Term to Understand

 Media Literacy

• The ability to read, analyze, evaluate and produce communication in a variety of

media forms. (UNESCO, 2011)
• A skill that we take for granted, but like all skills, it can be improved. And if we
consider how important the mass media in creating and maintaining the culture
that helps define us and our lives, it is a skill that must be improved. (Baran,
2002)
• Deals more with a person’s ability to critically consume, understand, analyze,
evaluate, and produce any type of media. (Philippine Copyright 2017)

 Information Literacy

• The ability to recognize when information is needed and to locate, evaluate,

effectively use and communicate information in its various formats. (UNESCO,
2011)
• The ability to know when there is a need for more information and the ability to
locate, evaluate, and use the right information according to that need. (Philippine
Copyright 2017)

 Technology (Digital) Literacy

• The ability to use digital technology, communication tools or networks to locate,

evaluate, use, and create information. (UNESCO, 2011)
• Focuses more on a person’s ability to effectively use technology tools. A perfect
example of this is how one can use a smartphone or a laptop to access,
understand, evaluate, create, and communicate information.(Philippine Copyright

and Information Literacy? Discover more! Just keep going with our activities.

Activity 2.3: Venn diagram

Directions: Compare and contrast the similarities and differences of is Media Literacy, Information
Literacy, Technology Literacy using a Venn diagram.

VENN DIAGRAM
MEDIA LITERACY

 Media Literacy is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and create media.

 Media Literate Youth and Adults are better able to understand the complete messages we
receive from television, radio, internet, newspapers, magazines, books, billboards, video games,
music, and all other forms of media.

 Information Literacy is knowing when and why you need information, where to find it, and how
to evaluate, use and communicate it in an ethical manner.

Increasingly, information is available in unfiltered formats, raising questions about its

authenticity, validity, and reliability. This abundance of information is of little help to those who
have not learned how to use it effectively.

Media literacy and information Literacy have always been linked. But the greater
accessibility of content via the internet and mobile platforms has meant that those literacies are
increasingly interested.

UNESCO considers information literacy and media literacy together as media and
information literacy (MIL). It includes information and communication literacy and digital literacy.

Media and information literacy empowers citizens to access, retrieve, understand,

evaluate and use, create, as well as share information and media content in all formats.

Using various tools, in a critical, ethical, and effective way, in order to participate and
engage in personal, professional, and societal activities.
