Procedure

General start-up

i. Main switch was turned on after the main supply.

ii. Valves were opened in order to remove any air inside the both chambers and were
closed back to ensure that the chambers were under atmospheric pressure.
iii. The hose from the compressor was connected into the chamber that we want to
pressurize it.
iv. The unit was ready to be used.

Experiment 1: Boyle’s Law

i. The general start-up procedure was performed. The valves were ensured to
completely closed.
ii. The compressor was turned on and wait until the pressure reading reach 150 kPa
before the compressor was turned off again.
iii. The compressive pump hose was removed from the pressurized chamber and the
pressure reading was waited for it to stabilize. The reading may be slightly above
150kPa.
iv. Reading from the pressure panel for both chambers were recorded and second valve
was opened in order to let air from pressurized chamber to enter the vacuum chamber.
v. The reading from the pressure panel for both chambers were recorded again after the
reading had stabilized for the after expansion.
vi. PV value were calculated based on the readings obtained.

Experiment 2: Gay Lussac’s Law

i. The general start-up procedure was performed. The valves were ensured to
completely closed.
ii. The vacuum hose was connected to the vacuum chamber while compressor hose was
connected to the vacuum chamber.
iii. The compressive pump was switched on and the temperature for every addition of
10kPa inside the chamber were recorded until the compressive pump was turned off
when pressure had reached 160kPa.
iv. The first valve was opened in order to let the air flow out from the chamber.
v. The temperature reading for every decrement of 10kPa were recorded.
vi. The experiments were repeated three times to obtain the average value.
vii. Graph of pressure versus temperature were plotted based on the reading obtained.

Experiment 3: Determination of ratio heat capacity

i. The general start-up procedure was performed. The valves were ensured to
completely closed.
ii. The compressive pump hose was connected to the pressurized chamber.
iii. Step (ii) to (iii) from the Boyle’s Law experiment were repeated.
iv. The PT1 and T1 readings inside the chamber were recorded after the readings had
stabilized.
v. The first valve was opened and was closed after a few seconds and both PT1 and T1
readings were recorded after the readings had stabilized.
vi. The ratio of the heat capacity was determined and compared with the theoretical
value.
