Using MPR to Reinforce Advertising and Promotion


Marketing public relations rarely stands alone. It is most effective when it works
strategically with advertising and promotion to meet marketing goals. MPR is used both
to complement and supplement advertising. It can extend the advertising message by
delivering different but complementary messages to the same mass audience. It can also
complement advertising in mass media by reaching discrete or specialized demographic,
pyschographic, ethnic, or regional audiences with specifically targeted messages. On
other occasions, MPR might complement consumer advertising by influencing influential
who in turn influence the consumer.
Alternatively, MPR can be used to supplement the advertising campaign by
carrying the same message to the same or different markets. By using a variety of media
not included in the ad budget, MPR can extend the reach of advertising and make it work
harder.
MPR can also be used to test marketing and positioning concepts. Public relations
pioneered the fitness walking concept that because the Rockport Company’s total
marketing thrust and the basis of its advertising. Likewise, Campbell Soup Company
developed the healthful eating concept as a public relations program before it became the
national advertising campaign.
