Visualizing Multiplication of Fractions

Using Models

In visualization of multiplication of fractions, we have the

following steps to follow:

1) Illustrate the fractions

Illustrate first the 2nd fraction followed by the 1st fraction and may begin
shading from left, right, top or bottom. Make sure that illustrations have
opposite shading, colors and lines (vertical or horizontal).

2) Combine the two illustrations

We combine/merge the illustration of two fractions.

3) Count the double – shaded part:

Count the part that has been shaded twice (darker part). The double shaded
part becomes our new numerator.

4) Count all the parts the whole is divided: and

The total number of parts the whole is divided becomes the new denominator.

5) Simplify if needed.
Simplify the answer, if needed.

STEP 2
Combine the two illustrations.

= Notice that the intersection of

the shadings from the two
illustrations created the double-
shaded parts.

STEP 3
𝟒 Count the double – shaded part.
=
𝟏𝟓 We have 4 double – shaded parts. This
becomes the new numerator.

STEP 4
Count all the parts of the whole is divided.
The result will be 15 total parts. This becomes our new
denominator.

STEP 5
Simplify if needed.

We have 6 double – shaded their GCF (6).
parts . This becomes the new (6 ÷ 6)/(12 ÷ 6) = 1/2
numerator.

STEP 4

Count all the parts the whole is divided

The result will be 12 total parts. This
becomes our new denominator.

Multiplying a Fraction and a Whole Number and

another Fraction

6
Jian and Jermagne hiked for kilometer an hour
7
to reach their destination. How far did they travel in
4 hours?

To find the distance travelled by Jian and Jermagne, we have to multiply

6 by 4 6 x 4 = 6 x 4 = 24 = 3 3
7 7 7 1 7 7

Jian and Jermagne traveled 3 3 kilometers for 4 hours.

To multiply a whole number by a fraction, multiply the numerator of the fraction
by the whole number and place the product over the denominator. Then reduce the
answer to the lowest term

A. Multiplication of Mixed Numbers and Whole Numbers.

Some avocados are placed on 3 plates to be served for visitors. How many
avocados are there in all?

3 times 1 1 avocado
2

To multiply mixed number by a whole number, change the mixed number to

an improper fraction first. Then multiply the numerator of the improper fraction by

71
the whole number and placed the product over the denominator. Reduce the answer to
lowest term.

3x 11 = 3x 3 = 9 = 41 There are 4 1 avocados to be
