Question 1

Figure Q1 showed half wave rectifier. The step down transformer has turn ration 10:1. Cut in
voltage for diode is 0.3V. Calculate the following:

Figure Q1

(i) Output load current, Io.

(ii) Average output voltage Vo(dc), and average load current, Io(dc)
(iii) Peak reverse voltage, PIV.
(iv) Draw the output waveform.
Solution
(i)
Vrms = 240V
V1( rms ) = 240V
V1( rms ) 240V
V2( rms ) = = 24V
turns ratio 10
V2( m ) = 2V2( rms ) = 2 ´ 24V = 34V
Vo ( m ) = 34 - 0.3 = 33.7V
Vo ( m ) 33.7
Io(m) = = = 0.337 A
R 100
(ii)

Vm 33.7
Vdc = = = 10.72V
p p
(iii)

PIV = V2( m ) = 34V

Question 2

For the given voltage regulator using Zener diode as shown in Figure Q2. Determine the load
current and the zener current.

Figure Q2

Solution

I = IZ + IL
V0 6V
IL = = = 3mA
RL 2k W

When the input voltage at 12V, voltage dropped across R, VR = 12V - 6V = 6V

VR 6V
I= = = 6mA
R 1K W
I Z = I - I L = 6mA - 3mA = 3mA
Question 3

For the silicon diode circuit of Figure Q3. Answer the following:

(i) Determine ID. Assume R = 4kW, and Rf = 10W;

(ii) Recalculate the current taking Rf = 0.

Figure Q3

Solution
(i)

VS - Vg 5 - 0.7
ID = = = 1.072mA
R + Rf 4x10 3 + 10

VS - Vg 5 - 0.7
(ii) ID = = = 1.075mA
R + Rf 4x10 3 + 0
