Hello everyone. Today, I will lecture on the Atonement.

I will first read from Hebrews chapter 5 verse 1. It’s Hebrews chapter 5 verse 1, “For every
high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he
may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins: Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and
on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity. And by
reason hereof he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins. And no man
taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron. So also Christ
glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son,
to day have I begotten thee.”

Up until the last lecture, we looked into the ministry of Jesus Christ – Jesus the prophet,
Jesus who did the work of a priest by coming to this world as a high priest, and Jesus who
did the work of a king. We talked about these three ministries of Jesus Christ. There is a path
of salvation that God gave us. During this time, we will look into the parts on the
atonement.First, I would like to lecture on the atonement that happened on the cross. There
is something that happened on the cross. We will look into what exactly happened on the
cross during this time and also look into the various things that take what happened on the
cross the wrong way.

The only way for man to make peace with God is the Lord. That is why there is no other way
than Jesus Christ the Savior to reconcile and make peace with God. There is no other way
than Jesus Christ to reconcile with God. We read Hebrews chapter 5 from verse 1 through 5
today. It says here that Jesus had to do two things as a priest. There are two functions a
priest has. One of them is offering gifts and sacrifices. One of the two functions of a priest is
offering gifts and sacrifices. The second is the role of an advocate. As Jesus came to this
world as a priest and did the work of a priest, he did the work of offering gifts and sacrifices,
and the other was the role of an advocate. Thus, all the works of the priests in the Old
Testament indicate our Jesus Christ.

As we look into each of the things that happened on the cross, quite a few parts in the New
Testament are devoted to the incident of Jesus dying on the cross and they are directly
mentioned through the Word. The incident of Jesus Christ dying on the cross in the New
Testament is such a wonderful incident. How many times do you think these parts are
directly mentioned in the Bible? The incident of Jesus Christ dying on the cross is directly
mentioned in the Bible around 175 times. It’s mentioned a lot, right? But, indirectly, the
death of Jesus Christ is spoken more of in the Bible. What this is telling us is that the death
of Jesus Christ on the cross is the most important thing in the Bible. That is why a great
portion of the Bible deals with the death of Jesus on the cross. So, let’s look in John chapter
21. In John chapter 21 verse 25, the last verse, “And there are also many other things which
Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself
could not contain the books that should be written.” This is saying that Jesus Christ did many
works in the world. If all of those works were written down, the world itself can’t contain the
books that have those things written down. That is how much Jesus worked for us and the
Four Gospels recorded his many works.

The records of the Four Gospels are short. All the works done by Jesus Christ can’t be
recorded, so the short records that were made were dealt with like a sampler. Therefore, we
can see how God showed the importance of the death of Jesus Christ through this amount
alone. For example, if you look at Matthew, Mark, and the rest of the Four Gospels, almost a
third covers the death of Jesus Christ, the death on the cross. In the Four Gospels of
Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, a third is devoted and speaking of the Lord’s death. What
does God want to teach us through this? He wants to teach that the death of Jesus Christ on
the cross is the most important thing. Of course, the part on incarnation is also very
important, and the life and teachings of Jesus are important as well, but the most important
part of all is the death of Jesus on the cross. His death is the most important.

The death of Jesus on the cross was described in various ways. Why don’t we take a look in
1Corinthians? 1Corinthians chapter 1 verse 23, “But we preach Christ crucified, unto the
Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; But unto them which are called,
both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.” Paul is saying here
that the death of Jesus Christ on the cross is a stumblingblock to the Jews. That’s what this
incident is to them. To the Greeks, the Gentiles, it’s foolishness. Why did he describe it like
that? This gospel, the death of Jesus Christ on the cross, which is the most important, was a
stumblingblock to the Jews and foolishness to the Greeks.Satan makes the gospel of the
death on the cross foolishness in the hearts of man and a stumblingblock to the Jews.
However, Paul said, “But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the
power of God, and the wisdom of God.”

If you look in Acts, why don’t we look in Acts? In chapter 17 verse 3, Paul said, in Acts
chapter 17 verse 3, “Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen
again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.” Paul would
always enter the Jewish synagogues and preach the gospel. Wherever Paul went, if I have to
summarize what he preached, I can categorize it into two parts. One is that “Christ must
needs have suffered”. The suffering he went through was dying on the cross. The other is
that Jesus is Christ. This is what Paul preached. Wherever he went, he always preached,
“Jesus has to suffer. Christ will receive suffering. He will die on the cross. Jesus is Christ.”This
was a great stumblingblock to the Jews because the Jews don’t give recognition to Jesus.
They were waiting for the Messiah and the Messiah came. This was a stumblingblock to
them. However, this was foolishness to the Greeks. They thought of the death and
resurrection of Jesus Christ as foolishness.

Why don’t we also look in 1Corinthians to continue looking into these things? It’s
1Corinthains chapter 2 verse 2, “For I determined not to know any thing among you, save
Jesus Christ, and him crucified.”If we take a look in 1Corinthians, Paul said, “For I determined
not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.”Paul was a great
gospel preacher, but wherever he went and preached, he spoke of the death of Jesus Christ
on the cross. He spoke of the crucifixion of Jesus and that Jesus is Christ. Thus, he said, “For I
am determined not to know any thing, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.”As a gospel
preacher, Paul always said, “Jesus is Christ.”He said that and the other thing he said was,
“This Christ was crucified.”He constantly testified of that incident. Why don’t we look for
something else? It’s 1Corinthians chapter 15, chapter 15 verse 3, “For I delivered unto you
first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the
scriptures.”If you look in 1Corinthians chapter 15 verse 3, it also says “according to the
scriptures”. “Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures.”So, in all aspects, when Paul
testified, first, the death of Jesus Christ was in that testimony, and second, Christ is Jesus
Christ. These two things were always testified.

Not only Paul, but let’s also look in 1Peter. In 1Peter, the Lord’s disciple, the apostle Peter,
also spoke. It’s 1Peter chapter 1 verses 18 and 19, “Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not
redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received
by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without
blemish and without spot.”It’s the precious blood of Christ; the atonement. If you look in the
Bible, gospel preachers always talked of the death of Jesus, the precious blood, and the
atonement. We will now look in 1John. Why don’t we look in 1John chapter 2 verse 20? In
1John chapter 2 verse 20, chapter 2 verse 20, “But ye have an unction from the Holy One,
and ye know all things. I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but
because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.”Verse 22, “Who is a liar but he that
denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, thatdenieth the Father and the Son.
Whosoeverdenieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: he that acknowledgeth the Son
hath the Father also.”It said that denying Jesus is the Christ is a liar and antichrist. The
apostle John said that denying Jesus Christ is “Jesus Christ and the Son of God” is an
antichrist and a liar. That is why God gives a lot of weight to the death on the cross and it’s
covered with great importance. This also comes in Revelation, so why don’t we look at that
as well? It’s Revelation chapter 7, Revelation chapter 7 verse 14, “And I said unto him, Sir,
thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and
have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.”The blood of the
Lamb is speaking of Jesus Christ. “Have washed their robes, and made them white in the
blood of the Lamb.”Will the robes become white because it was washed in the blood? It
becomes red. However, the Bible is saying that the blood of Jesus washed our sins as white
as snow.

One of the things that we are going to cover is what exactly happened on the cross of Jesus?
What happened on the cross? What is the significance of the Lord’s death on the cross? Now
we will cover the specifics concerning these things. There is a reason why this is important. If
you look in Colossians, many people have been deceived that the truth of God is powerless.
Let’s look in Colossians chapter 2 verse 8. It’s Colossians chapter 2 verse 8, “Beware lest any
man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the
rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.”It says, “Beware lest any man spoil you through
philosophy and vain deceit.”It means there are many people who make the cross of none
effect through philosophy and vain deceit. Following the rudiments of the world, there were
many philosophies and vain deceit during that time that deny Christ and prevent Jesus from
being believed. It’s the same even now.

Before we cover what is the precise significance of the cross and what is the true significance
of the Lord’s death, we will briefly look into the wrong concepts concerning the cross. One of
the wrong concepts concerning the cross is that certain people say, “The cross is just one of
many tragedies” or “an accident”. “This is a tragedy and an accident just happened.”There
are also wrong misconceptions and notions concerning the cross that are being taught such
as “Jesus saying, ‘It is finished’ means ‘it’s the end’ or ‘it’s over’” or “The Lord failed. That is
why a countermeasure was brought up”. Even in Korea, there’s a well-known religion that
people know by name. They say, “Jesus failed. That is why I came to resolve this. Why? It’s
because Jesus died on the cross. That was a failure.”This is misunderstanding the cross and
not really knowing what it is. The cross of Jesus was neither a tragedy nor an accident. It
wasn’t a failure either. It was all finished according to the scriptures.

If we look at another thing in the Bible in Matthew chapter 16, it talks about what will
happen to Jesus on the cross. It’s clear that it wasn’t some tragedy that suddenly happened
or some accident. Let’s look in Matthew chapter 16. It’s Matthew chapter 16 verse 13. This is
a well-known verse. Matthew chapter 16 verse 13, “When Jesus came into the coasts of
Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man
am?” This is a question to us, right? “And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist:
some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. He saith unto them, But whom say
ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living
God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and
blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.” Next is verse 20,
“Then charged he his disciples that they should tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ.” If
you look here, not only did the Lord speak of his death on the cross, but also the
resurrection. If you read later on in the Bible, Peter makes a confession of faith in Matthew
chapter 16. After Peter’s confession of faith, the Lord speaks in detail of his death on the
cross and that starts from verse 21. That’s what it says, right? “From that time forth began
Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many
things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third
day.”Jesus didn’t go through some accident or tragedy, but Jesus already knew of his death.
He started to teach his disciples the death of the cross and the resurrection. The parts on the
death of Jesus on the cross were not coincidence. It wasn’t some man’s jealousy or accident.
This was clearly planned according to the will of God and Jesus Christ was crucified
according to that will.

Let’s turn a few pages in Matthew and look in chapter 20. There are things the Lord
personally spoke of. It’s Matthew chapter 20 verse 28, “Even as the Son of man came not to
be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.”Jesus came to this
world to give his life a ransom for many. A ransom, that is to say, the Lord knew about that.
He knew that his life would be given as a ransom for many people.

Next, if we also look in John, before we speak of the will of what happened on the cross, we
will be going over the wrong concepts during this lecture and the next lecture. Also in John
chapter 12, Jesus said these words. Let’s open to chapter 12. It’s chapter 12 verse 23, “And
Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.”In
verse 23, it says “the hour”. This “hour” means the hour to receive the glory has come. So,
the death of Jesus on the cross is the hour set by God for Jesus to die. That is why the Bible
covers this on many parts. The Bible is absolutely saying that the death of Jesus on the cross
was not an accident or a tragedy because it was recorded in the Bible and it was already
prophesied.

Next, if we take a detailed look in Luke, there is a word spoken by Jesus. Let’s open to Luke
chapter 9. It’s Luke chapter 9, chapter 9 verse 51, “And it came to pass, when the time was
come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem.”Jesus was
determined to go to Jerusalem. Why was he determined to go to Jerusalem? Jerusalem is
the place where Jesus dies. He knew because it was time for him to be received up at
Jerusalem. The clear thing is that Jesus knew of the death on the cross and he was
determined to go to Jerusalem. If we also look in Luke chapter 13, through the Bible, as the
clear words recorded in the Bible are held in our hearts, we are freed from the many ideas
and thoughts that are not the Word, and that Word protects our hearts. In Luke chapter 13
verse 33, “Nevertheless I must walk to day, and to morrow, and the day following: for it
cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem.”“For it cannot be that a prophet perish
out of Jerusalem.” Jesus precisely knew the hour of his death. “For it cannot be that a
prophet perish out of Jerusalem.” So, the extremely important significance for the death on
the cross is that Jesus already knew of his death and he also knew precisely that this Word is
fulfilled according to the will of God. Thus, it is saying that the death of Jesus on the cross
wasn’t coincidence, it wasn’t some tragedy, it was decided according to the will of God, and
Jesus clearly knew of this fact.

Last of all, we will read Hebrews chapter 2 again. It’s Hebrews chapter 2 verse 9, “But we see
Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with
glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.” Jesus knew
of his death and the reason for his death because through the cross, “That he by the grace
of God should taste death for every man.” It said, “That he should taste death,” right? It’s
because he receives suffering from every man through death. Jesus already knew the
wonderful work of saving man by being crowned with glory and honour. That is why he
tasted death for every man. Because the death of Jesus on the cross can save every man,
Jesus tasted death. As we looked through the words of the Bible one by one, we saw what
the significance of the incident of Jesus Christ dying on the cross was and how the Word
testified this.

What we will continue to cover in the next lecture is not the precise biblical significance on
the death of the cross, rather, there are many people that have a wrong understanding on
the death of Christ on the cross and misunderstandon things that are unbiblical. We all know
universally that Jesus died on the cross, but there are many people that don’t know how
clear and certain the death of the cross is. However, the Bible handled this precisely one by
one. The Bible covered a lot on the great importance for the death of Jesus on the cross. I
hope we will have the time to have the clear Word on this part to be established in our
hearts as we continue this lecture.

I will end the lecture. Goodbye.
