Scope This Japanese Industrial Standard specifies the measuring method of carbon monoxide in the exhaust gas of automobile provided with a spark ignition engine, hereinafter referred to as the "vehicle", at the time of idling. 2. Measuring Condition 2.1 Atmospheric Condition The ambient conditions of vehicles and meaauring eppeiatines shall be the crdinary:tomperstive ahd! ordinary humidity as specified in JIS Z 8703 and the ambient temperature of the measuring apparatus during measurement shall be kept at + 5°C of the temperature of at the time of calibration as specified in JIS D 8006. Further, the measuring apparatus shall not be exposed to direct rays of sun or wind and rain directly. 2.2 Conditions of Engine and Vehicle The conditions of engine and vehicle ye as follows: (1) The vehicle shall be kept in the nearely horizontal state. (2) All auxiliaries other than required for the independent running shall be kept in the state of OFF. (3) In the case of the vehicle with a manual speed change gear, the position of gear shall be at Neutral and that of clutch shall be at ON and further, in the case of the vehicle with an automatic speed change gear, the position of gear shall be at N or P. Remark: N: neutral position (abbreviation of neutral) P: parking position (abbreviation of parking) (4) The engine hood shall be closed and the outside cooling fan shall not be used, Applicable Standards: JIS D 8006-Simplified Carbonmonoxide Testers for Automobiles JIS Z 8703-Standard Atmospheric Conditions for Testing Corresponding International Standai 180 3929-1976 —Road vehicles-Determination of exhaust carbon monoxide concentration at idle speed) D 1028-1983 2.3 Preparation of Engine and Vehicle The preparation of engine and vehicle shall be as follows: — ae be 4, (1) Warm up the engine preliminarily so that the actuation of auxiliary devices (such as choke) at the cold time is not required. Confirm the completion of warming up (1) by measuring that the engine has attained to the normal thermal condition by a water thermometer and the like. Note (1) Where the description of warming up is made in the instruc~ tion manual of the vehicle concerned follow it. (2) Keep a stable idling condition and take the value specified for that vehicle by the manufacturer as the number of idling revolutions and the ignition time. Measuring Apparatus ‘The measuring apparatus shall be as follows: (1) The measuring apparatus shall be one capable of measuring the con~ centration of carbon monoxide in the exhaust gas in the state of idle running of automobile and further, shall have the function as speci- fied in JIS D 8006 and shall have been. prepared properly for use. (2) The operating method of measuring apparatus shall be in accordance with the instruction manual equipped to that measuring apparatus. Measuring Method The measuring method shall be as follows: (Q) Confirm that the exhaust system and measuring system are free from leakage. (2) Run for at least 15 s at the moderate number of revolutions with no load quickly after warming up and then return to the state of idling. (3) After the engine has returned to the state of idling, insert the sampling tube not less than 60 cm (7)(*) in the exhaust outlet promptly to take the sample. After about 20 s, measure the concen- tration of carbon monoxide by the measuring apparatus as specified in 3, Provided that where there are exhaust outlets of plural number, connect them with the collecting pipe having a single outlet at the end to take the sample. Where there is not an adequate collecting pipe, the sample may be taken from each exhaust outlet. Where the sample is taken from each exhaust outlet, measure the concentration of carbon monoxide at each exhaust outlet and obtain the arithmetic mean from the measured values. Notes (2) In the case of the four cycle engine free from effects of the dilution due to the atmosphere, the insert of not less than 30 cm is permitted. (3) Where the depth of insertion is not obtained as specified, the extention pipe shall be used.
