ACTIVITY SHEET:
Guiding Principles in the Use of Instructional Materials

Answer the following questions:

1. What are the instructional aids that are commonly used by college
teachers? When can each one be effectively utilized in the classroom?
Why?
Books and Videos are the commonly used instructional aids by college
teachers these days. Professors primarily used books to give guide to their
students so that the students will know what flow the professor will tackle the
subject. Books also are utilized to serve as a training tool for students
whether they are advance reading it or not. It also serves as the guide for
teachers to know whether the students can easily cope up with the subject or
need various changes. On the other hand, videos are used by professors to
show the students some step by step process that is in the book or to use as
a proxy when the teacher is out. Videos are helpful when it is informational as
well as easy to digest.

2. What are the chief uses of instructional materials in teaching?

The main use of instructional materials is to constitute alternative

channels of communication, which a teacher can use to convey more
vividly instructional information to learners.  That is why they say that “All
instructional materials are aids to instruction. They do not replace the
teacher,” this means that the teacher is still be the one responsible for
teaching the students what they need to learn, and the instructional materials
are given to further boost the lessons and aid in learning the subject.
Especially, to visual learners who learns faster with material it will be a great
help for them to understand the lessons much easier. It also helps the
learners to experience vast range of materials which can be used to 'extend
the range of vicarious experience' of learners in a teaching-learning situation.

3. What point of view should a teacher hold with respect to the place and
use of audiovisual aids in the classroom? What factors in planning
audiovisual aids indicate the effective use of these aids? What are the
criteria for the teacher’s selection and use of these materials?

The point of view should a teacher hold with respect to the place and
use of audiovisual aids in the classroom is that it provides experience not
easily obtained through other materials and contribute to the efficiency, depth

and variety of learning.

The factors in planning audiovisual aids indicate the effective use of

these aids are: Relevancy, ensure that the audiovisual aids you use are
relevant to your speech or lesson. Appropriateness, likewise, your
audiovisual aids should be appropriate to the lesson. Variation, if you are
going to use a great many audiovisual aids (and this is only recommended if
you feel that it is vital to your message), you should try to incorporate
different types of audiovisual aids. Attractiveness, an unattractive visual aid
will "speak" poorly of you and it will lessen the impact of your message
delivery.

The criteria for the teacher’s selection and use of these materials are
the following:
 Learn hot to use the instructional aid
 Prepare introductory remarks, questions or comments you may
need
 Provide a conducive environment
 Explain the objectives of the lesson
 Stress what is to be watched or listened to carefully
 State what they will be expected to do with the information they
will learn
 There is a need to summarize or review the experience.
