Ecology Worksheet #1
Main Idea: Ecologists study environments at different levels of organization.
Write a description of each level of organization in the table. Also, provide an example for each
level.

Level Description Example

1. Organism Organisms in a natural community
also play different roles within
their ecosystem.
Animals, Plants

2. Population Population is a group of

organisms belonging to the
same species that live in the
Human, Animals
same area and interact with one
another.
3. Community Community is all of the
populations of different species
that live in the same area and
human
interact with one another.
4. Ecosystem Ecosystem includes the living
organisms in an area and the
non-living aspects of the
Plants, Animals, Bacteria
environment
5. Biosphere The biosphere is the part of the Atmosphere, surface,
planet with living organisms
hydrosphere

Fill in the diagram below with the Levels of Organization studied in Ecology. Use
the terms from the table above.

Main Idea: An ecosystem includes both abiotic and biotic factors. Producers
provide energy for other organisms in an ecosystem.

Complete the following sentences with the correct term from the list below.
autotrophs nonliving heterotrophs producers plants biotic living
eating abiotic temperature moisture animals consumers nonliving

6. All ecosystems are made up of biotic and abiotic components.

7. Biotic factors are living things, such as producer or consumer.
8. Abiotic factors are non-living things, such as wind, temperature, or moisture.
9. Autotrophs are organisms that get their energy from sunlight resources, meaning
they make their own food. These organisms are also called producer.
10. Heterotroph are organisms that get their energy by consuming other organisms.
These organisms are also called consumer.
11. Why are producers so important to an ecosystem?
Producer is very important to produce our food. It also to our ecosystem to
support through constant energy and biomass.

KEY CONCEPT: Food chains and food webs model the flow of energy in an
ecosystem. Choose the correct term from the box below to fit each description.

carnivore omnivore decomposer secondary consumer tertiary consumer

herbivore detritivore trophic levels primary consumer

12. I eat only plants. I am a(n) herbivore.

13. I eat only other animals. I am a(n) carnivore.
14. I eat both plants and animals. I am a(n) omnivore.
15. I eat dead organic matter. I am a(n) detritivore.
16. I break down organic matter into simpler compounds. I am a(n) decomposer.
17. I am the first consumer above the producer level. I am a(n) primary consumer.
18. I am a carnivore that eats herbivores. I am a(n) secondary consumer.
19. I am a carnivore that eats other carnivores. I am a(n) tertiary consumer.
20. The levels of nourishment in a food chain are called trophic levels.
21. How is a food web different from a food chain?

Food chains show a single path of energy flow through and ecosystem. It shows a single
item that an organism eats, but a food web shows all the different paths of energy flow and
multiple items organisms eat.
22. Label the four tiers of the energy pyramid with the correct trophic level
(producers, primary consumers, secondary consumers, and tertiary consumers).
Choose an ecosystem. Research what types of plants and animals live in your
chosen ecosystem. Fill in the energy pyramid with what might exist with that
ecosystem.

Q. Niche

Use the following diagram to answer the following questions.

16. What is the producer in the food we above? Grass

17. Energy flows from the mouse to the Snake and Owl.

18. The primary consumers are Caterpillar, Mouse, Grasshopper.

19. The secondary consumers are Bird, Snake and Frog.

20. The owl is a secondary consumer if it eats the snake, but a tertiary (third order) consumer if it eats the
mouse , grasshopper or caterpillar.
THE MAJOR PROBLEMS CAUSED BY INDUSTRIALIZATION

1. What are the major problems caused by industrialization?

Industrialization makes weak our air, water, soil and habitat because of pollution.
Yes, we all know they part of our modernization they build factories, commercial
building and other businesses that can help people that need work for their needs
everyday life but can cause of destruction of our ecosystem.

2. Enumerate them and explain briefly how each problem affect our ecosystem, in
general.

a. Soil – is contamination to any kind of crop grows.

b. water – contamination to the water coming from the factories like toxins and
waste.

c. air – pollution coming from the factories and utility vehicles.

d. habitat – all kinds of organisms from the ecosystem is endanger because of

modernization , they can’t survive cause of climate change.

3. As a student, how can you do to eradicate or lessen these impacts/problems caused

by industrialization? Give at least 5 ways.

  1. Choose affordable and eco-friendly materials.

2. Use biodegradable than plastic.

3. Promote man power than machine equipment.

4. Proper disposal of chemicals and wastes.

5. Support and protect our environment.

Put your answers to these tasks given in an A4 sized-paper. font size=12, font
