ACTIVITY 2: TIME TO READ!

DUAL SPORTS
It is played by two people striving against one another competing against an opponent with the ultimate goal to win.
These include but not limited to: Badminton, Lawn Tennis, Table Tennis, Martial Arts/Combative Sports etc.

A) BADMINTON – A net game played on a rectangular court where opponents volley shuttlecock over a net using a racket. The aim of the game is to score points by
landing the shuttlecock in the opponent’s court. Matches for Badminton include singles, doubles and mixed doubles.

BADMINTON HOLD GRIP

1. Forehand/Handshake Grip – the thumb and pointing fingers wrapped around the handle forming a letter V while the rest of the fingers are spread supporting the
bottom part of the handle.
2. Backhand Grip – used to hit the shuttle at a non-dominant side of the body.

BASIC STROKES OR HITS

1. Clear- done with the stroke above the head, the shuttle travelling up targeting the long service line.
2. Lob- done with the stroke below the head about waist level, the shuttle travelling up.
3. Drop- usually done with the stroke above the head, the shuttle travelling up but dropping just near the net.
4. Net drop/shot- done with a stroke below the head, the shuttle travelling just barely touching the net and landing near it.
5. Drive- done with the stroke about the level of the head, the shuttle travelling straight of flat the net.
6. Smash- done with the stroke above the head, the shuttle travelling down with power and speed.

BADMINTON BASIC RULES

1. SCORING – A score is earned when a fault has been made such as if service is not correct, the shuttle lands outside the boundaries of the court, touches the
person or dress of the player, and touches a player’s racket and does not travel towards the opponent’s court. The match shall consist of the best of three games
wherein a game shall be won by the side which scores points. If the score becomes 20 all, the side that gains 2-point lead first shall win the game.
2. SERVICE – is done with the contact of the racket with the whole shuttlecock below the server’s waist. It is done diagonally. Even score serves on the right side of
the court while the odd score serves on the left side of the court. The side winning a game shall serve first in the next game.
3. BASIC EQUIPMENT
-Racket- The badminton racket is one of the most important tools a player has in the game. Badminton rackets are much lighter than most other sports rackets
because they are made from materials such as carbon fiber or lighter metals such as aluminum.
-Shuttlecock- also referred to as a shuttle or birdie, acts similarly to a ball in other racket sports. However, the design of the birdie creates more drag as it is
propelled through the air due to its feathered shape. The shuttlecock is made up of a cone shape with a hard cork at its tip.
-Net- A mesh net divides the badminton court into two sides. A badminton net is placed lower than a volleyball net at five feet and one inch high on the sides and five
feet high in the center. The length may vary depending on whether doubles or singles are playing, with singles reaching 17 feet and doubles reaching 22 feet. The
net is 30 inches wide with a 3-inch white tape doubled over the top.

B) LAWN TENNIS- is a racket sport that can be played individually against a single opponent or between two teams of two players each. Each player uses a tennis
racket that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's court.
LAWN TENNIS BASIC GRIPs
1. Forehand grip 2. Backhand grip 3. Double forehand grip 4. Double backhand grip

BASIC LAWN TENNIS STROKES

1. Serve- A serve is the first shot to start a point in a game of tennis. The player hits the ball so that it is directed to the opposite service box in a diagonal direction
without hitting the net. Typically, players complete this stroke by tossing the tennis ball in the air and hitting it as it comes down towards them.
2. Forehand- There are two ways in which a forehand stroke can be used. The first is to return a serve and the second is an open stance forehand. The open stance
refers to the way that most players today hit their forehands with their legs in an open stance as it not only allows for more power, but it also allows for a quicker
recovery after the shot is played.
3. Backhand- Some players struggle with the backhand stroke as it is a bit trickier, and less natural, than the forehand stroke. The basic mechanics require the player
to swing the racket around their body so that the back of their hand proceeds their palm as they move the racket forward to meet the ball. Players who are right-
handed will begin with the racquet on the left side of their body, and vice versa for left-handed players.
4. Volley- Sometimes considered the easiest stroke in tennis, the volley is quite simple in technique. It requires the player to block the ball in the air, which means
that there is little to no backswing required. Unlike other strokes, volleys involve hitting the ball before it hits the ground.
5. Half Volley- The half volley, however, is quite tricky and requires excellent eyesight and timing on the part of the player. Essentially, the player tries to hit the ball
almost immediately after it hits the ground and begins to rise. The ball should be hit before it reaches the apex of its bounce.
6. Overhead- The overhead, or smash, is made while the ball is still above the player’s head in a motion that is similar to the serve. It is typically hit with so much
power that it ends the point in the favor of the one who completed the smash.
7. Drop Shot- A drop shot is perhaps one of the most frustrating shots to be on the receiving end of. If performed correctly, the ball will land just over the net making it
nearly impossible for the opponent to return.
8. Lob- A lob stroke sends the ball high and deep into the opponent’s court. This can be used for either offensive or defensive strategies depending on the situation in
the game. One risk, however, is creating a situation in which the opponent can return with a drop shot to win the point.

LAWN TENNIS BASIC RULES

1. Scoring- The word "love" means zero points. The first point is "15"; the second, "30"; the third point is "40"; and the fourth, "game." The server always calls his
score first. If the game ties at 40/40, the score is "deuce." The next point played will be advantage in, shortened to "ad in," meaning the server is ahead one point, or
advantage out, shortened to "ad out," meaning the receiver is ahead one point. The next point will be either game for the player leading or deuce again. Players must
win six games to gain a set, and a set needs to be won by two games. A set tied at 5-5 is won by a player who takes the next two games. If the set goes to 6-6, a
tiebreak is required. Tiebreaks are scored in points as "zero," "1," "2," "3," and so on until a player scores "7." The tiebreak also needs to be won by two points.
Matches typically comprise the best of three sets, or the best of five.
2. Playing a Point- Players flip a coin to see who serves first. The server begins from the deuce side, behind the baseline, and the ball must land in the service box of
the opponent's deuce side. The server gets two chances to get the serve in. Otherwise, he loses the point. He must serve the next point from the ad side to the
service box of the opponent's ad side. Servers continue to switch between the deuce and ad sides after each point is played. The opponent must hit the serve back
anywhere within or on the lines to the opponent's end of the court after one bounce. If the ball lands anywhere on the line, it's a good ball. After the service return is
struck and is good, players no longer have to let the ball bounce once; they can hit the ball before it bounces, but the ball can never bounce more than once.
3. BASIC EQUIPMENT
-Rackets can be made of many alloys or wood. There are no restrictions on the size or materials used in making a racket. It has an oval head and a gradually
widening throat that connects the narrow handle with the head of the racket. The head of the racket is tightly woven with strings which are made of various materials
like nylon, gut or synthetic gut. The handles are covered with leather or nylon for a better grip.
-Ball- As per ITF rules, Tennis balls are yellow or green colored spherical balls, with a diameter between 2.5 and 2.625 inches. They weigh between 2 and 21/16 oz.
Pressurized rubber is used to make semi spherical half shells. They are then joined with compressed air between them. The spherical balls are covered with bright
yellow colored felt. Kids aged ten and under play with different colored balls. They move slower, bounce lower. They are also softer and larger and are easy for kids
to hit them.
-Net- A rectangular net is used to separate the two sides of a Tennis court. The net should cover the space between the two net posts. The net is woven in such a
way that it does not allow the Tennis ball to pass through. It is usually tied in about 3 feet above the ground at the center.

C) TABLE TENNIS- also known as ping-pong and whiff-whaff, is a sport in which two or four players hit a lightweight ball, also known as the ping-pong ball, back and
forth across a table using small rackets. The game takes place on a hard table divided by a net.

1. Penhold- This hold got its name, as it resembles holding a pen. Here the player’s middle, ring, little fingers are curled around the racquet. This style of holding the
racquet is called Chinese pen holding. Even though many players have this way of holding the racquet, their style of play is entirely different.
Another style of penhodling is the Japanese/ Korean style. In this style, the three fingers are across the back of the racquet. Players who have Chinese penholding
style prefer round racquet head, whereas the one who have the Korean style, prefer square-shaped racquet head.
2. Shakehand- As the name suggests, this type of grip resembles one shaking a hand. This hold is also called the Western grip as many players of Europe and
America use this style of holding a racquet.
3. Seemiller- In the Seemiller grip, the racket is held similarly to the shakehand grip, but with a 90 degree turn so that the thumb and index finger are used to grip the
sides of the bat. Both forehand and backhand are played with the same side of the bat, although the bat can be turned to use the other side.

Seemiller
Types of Strokes: In Table Tennis Table Sports, two types of strokes exist:
1. Offensive Strokes 2. Defensive Strokes
Offensive Strokes: It is the stroke where 5 conditions occur and these are as following:
1.Speed Drive: This stroke is generally used to keep the ball in play, apply pressure on the opponent and potentially opening up an opportunity for a powerful attack.
It is a direct hit propelling it forward back to the opponent. In this the racket is primarily perpendicular to the direction of stroke after that the energy is applied to the
ball that results in speed rather than the spin that creates a shot that does not create arc but it is fast enough and difficult to make return by the opponent.
2. Loop: It is considered as the reverse of speed drive, in this the racket is parallel to the direction of the stroke and then the racket hit the ball that results in creating
topspin. A good loop will make arc quite a bit and once striking from the opponent’s side of the table will jump forward.
3. Counter Drive: The counter drives are considered as the high loop drives; in this the racket is closest to the ball and hit immediately after hitting the table so that
the ball travels faster to the other side.
4. Flick: When a player tries to hit the ball that has not bounced to the edge of table and player does not have the room to wind up in a backswing. After that the ball
still be attacked and resulting a shot called flick because the backswing is converted into quick wrist action and that stroke can be resemble as drive or loop.
5. Smash: This stroke is used by player when his opponent returned a ball that bounces too high or too close to the net and then player use large backswing and
rapid acceleration that results as much speed on the ball as possible. The main goal of smash is to get the ball to move so quickly that the opponent cannot simply
return it.

Defensive Strokes: In this stroke 4 conditions occur and these are as following:
1. Push: It is used to keep the point alive and create offensive opportunities and it resembles tennis slice as the racket cuts underneath the ball by communicating
backspin and causing the ball to float slowly to the other side of table. A push is difficult to attack because the backspin on the ball causes it to drop toward the table
upon striking the opponent’s racket. If you want to attack a push, a player must usually loop the ball back over the net. 2. Chop: It is considered as a bigger, heavier
push and can be taken well back from the table. In this stroke, the racket face points must be horizontally and little bit upward and then the direction of stroke would
be straight down. If the ball comes with enormous amount of backspin, this kind of chop is difficult to return.
3. Block: It is a simple shot and executing by just placing the racket in front of the ball right after the ball bounces that result in the ball to rebound back toward the
opponent with same energy as it come in with. In this situation, it is possible for an opponent to execute a perfect loop, drive or smash.
4. Lob: It is considered as the most impressive shot of the defensive stroke because it pushes the ball about five meters in height towards the land on the opponent’s
side of the table with spin. To execute this stroke, players must firstly back off towards the table up to 4-6 meters and then the stroke consists of lifting the ball to an
enormous height before it falls back to the opponent’s side of the table. It is considered as the best shot that can have any kind of spin.

TABLE TENNIS BASIC RULES

1. Scoring and Games- Games are played to 11 points
- Players serve two serves each, alternating. A player does not have to win specifically off their own serve in order to win a point
- If a game ties at 10-10, a player must win by 2 points. In this situation, players serve one serve each, alternating
- In competition, games are played best of 5 (first to win 3 games) or best of 7 (first to win 4 games). Social games can also be played best of 3 (first to win 2 games)
2. Legal Serving- You must throw the ball up straight, from a flat palm, at least 6 inches (16cm)
- Your toss and service contact must be behind the table surface (not over)
- You cannot hide the ball from the ball toss to contact, with any part of your body
- If the ball hits the net during service, it is a let, the point is replayed. There is no limit or point deductions for let serves.
3. Equipment Basics
- A table tennis racket must be one side black, one side (recently approved) any approved color
- The official approved ball is the 40mm+ plastic ball
- The dimensions of an approved table tennis table are: 9ft long, 5ft wide, 2.5ft high
- The approved height of a table tennis net is: 6 inches
