Introduction
Be Good day everyone especially to our Grade 11 students. I Hope you are
doing great! Welcome to GIYA on Air. I am Teacher Pede Casing your
Mathemazing Mathematics teacher in Pre-Calculus, Quarter, Week 7, Lesson
2. Today, you will learn how to differentiate a series from a sequence.
Are you ready?

fore we begin, make sure you have your GIYA Learning Activity Sheets with
you on Lesson 2, and pen and paper for the different activities.
Body
- A sequence is a list of numbers or objects which have been arranged
in a sequential way.
- A series can be highly generalized as the sum of all the terms in a
sequence.

- The table shows the difference between sequence and series.

Flash:

Sequence Series
Set of elements that follow a Sum of elements of the
pattern sequence
Order of elements is important Order of elements is not so
important.
Finite sequence: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 Finite series:1+2+3+4+5
Infinite sequence: 1,2,3,4, … Infinite series: 1+2+3+4+...

A sequence is a list of numbers (separated by commas), while a

series is a sum of numbers (separated by “+” or “-“ sign) as an illustration,
1, -1/2, 1/3, -1/4 is a sequence,

and 1 – ½ + 1/3 - 1/4=7/12 is its associated series.

- It is easy, right?

From the illustrations, we can say that the sequence with nth term an is
usually denoted by {an}, and the associated series is given by
Sn= a1+ a2 + a3 + ⋯+ an
Now, it is your turn to do Guided/Practice Activity.

Directions: Write SEQ if the given item is a sequence and write SER if it
is a series.
1. ) 1, 2, 4, 8, …. Answer: SEQ
Now, you will answer the remaining tasks.
(READ THE ITEM TWICE)

2. ) -1+1-1+1-1+1 Very good! The answer is SER.

3. ) 1+0.1+0.001+0.0001 You’re right! The answer is SER.
1 2 3 4
4. ) , , , , . .. Correct! The answer is SEQ.
2 3 4 5
5. ) 5−4+ 8−1+2 Excellent! The answer is SER.

Now, let’s have Independent Practice Activity.

Directions: Identify if the given item is a finite sequence, finite series, infinite
sequence or infinite series.

1. ) 2, 4, 6, 8 Answer: Finite Sequence

Now, you will answer the remaining tasks.

(READ THE ITEM TWICE)
2. ) 1, 5, 6, 11, . . . Correct! The answer is Infinite Sequence.
3. ) 1+2+4+8+16 Very good! The answer is Finite Series.
4. ) -10-2+6+ . . . You’re right! The answer is Infinite Series.
5. ) √ 3 , √ 4 , √5 , √ 6 Excellent! The answer is Finite Sequence.

Extro - Great job for doing well in your activites.

- I hope you learn something with our lesson today.
- Remember that a sequence is a list of numbers or objects which have
been arranged in a sequential way. A series can be highly generalized
as the sum of all the terms in a sequence.
- Continue doing the remaining activities in your GIYA for more fun math
learning.
- This is Teacher Pede Casing, your teacher on air saying….
- Everything you need comes to you in perfect time, space and
sequence.
