ACTIVITY ON NATIONALISM AND NATION BUILDING

A. Answer the following questions.
1. How patriotism and Nationalism differ from each other? Site some examples.
 The difference between patriotism and nationalism is that the patriot is
proud of his country for what it does , and the nationalist is proud of his country
no matter what it does ; the first attitude creates a feeling of responsibility while
the second a feeling of blind arrogance that leads to a war .”
Nationalism stresses unity based on a cultural background, including language
and heritage. Patriotism, rooted in the love for a nation, emphasizes values and
beliefs.
Patriotism, I think, predates the concept of nationhood. It's about the land and the
people you live with and emotionally and intellectually identify with.

According to, Economist philosopher Adam Smith believed in "allowing

every man to pursue his own interest in his own way, upon the liberal plan of
equality, liberty, and justice.” This idea became known as liberalism. However, all
good Communists become strong nationalists once in power. Nationalism works
better than internationalism to hold on to power. Evident in China, Vietnam, Cuba
and the old Soviet Union where Georgian Joseph Stalin rallied the people behind
Mother Russia.

2. How important nationalism and patriotism to have a better nation?

 Nationalism values the cultural, religious, and ethnic unity of a people,
patriotism is the love of a people's common liberty, which gives us the strength to
resist oppression by the selfish ambitions of particular individuals. In addition,
patriotism is a rational love, since civic virtue is instrumental to the preservation
of law and order, which is the prerequisite of our liberty. The question we must
address is how to make our particular love of one's own country compatible with
the universal principles of liberty and justice. Through a historical interpretation of
patriotism from classical antiquity to contemporary debates, Viroli explores the
possibility of patriotism without nationalism. One that emphasizes political unity
based on the republican commitment to the common good, rather than cultural,
religious, or ethnic homogeneity.
