CULTURAL INSIGHT
Wai is the common gesture that Thai people do when they’re saying “Hello.” Most of the time,
younger people do Wai to people who are older than them or are of a higher social status. Wai
is a way of showing respect toward others. If someone gives you a Wai, it means that they are
paying respect towards you, too. To return their good manners, you should do Wai back.
Doing Wai is easy; simply put your palms together in front of your chest.

CULTURAL INSIGHT
In Thai, you can use the same verb to say both "I am fine" and “I am sick.” The verb Sà-baai
means “fine,” and you can change its meaning from “fine” to “sick” by simply adding the prefix
mâi, meaning “no” or “not”. You say sà-baai to mean “fine” and mâi sà-baai to mean “sick”.
Literally, it means “not fine.”

CULTURAL INSIGHT
Sometimes, you’ll be asked if you speak Thai. When you speak in Thai, don't worry about
your accent or not choosing the right words or tones. Thai people will try their best to
understand if you try to speak their language. This is because not many foreigners make an
effort to speak Thai in general. We appreciate when someone speaks our language so don’t
hesitate to speak Thai words.

Beyond learning someone's age, there are several reasons that you should understand how
to read numbers in Thai. One big challenge will be talking in Thai at a bank. When we go to a
bank in Thailand, we first receive a queue number. When it's your turn, a computerized voice
will announce your number in Thai. First it will say Mǎai-lêek which means “number”, then the
number in Thai. For example, Mǎai-lêek Nùeng, “Number 1” or Mǎai-lêek Sǎawng, “number
two”.

means something like “very.” For example, to say “very beautiful” add mâak and say sǔuai

CULTURAL INSIGHT
When you want to ask what someone is doing now, you can use the word yùu. It can be used
as an auxiliary verb to indicate progressive tense. So the question will be tham à-rai yùu?
meaning “What are you doing?” Tham means “to do”, à-rai is “what” and yùu in this phrase is
an auxiliary verb. You can answer the questions with yùu too, for example, "I am working"
which is tham-ngaan yùu. “I am having a meal" is gin khâao yùu, and "I am studying" is riian
yùu.

emphasize your request. This is a particle indicating a yes or no question. For example, if you

means “You have a phone, don’t you?” But be sure to use this phrase only in an informal

If you go to Thailand, a cellphone will be one of the things you need to get within your first
week. There are three major cell phone carriers in Thailand—Dtac, AIS and True Move. Dtac
is considered to be the most reasonably priced while AIS claims to have the best coverage.
True Move is also a very large corporation with many store locations throughout the country.
All of them offer prepaid SIM cards where you can buy a cell phone service very cheaply.
