Chapter 1

PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Today the world’s greatest achievement is technology.

Technology is directly proportional to our imagination and possibilities.

If our greatest achievement is technology, then technology’s greatest

achievement is communication. Making the world a smaller place for

those who want to connect from great distances. Communication has

come in all shapes and sizes. It has greatly evolved as time goes by.

From letters to telegram to cellular phones. Today our greatest form of

communication is social media.

The explosive growth of Social Media has provided millions of

people the opportunity to create and share content on a scale barely

imaginable a few years ago. Massive participation in these social

networks is reflected in the countless number of opinions, news and

product reviews that are constantly posted and discussed in social site
HOLY CHILD ACADEMY 2

such as Facebook, Digg and Twitter, to name a few. Given this

widespread generation and consumption of content, it is natural to

target one’s messages to highly connected people who will propagate

them further in the social network. This is particularly the case in

Twitter, which is one of the fastest growing social networks on the

Internet, and thus the focus of advertising companies and celebrities

eager to exploit this vast new medium.

Social media has taken a large part of our daily lives. It has the

home of teenagers, probably the thing they can live. Waking up in the

morning the first thing we look for is our cellular phones. What app do

we open first? Of course, it maybe Facebook, instagram, twitter and

etc. some people lives are practically composed of using social media.

Using the comfort room we use our phone, while we eat, while we

commute and many more. Some people use it in a good purpose like

studying, research etc. The main reason of having it is too able to learn

new things. New things that can help you to your living. With the use of
HOLY CHILD ACADEMY 3

social media the Grade 10 – Excellence students of Holy Child

Academy- London Drive can learn many words that you can’t find in

the dictionary.

By using social media, we can learn a lot of things that we can

use in our studies. Researching is one of the most important uses of

social media to our studies but social media can also be the most

addictive hindrance to our studies.

Our study will focus on the positive and negative influence of

social media to the academic performance of Grade – 10 Excellence

(Holy Child Academy- London Drive). This study will concentrate in

giving information to the students about social media and the effect of

it to the students.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

In this chapter, readings and findings of some studies are both

foreign and local that have implications on this study are presented in

this chapter.

LITERATURE

This chapter includes the review of related literature and studies

that conducted in the Philippines and foreign.

FOREIGN LITERATURE

Berlin (2018) although many parents may be worried that the

rise of social media is distracting children from their studies, new

European research suggests that using sites such as Snapchat,

15

Facebook, or Instagram has a minimal effect on academic

performance. Carried out by researchers from the University of

Bamberg, Germany, the new study set out to clarify whether social

media does in fact have a negative impact on school grades, looking at

59 studies that included more than 30,000 young people worldwide.

“There are several contradictory single studies on this subject and this

has made it difficult previously to properly assess all results,” explained

co-author Caroline Marker says. Although some studies report that

social media has a negative impact on school performance, others

show a positive influence, while some have failed to find any

relationship at all. In the new review the team found that as they had

expected, students who used social media intensively to communicate

to their peers about school-related topics actually tended to have

slightly higher, not lower grades. In addition, they found that those who

were particularly active on social media did not spend less time

studying. However, those who used social networking sites very

frequently, regularly post messages and photos, did have slightly lower

grades, although the team stressed that the negative effect is very
16

small. Those who used social media while studying or doing homework

grades, although the team stressed that the negative effect is very

small. Those who used social media while studying or doing homework

also had slightly worse grades than students who didn’t use the sites,

possibly because this form of multi-tasking distracted students from

their work. Commenting on whether social media could be causing the

slight decrease in grades, or whether students who already have lower

grades are more easily drawn to the distraction of social media, co-

author Professor Markus Appel commented that, “We cannot answer

this question. Both directions of cause and effect are possible, but they

are not very pronounced.”

Abir S. Al-Harrasi (2014)the use of social networking by college

students has become increasingly relevant to their academic lives.

Smartphones have added great potential by enabling an increase in

the use of social networking and in the number of hours spent on such

sites.Being online for a long time and being able to access different

information from different sources at the same time could cause

information overload. Students could face problems in filtering the

information they receive and they might find it difficult to decide which

sources they can trust and, therefore, which to select.

The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of social

networking on college students. To achieve this aim, the research

employs various methodologies which include descriptive/interpretive

studies of the literature and previous studies carried out by academics

and industrial institutions. It also utilizes surveys taken among

university students. A questionnaire was distributed among 179

students at different universities and higher education institutes in the

Sultanate of Oman in order to explore the influence on college

students of social networking using their smartphones. There are three

main findings: college students spend a long time on social networking

sites, college students are facing problems in trusting, filtering, and

selecting all the different information accessed from social networking

sites, and social networks affect students in both positive and negative

ways. The younger generation discussed in this research paper are

school students between the ages of 12 to 19 years old. A few of the

platforms they use are Facebook, YouTube, Google, and many others

that will be discussed in the findings of this research. The younger

generations are the individuals that will lead our world in the future,

they must be well educated to be able to impact this world and make

Egypt a better country on the road to success. Therefore, research

must be conducted about the different things they are exposed to, that

may affect them negatively or positively. This research aims to assess

the frequency at which the students are social networking, and whether

it has any effect on their academic performance. If there is an impact

on their academic performance, in what way does it affect it? All these

questions will be answered through this research paper. This research

aims at measuring the impact of social media on the younger

generation’s academic performance; therefore, this paper is structured

in the following order: the literature review outlining previous research

conducted on university students and high-school students outside of

Egypt. Following with the research methodology and the results

obtained from the distribution of the questionnaires; followed by the

HOLY CHILD ACADEMY 19

discussion that will answer the suggested hypotheses of the paper.

The final part will be the conclusion and the limitations of this study.

According to Abir S. Al-Harrasi and Ali H. Al-Badi (2014) the use

of social networking by college students has become increasingly

relevant to their academic lives. Smartphones have added great

potential by enabling an increase in the use of social networking and in

the number of hours spent on such sites. Being online for a long time

and being able to access different information from different sources at

the same time could cause information overload. Students could face

problems in filtering the information they receive and they might find it

difficult to decide which sources they can trust and, therefore, which to

select. The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of social

networking on college students. To achieve this aim, the research

employs various methodologies which include descriptive/interpretive

studies of the literature and previous studies carried out by academics

and industrial institutions. It also utilizes surveys taken among

students at different universities and higher education institutes in the

Sultanate of Oman in order to explore the influence on college

students of social networking using their smartphones. There are three

main findings: 1) college students spend a long time on social

networking sites, 2) college students are facing problems in trusting,

filtering, and selecting all the different information accessed from social

networking sites, and 3) social networks affect students in both positive

and negative ways.

According to Murad Ali (2017) one of the authors Technology

strengthens learning and dominates over the conventional methods in

too many aspects. Technologies are advancing learning procedure by

their multiple formats, variety of resources, numerous delivery

channels and not restricted to time space and place. Social media is a

new form of communication that transformed the entire landscape of

information access and dissemination online. This platform consists of

a range of communication channels, considerably popular among

students and assists them in various types of communication and

collaborative learning. However, the platform of social media can also

.

HOLY CHILD ACADEMY 21

• London Drive • Kingspoint •North Fairview • St. Francisville • Marilao

be considered as a source of distractions and divert student’s attention

from learning and academic achievements. The principal objective of

the current study is to understand the recent trends of social media

use, the phenomenon of distractions and factors out convincing

students for the academic use of social media. Interviews administered

to enquire the phenomenon and analyzed with the help of ATLAS-Ti-7

and MS Excel. It is concluded from the results that individual

psychological characteristics, social influences, information quality and

system usefulness are the leading factors. Furthermore, the survey

established the importance of this platform for academic purposes and

perception concerning the phenomenon of distraction. In addition,

future research directions and study limitations are discussed.

FOREIGN STUDIES

Dr. Ismail Nizam (2016) According to the outcome, students’

academic performance is affected the more they use Facebook. Social

platforms are mainly used by students for socializing activities rather

than academic purpose. In addition said that majority of students feel

that social platforms have positive impact on academic growth. In a

different research conducted by Shana it was ascertain that students

use platforms mainly for chatting and making friends. ‘’The

consequences of internet and social platforms on students’ academic

growth’’ a study than by Young it was seen that internet has spread its

wings to reach teenager’s school life. It was also observed by Young

that students are more dependent on internet to access info that

pertain their academic life as well as entertainment. Additionally,

Young said that internet, though take a lot of time, and have less

impact on studies. It was observed by Wang that impact of social

platforms rest on the degree of usage. Jeong observed that

internet addiction is significantly and negatively related to students’

academic growth, as well as emotional attributes. Seo confirms Jeong

statement when he opined that the negative influence of internet is

only on excessive users and not on all users .Rather avers that: the

social platforms which are being used today with great desire and

enthusiasm have altered the way of using internets in this modern age

by defining online tools and utilities which allow users for

communication, participation and collaboration of information online.

Today’s young generation, especially teens and youth are using

technology through innovative ways due to which they are referred to

as millennial and have changed the way they think, work and

communicate even though they are in formative years of their life.

Today’s youth because of social platforms have become technology

addicts and are quite withdrawn. The use of social media among

students has reached high levels and has affected their study time,

poor grammar and wrong spellings when socializing on social media

as well as diverting their attention from their studies. Students spend

much of their study time on social networks than in their academic

undertakings and it has affected their Grade Point Average.

Investigation on impact of social media was done here in Malaysia

which focused on student’s academic performance in tertiary institution

just a few research has been done so far in the tertiary institution

pertaining this topic and the researcher’s respondent were information

technology students.

Hira Hasnain (2015) one of the authors says that several

research studies have been conducted across the world examining the

effect of social media on the academic performances of students. Up

to our knowledge, only a handful of studies have been conducted in

Pakistan on this issue. Previous researches were mostly based on one

social networking site such as Facebook. A research was done by

Madge, Meek, Wellens and Hooley based on the universities in the

U.K. The study showed negative relationship between Facebook and

the academic performance of students. However, the study didn’t focus

on which students were using Facebook and what time of the day they

used it the most. Moreover, the sample used for the study was

homogenous thereby restricting their research findings.

HOLY CHILD ACADEMY 25

• London Drive • Kingspoint •North Fairview • St. Francisville • Marilao

Another research by Asdaque, Khan and Rizvi was conducted

on 100 undergraduate students of two federal universities in Pakistan.

The research focused on the use of internet and its effects on

academic performance. The results suggested a negative relationship.

However, the study was carried out in the same cultural environment

and within the same city; therefore it did not identify which social

networking sites were being used. Moreover, it did not highlight at what

time of the day it was being used the most which resulted in poor

academic performance among students. Further work on this area

comprises of a study conducted by Bashir, Mahmood and Shafique at

one of the university in Pakistan which focused on the internet usage

by undergraduates, graduates and post graduate students. The study

analyzed a sample of 300 users and the analysis assessed the

relationship of internet with experience, frequency and places of 2nd

internet usage. The results suggested a positive relationship among

students and internet usage, and 63 percent of the total students

mentioned that they used internet regarding academic related work

HOLY CHILD ACADEMY 26

• London Drive • Kingspoint •North Fairview • St. Francisville • Marilao

only. Nevertheless, this study only focused on internet usage rather

than specific impact of social media on academic performance.

Majority of these studies were carried out at least 5 years ago. As the

time passed, the use of social media has increased. Therefore, more

extensive study is required to critically analyze this situation.

LOCAL LITERATURE

Rejie D. Astodello (2016)says people all over the world have

been enjoying the benefits of using technology nowadays.  In the past,

communicating and free sharing of thought between people are

restricted by long distance, race, and even religion.  But now these

barriers can no longer stop the flow of information and knowledge

because now the new world of social networking allows free sharing of

thoughts through online social networking sites such as Facebook,

Instagram, Twitter, and the like. Since students are highly motivated to
HOLY CHILD ACADEMY 27

• London Drive • Kingspoint •North Fairview • St. Francisville • Marilao

using social media sites the majority of them use these to satisfy

their social needs more than their academic needs.

They have the new friends and comment on other people’s

lives, and they can even create other online freedom to do whatever

they want – they can upload or download data, they can make

identities the real world does not allow.  It has been observed too that

the majority of the students nowadays, particularly those in the

secondary level, spend most of their time chatting with their

acquaintances, playing online games, and watching videos instead of

reading their lessons, making their assignments, and other academic

requirements. The main reason is when they work or search their

materials online they get attracted to social networking sites to kill

boredom during study time, diverting their attention from their work.

The darker side of this that has gained the attention of many parents is

that some students are getting lazier and are no longer interested in

going to school.  This is probably due to being extensively indulged to

28

get globe access and therefore leading them to perform less

academically.

I have observed from my Grades 7 and 8 students at the Tabuk

City National High School the same positive and negative impact of

using social media inside and outside the classroom.  I found these

social sites helpful when one time I needed to communicate with my

students, reminding them of their assignments and urgent

requirements.  In addition, l also used these social sites to refer my

students to helpful resources that could fetch those higher grades in

academics.  I tried to encourage the students, particularly the teens with

gadgets having internet facilities, to use it to supplement their researches in

the library rather than the usual chatting with friends all the time.
29
Alexander S. Gudia (2017)According to the Merriam-Webster,

social media are forms of electronic communications through which

users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal

HOLY CHILD ACADEMY

• London Drive • Kingspoint •North Fairview • St. Francisville • Marilao

messages and other content such as videos. The students become

victims of social networks more often than anyone else. This is

because when they are studying or searching their course material

online, they get attracted to these sites to kill the boredom on their

study time diverting their attention from their work and they are more

likely to drink and use drug. At present, whether social media is

favorable or unfavorable, many students utilize these sites on a daily

basis. As social media sites continue to grow in popularity it is our

belief that technology is a vital part of today’s students’ success

equation (Wang, Chen & Liang, 2011).  Many researchers have been

looking into a considerable amount of research on how social media

influences student academic performances at colleges. Many parents

are worried that their children are

spending too much time on Facebook and other social media sites and

not enough time studying.

Mike Moran, Jeff Seaman and Hester Tinti-Kane, for a long

period of time believed that the term social media does not have a

clear definition, however, when one platform emerged, that gave

people an opportunity to be content creators, controllers and

transparent users, to a great extent. Once this content is shared, it

becomes a conversation, because all users who have accounts on

social media platforms can interact with all posts (Moran, Seaman and

Tinti-Kane, 2011). Social Networking is “the act of engagement,” while

social media is the tool used to communicate with mass audience

(Hartshorn, 2010). Social Media is the platform that give individuals the

opportunity to interact, using two way communication; meaning, that

anyone who has online accounts can share their opinions with other

social media users. There are two types of social media users; digital

natives and digital immigrants. Digital natives are the ones who were

born after 1980, they came to this world when the digital media
existed. However, digital immigrants are the ones who were born
31
before 1980 and adapted their lives to digital media (AntonSon and

Christopher, 2014). Social media platforms vary from Web blogs, to

HOLY CHILD ACADEMY

• London Drive • Kingspoint •North Fairview • St. Francisville • Marilao

micro-sharing platforms, to lifestreams to social networks and much

more (AntonSon and Christopher, 2014). The younger generation

discussed in this research paper are school students between the ages

of 12 to 19 years old. A few of the platforms they use are Facebook,

YouTube, Google, and many others that will be discussed in the

findings of this research. The younger generations are the individuals

that will lead our world in the future, they must be well educated to be

able to impact this world and make Egypt a better country on the road

to success. Therefore, research must be conducted about the different

things they are exposed to, that may affect them negatively or

positively. This research aims to assess the frequency at which the

students are social networking, and whether it has any effect on their

academic performance. If there is an impact on their academic

performance, in what way does it affect it. All these questions will be
answered through this research paper. Social media has been utilized
32
in so many different ways throughout the years. Egypt is known to be

one of the heavy users of social media, specifically Facebook. It

dominates 25% of the total MENA region, having almost 11 million

HOLY CHILD ACADEMY

• London Drive • Kingspoint •North Fairview • St. Francisville • Marilao

users, even though the penetration rate is only about 13%. In the first

six months of the year 2012, Egypt had an additional 1,608,420 users

on Facebook, which is the highest number in the MENA region. Luke

Richards stated that 46% of Egyptian social media users believe that

social media has great influence in empowering them to change their

country (Richards, 2012).

According to Dr. Anthony Curtis, in 2014, there is about 1.28

billion Facebook users and 255 million Twitter users, 55 million of the

Facebook users and 3.7 million of the Twitter users are from the Arab

world (Curtis, 2013). This research aims at measuring the impact of

social media on the younger generation’s academic performance;

therefore, this paper is structured in the following order: the literature

suggested hypotheses of the paper. The final part will be the

LOCAL STUDIES

Dharel P. Acut (2016) one of the authors says that this study

was carried out to determine if the students’ academic performance is

affected by their Internet usage. The study was conducted among

three hundred eighty six (386) undergraduate students within

Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology. The

researchs framed a structured interview and a questionnaire yearning

to gather all the information needed. The data collected from the
respondents pointed out that there was no significant relationship
34
between the respondents’ academic performance and their Internet

usage. Findings of the study also reveal that there was no significant

relationship between the respondents’ academic performance and the

place where they have accessed the Internet. Another finding shows

HOLY CHILD ACADEMY

• London Drive • Kingspoint •North Fairview • St. Francisville • Marilao

that there was no significant relationship between the respondents’

academic performance and their purposes in using the Internet such

as for Gaming, Social Networking, News, and Entertainment. There

was, however, a significant relationship between the respondents’

academic performance and their usage of Internet for academic

purposes. From the results, the researchers recommend that

Educators may encourage students to use the Internet by giving them

assignments, projects, and online quizzes.

Jee Y. Geronimo (2015) The Internet may be a distraction to

many, but one study shows most Filipinos believe that increasing

usage actually has good influence on education. The Philippines a

phenomenal technological evolution in the world of Web applications.
35
These sites are widely used throughout the world connecting millions

of people simultaneously. The study of Ahmed et al. (2011) found that

the first official Social Networking Site is Classmates.com that was

founded in 1995. The purpose of its creation was to provide the

HOLY CHILD ACADEMY

• London Drive • Kingspoint •North Fairview • St. Francisville • Marilao

students a means of social connection during or after their degree

completion.

The study of Jabr (2011) found that SNSs are making a

tremendous effect nearly in every aspect of life. In fact, it had shifted

as a tool for extending academic learning and communication. SNSs

are web-based application that allow individuals to create profile and

share information with friends within the system. This “SNSs

phenomenon” had permeated on the students and became the latest

online avenue for social interactions, as well as academic interaction.

Every technological innovation has been a center of research attention

and same is the case with the development and evolution of Social
Networking Sites. Some noted researchers have conducted studies to
36
find the several impacts of SNSs on their users, and they have arrived

at mixed conclusions. For example, the study of Suhail and Bargees

(2006) found that excessive usage of Social Networking Sites causes

many psychological, physical, interpersonal, and educational problems

to users. A number of studies have also been conducted to delineate

HOLY CHILD ACADEMY

• London Drive • Kingspoint •North Fairview • St. Francisville • Marilao

the impact of Social Networking Sites on young generation and

students.

Ellison (2007) proposed that young people compete on the

basis of their efficiency regarding the use of Social Networking Sites

and the criterion of this competition is the number of friends one can

accumulate using these sites. As shown in the study of Choney (2010)

due to the increased popularity of SNSs, economists and professors

are questioning whether grades of students are being affected by how

much time is being spent on these sites. Essentially, the environment

and other factors may affect the way a student views learning and

studying. Truly SNSs are one of the factors that can affect student’s
time, insight, and outlook about learning and studying. With the
37
prevalence of SNSs, the study of Karpinski and Kirschner (2010)

validated that students’ study time and their academic performance

could be affected.

HOLY CHILD ACADEMY

• London Drive • Kingspoint •North Fairview • St. Francisville • Marilao

Moreover, the study of Karpinski (2009) shows that users who

spend more time on SNSs like Facebook spend less time in studying.

Hence, school authorities are one of the primary people who oppose

it’s use particularly in schools, which is the reason why they usually

ban it during class hours. The teachers and administrators are likewise

affected because of this negative implications. Many schools have

opted for strict restrictions on SNSs usage in campuses amid concerns

about safety, privacy and confidentiality, and lack of knowledge about

how best to ensure it’s appropriate use.

The study of Lewis et al. (2008) found out that the influence of
38
these SNSs continues to get increasingly more pervasive, making

actual and virtual realities almost indistinguishable. Students are

talking about the social networking related stuffs almost every single

day; thus it would be a surprise if any student never got involved with

Facebook, Twitter or any other SNSs nowadays. Moreover, students

HOLY CHILD ACADEMY

• London Drive • Kingspoint •North Fairview • St. Francisville • Marilao

are paying more attention towards these social networking activities

rather than utilizing their time to study which will surely affect their

academic performance.

The research of Karpinski (2009) found that SNSs specifically

Facebook usage is negatively correlated with Grade Point Averages

(GPAs) of its users. She observed that the GPAs of non-users is

relatively higher than the users of these sites. Also, the study found

that 68 percent of students who used Facebook had a significant lower

GPA than those who did not use the SNSs. But the most interesting
finding was that 79 percent of Facebook users denied having any
39
adverse impact of this usage on their GPAs. It means that they are not

aware of the fact that networking habits affects their academic

performance.

Hence, their academic performance must be managed

efficiently without losing sight of all the factors that can positively or

HOLY CHILD ACADEMY

• London Drive • Kingspoint •North Fairview • St. Francisville • Marilao

negatively affect their educational performance. For instance,

Facebook has a phenomenal impact in the amount of influence and

increasingly has a large percentage of users in schools. A study

conducted by Quant Cast (2007) found out that 46 percent of SNSs

users like Facebook are 18-34 years of age, which actually permeate

to current students, prospective graduate students, and young alumni.

On the other hand, 27 percent are within the range of 12-17 years old,

which belong to undergraduates. With the above discussion, the

researcher strongly argues that it is very important for teachers and to

Lyceum of the Philippines University– Laguna (LPU-L), to study the

study the effects of SNSs in students’ academic performance.
40
Academic institutions could initiate programs and formulate learning

objectives that would help manage and organize learning on how

student could maximize study time in connection with SNSs usage.

This study was conducted to assess the level of student

involvement in SNSs usage, and determine the positive and negative

effects of these SNSs in student academic performance. The

descriptive results of the study would then lead to using SNSs as an

excellent tool in enhancing student academic performance and not a

hindrance in academic learning.

RELEVANCE OF THE REVIEWED LITERATURE AND STUDIES TO

THE PRESENT STUDY

All of the information taken from the related literature and
46
studies both foreign and local is relevant to the present study, in the

sense that they are all about the effects of slangs to the students. It

can help us to have an impression about the significant features of the

matter; know the data sources that other researchers have used;

distinguish the connection between thoughts and other information;

consider opinions for further consideration; resolve how you can avoid

yourself from repeating any errors that have been recognized in

previous work; create our own reading, critiquing strategy and

commenting cleverly to the positive and negative Influence of Social

Media to the Academic Performance of Grade 10 – Excellence Batch

2017-2018 of Holy Child Academy- London Drive.

Paul Kerswill (2010) professor of Sociolinguistics at Lancaster

University is studying street language in London. He says an entirely

new dialect is emerging.

"Young people are growing up with a new form of composite language.
47
It's a bit cockney, a bit West Indian, a bit West African, with some

Bangladeshi and Kuwaiti - and it seems to be replacing traditional

cockney."

This "multicultural English" is now the ordinary way of speaking

for many young people, he says. Instead of just using it to be cool or to

fit in with peers, they use it when they speak to everyone.

And those who use it are losing any sense of "appropriacy" - the

important skill of turning it on and off in different situations.

Actress Emma Thompson says young people make themselves

sound stupid by speaking slang outside of school. But while the use of

HOLY CHILD ACADEMY

• London Drive • Kingspoint •North Fairview • St. Francisville • Marilao

the word "like" might annoy her, it fulfils a useful role in

everyday speech.

"That's, like, so unfair."

One response to Emma Thompson's comments likely to trigger 48

a rush of steam from her ears.

The Oscar winner has spoken out against the use of sloppy

language. She says people who speak improperly make her feel

"insane" and she criticises teenagers for using words such as "like"

and "innit".Language experts are more understanding of teen culture

than Thompson, pointing out the word's many uses. It is the

unconventional uses that are probably getting the actress hot under

the collar.

RESEARCH DESIGN
The study employed the descriptive method of research.
50
Descriptive research is an approach which is appropriate whenever the

object of any class varies among themselves and one is interested in

knowing the extent to which different conditions obtain among these

objects. According to Manuel and Mendel (2013), Descriptive research

involves the description, recording, analysis, and interpretation of the

present nature, composition, or process of phenomena. According to

Travers and Rosales (2010), descriptive method aims to describe the

nature of the situation as it exists at the time of the study and to

explore causes of the particular phenomenon.

In this study, the researchers gathered information and data

about the history of positive and negative influence of social media and

how it affects the academic performance of the students in the Grade

10 – Excellence Batch 2017-2018.

RESPONDENTS
51
The respondents of the survey questionnaire were Twenty-

Six (26) Grade 10 – Excellence students Batch 2017-2018 of Holy

Child Academy- London Drive.

SAMPLING TECHNIQUE

The research made use of the purposive sampling technique.

Calmorin (2000) defined purposive sampling technique as based on

choosing individuals as samples according to the purpose of the

researcher.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT
52
In order to get significant data needed for the study, the

researchers utilized survey questionnaire as the major instrument.

After a comprehensive review of related literature, the researchers

came up with their own set of questionnaire.

The survey questionnaire has two parts: the first part aims to

identify the demographic profile of the respondents and the second

part aims to elicit responses aligned to the purpose of the study. These

are based from the researches and studies of Teale.

VALIDATION

After careful examination and construction of the questionnaire,

it was submitted to experts for face validation. The experts included a

statistician and an expert in the field of Mathematics and English.

STATISTICAL TREATMENT OF DATA

In the research, the following statistical treatment was employed
54
in the analysis of the gathered data from the respondents:

1. Frequency and Percentage Distribution

Frequency Count- this was used to find out how many

respondents have answered each item.

Percentage- is a descriptive statistical method when a

part is compared with the other parts of the whole. The formula used

for computing percentage is:

% = f/N x 100

Where:

% = Percentage of distribution

F = Frequency response

N = Total number of respondent

2. Ranking - this was used to rank the frequency of the items,

such as 1, 2 ,3, 4, 5 etc.
