Introduction
Air-conditioning system have been used in many parts of the world. The application of
air conditioning can be considered in many aspects of the industry today. May it be inside
someone's home, within a commercial establishment, or inside a plant facility with delicate
substances that is needed to be maintained at a certain temperature. Truly, the study of air
conditioning is essential for one who aim's to be a successful mechanical engineering. Many
experts can teach us on the introductory of the basic fundamentals of air conditioning, but
according to the Oxfords Dictionary, air conditioning is considered to be a system for
controlling the humidity, ventilation, and temperature in a building or vehicle, typically to
maintain a cool atmosphere in warm conditions. Within this definition, we can conclude that air
conditioning is a process in which the atmospheric temperature of a certain limited space is
manipulated in achieving the desired temperature for the give purpose of what is needed.
Different requirement can be considered in many aspects when it comes to air conditioning.
But in all this, how can we relate this with the application of theories and studies to the comfort
of people, especially in function halls or meeting rooms.
With an in-depth study and calculations to be considered, this study is aimed to create an
efficient air conditioning design in the 300 m 2 Multi-purpose hall. A split-type air conditioning
system is chosen to be used in the said facility.

In this chapter includes the ideas, relevant theories, related literatures and studies conceptual
and/or frame work and definition of terms. Those that were included in this chapter help in
familiarizing information that are relevant and similar to the present study.

Relevant Theories
First we need to understand the fundamentals of heat. The amount of heat energy present in
the air and refrigerant is measured as the temperature. There are two different temperature
scales most commonly used, Fahrenheit and Celsius.
I. Sensible Heat: When the heat that is applied to a substance merely raises its
temperature, but does not change its physical state. It is the heat which, added to or
subtracted from a substance, produces the changes in temperature indicated on
thermometer. (i.e. It is the heat that you feel or sense)
II. Latent Heat: The heat released or absorbed by a substance when it changes its
physical state to another with no change in temperature. (i.e. ice to liquid and liquid to
vapor)

There are two forms of latent heat:

o latent heat of fusion in the conversion of a liquid to a solid, or vice versa (i.e. The
Freezing Point - For water it is 32°F or 0°C).
o Latent heat of vaporization in the conversion of a liquid to a vapor, or vice versa.
(i.e. The Boiling Point - For water it is 212°F or 100°C). The latent heat of
vaporization phenomenon is the founding principle in refrigeration and air
conditioning. It is known as THE COOLING EFFECT!

Air Flow Characteristics in Air-Conditioned Multipurpose Hall

Air Flow Characteristics in Air-Conditioned Multipurpose Hall According to the researchers, this
paper focuses on both experimental investigation and numerical modeling of full-scale
modelled air-conditioned multipurpose hall fully operable. Two methodologies were used, firstly
full scale experimental setup was incorporated to map the hall making use of a welldeveloped
fully automated wireless mobile test rig remotely controlled by preprogrammed computer and
using high precision state-of-the-art measuring instruments. While the Second methodology
was a numerical modeling using a well-developed [CFD] 3DHVAC and Fluent computer
simulation programs Physical and Numerical investigations enable the analyses of the
influence of Reynolds, Archimedes and Prandtl numbers for the air as well as the effects of
shape, location, inlet air velocity of supply outlet on the flowing air parameters These
parameters include throw, drop, air induction, room local velocities, humidity ratio and
temperatures distributions.

LOCATING THE POTENTIAL SERVICES

According to the researchers a general list was compiled of educational and community
services likely to be needed in new residential sites, the initial point of departure being large
residential sites (1,000 or more dwelling unit). Inpreparing the list, care was taken to include a
variety of services:
1. Services for which the building could most likely be a permanent solution, and services which
could find in the building a solution of any kind - partial, temporary or even permanent.
2. Services which are likely to be required immediately on the new residentialSrte and services
which are likely lo be required there in the future (to examinethe possibilities of converting)
3. Services which could interact functionally and services separate from one another (to
examine the possibilities of combining). The list also included all the basic commercial
services, the assumption being that in certain residential sites, some sort of solution - even a
temporary one - might be required, for these services as well. They said that the Preliminary

classification of the services appearing in the list, excluding those in which the minimum area
of the building requiring them is especially large and deviates significantly from most of the
others in the list. Those services remaining therein had primary potential for being included in
the model.

ISSUES INVOLVED IN THE MODEL'S APPLICATION

Estimation of Requirements for Construction of The Multipurpose Building According to the
researchers of Israel, this is the estimation of the requirements entails careful study of the
physical characteristics of the site and the demographic characteristics of the population. They
want to point here, to some physical factors which are meaningful in determination of the
number of building as the site, their location, the planning of the services in each one of them
and the type of construction:
1. The site master plan and both the short-term and the long-term building plans for the public
buildings therein: This information impacts on the decisions as to whether the building
constitutes a temporary or a permanent solution to the services designated for it in the
immediate future, and where to situate it when taking into consideration its long-term purposes
2. The location of the site: The distance between it and the nearest population center, and the
mutual accessibility of the two. This factor has significance when determining which services
must be located on the site itself, and which can be got from the institutions already found in
the nearby population center (sbject to a potential increase in the scope of those services).
3. Available vacant buildings on the site: which can be converted for use with various services,
as temporary or permanent solution. The possibility of converting existing buildings could, in
certain circumstances, prove to be preferable to that of erecting a new complex.
4. The purpose of the site: Temporary or permanent residences. This factor has relevance in a
decision as to whether to plan the complex as a permanent structure or a temporary one. On a
site designated for temporary residences- it is reasonable to plan the complexes thereon as
temporary facilities, or alternatively, to consider the possibilities of utilizing it when the site
returns to being what it was originally intended.
5. The number of residential units on the site.

6. Distribution of the residential units over the site: The disposition is influenced by the size of
the site and the type of construction ground-hugging or saturated. This data must be taken into
account in any consideration of deployment of the complexes and the services each one will
house. For example, on a site having extensive distribution, it will be necessary to scatter the
complexes more widely and to determine the services in each of them according to its
accessibility to the target population.

The Basic Fundamentals of Air Conditioning

The basic processes of air conditioning can be exceptionally well represented in the h-x
diagram. A change of temperature at constant absolute humidity also always results in a
change of the relative humidity and enthalpy. The relative humidity and enthalpy also change
with a change of the absolute humidity at constant temperature. Thus, temperature and
relative humidity cannot be set independently of each other. An increase in the air temperature
(heating), for example, always also results in a reduction in the relative humidity. To keep the
relative humidity constant, humidification is therefore also required when heating. Conversely,
the relative humidity increases during cooling. The purpose of air conditioning is to create a
room climate comfortable for people. The conditions for describing comfort are standardized in
accordance with DIN 1946 and DIN EN 13779. While the temperature should be between 20
and 26°C, a relative humidity between 30 and 65 % is permitted. Air conditioning therefore
means to affect the room air in such a way that people are comfortable and their productivity is
not impeded. The condition of the air is characterized by temperature, pressure and humidity.
(Normally, the air pressure is not changed.

Methodology

This study used the spilt-type air conditioning system design for it is the simplest and most
recommended type of system with regards to the area of the hall. The experts said that using
this type of system can minimize the use of ducting and it could less the expenses in the
multipurpose hall.

Split type System

Based on the book of Split Systems from Carrier Corporation, a split system is an air-
conditioning or heat pump system that uses refrigerant as the heat exchanger fluid and has an
evaporator, compressor, and condenser as separate components. In most modern commercial
applications, the compressor and condenser are combined into a single piece of equipment
called a condensing unit. Refrigerant piping, custom-designed to meet the physical
requirements of each individual application, connects the system components.
There are certain advantages in using split-type system, especially in establishments like the,
multi purpose hall.
 Flexibility- split systems disregards the use of ducting, which can be a heavy factor on
the aesthetics, and allows the engineers to adjust depending on the needs of the facility.
 Simplicity considered as the simplest system for commercial applications Other systems
like the chilled water systems or centralized systems. etc, requires more components
and maintenances.
 Costs-with relevance to the simplicity of the design fewer components are needed to
have the system efficiently running unlike other systems.

The type of AC system design

The type of AC system design used in this study is a split-type system AC design This is based
on various field expert advices considered in designing an air conditioning system. The design
is also considered to be much preferable by various studies that involves the creation of such
systems in a multi purpose hall The system is also used due to its different factors which
involves its flexibility with the design, its simple outline that still highlights the aesthetics that
the multi purpose hall embodies, and its cost efficiency with the equipment and materials
Needed.

Operation and Maintenance

Manual operation
Units are equipped with a switch to run emergency operation mode. It can be accessed by
opening the front panel. This switch is used for manual operation in case the remote controller
fails to work or maintenance necessary.
1. Hold the panel sides and lift the front panel up to an angle until it remains fixed with a
clicking sound. For some models, please use suspension bars to prop up the panel
2. Once you push the manual button, the operation mode is shifted in an order as AUTO,
COOL, OFF The temperature will O O be set at 24 C/76 F and the fan on Auto.
3. After operation, close the panel firmly to its original position.
CAUTION:
 This switch is used for testing purposes only. You had better not choose it.
 To restore the remote controller operation, use the remote controller directly.

Airflow direction control

 Adjust the air flow direction properly, othewise it might cause discomfort orcause
uneven room temperatures.
 Adjust the horizontal louver using the remote controller.
 Adjust the vertical louver manually.

To set the vertical air flow(Up-Down) direction

 Perform this function while the unit is in operation. Use the remote controller to adjust
the air fiow direction The horizontal louver can be moved at O a range of 6 for each
press, or swing up and down automatically.

Please refer to the REMOTE CONTROLLER OPERATION MANUAL for details

To set the horizontal air flow direction (left-right)
 Move the deflector rod manually to adjust the air flow in the direction you
prefer,IMPORTANT Do not put your fingers into the panel of blower and suction side
The high-speed fan inside may cause danger NOTE:
 Best working conditions (the energy efficiency can be affected if not set under these
conditions) The best angle of louvers is the default angle of cooling mode The best way
of setting the angle of louvers at heating mode is run the unit for 5 minutes and then use
the remote controller to set the louvers at the default of cooling mode.

CAUTION:
 Do not operate the air conditioner for long periods with the air flow direction set
ownward in cooling or dehumidifying mode Otherwise, condensation may occur on the
surface of the horizontal louver causing moisture to drop on to thefloor or on furnishings.
 When the air conditioner is started immediately after it was stopped, the
oizontal louver might not move for approximately 10 seconds.
 Open angle of the horizontal louver should not be set to0 small, as COOLING or
HEATING performance may be impaired due to too restricted air flow area.

 Do not move the honizontal louver manually, otherwise the horizontal louver will
be out of sync. Please cease operating, unplug power for a few seconds, then
restart the air conditioner.

Before maintenance
 Turn the system off before cleaning To clean, wipe with a soft, dry cloth Do not use
bleach or abrasives NOTE Power supply must be disconnected before cleaning the
indoor unit

CAUTIONS:
 A cloth dampened with cold water may be used on the indoor unit if it is very dirty.
 Then wipe it with a dry cloth. Do not use a chemically treated cloth or duster to clean the
unit.
 Do not use benzine, thinner, polishing powder, or similar solvents for cleaning.
 These may cause the plastic surface to crack or deform.
 Never use water hotter than 40°C/104"F to clean the front panel, it could cause
deformation of discoloration.

Cleaning the unit

Wipe the unit with a soft dry cloth only. If the unit is very dirty, wipe it with a cloth Soaked in
warm water.
Cleaning the air filter and air freshening filter A clogged air filter reduces the cooling efficiency
of this unit. Please clean the filter once every 2 weeks.
1. Lift the indoor unit panel up to an angle until it stops with a clicking sound For some models,
please use suspension bars to prop up the panel.
2. Take hold of the handle of the air filter and lift it up slightly to take it out from the filter holder,
then pull it downwards.
3. Remove the AIR FILTER from the indoor unit.
