JAPANESE INDUSTRIAL STANDARD 1s
General Rules of Running Test Method of Automobiles D 1010-1982
(Reaffirmed: 1992)
1, Scope
‘This Japanese Industrial Standard specifies the general rules governing the run-
ning test method for automobile
2, Test Method
2.1 Test Items The running test shall be made on the items enumerated below.
The items, however, may be partially omitted as the type and purpose of automobile
demand:
(1) Galibration of Speedometers (To be performed in accordance with JIS D
TOI.)
(2) Fuel Consumption Test (To be performed in accordance with JIS D 1012.)
(3) Brake Test (To be performed in accordance with JIS D 1013.)
(4) Acceleration Test (To be performed in accordance with JIS D 1014.)
(5) Coasting Test (To be performed in accordance with JIS D 1015.)
(6) Maximum Speed Test (To be performed in accordance with JIS D 1016.)
(7) Climbing Steep Hill Test (To be performed in accordance with JIS D 1017.)
(8) Long Climbing Hill Test (To be performed in accordance with JIS D 1018.)
(9) Traction Test (To be performed in accordance with JIS D 1019.)
(10) Sand Ground Test (To be performed in accordance with JIS D 1020.)
(12) Starting Test (‘To be performed in accordance with JIS D 1021.)
(12) Driving Test (To be performed in accordance with JIS D 1022.)
(13) Qverhauled Inspection (‘To be performed in accordance with JIS D 1023.)
2.2 Preparation of Automobile to be Tested
2.2.1 The automobile to be tested shall be equipped suitably according to the
purpose of test, and shall be under the loaded condition, unless otherwise specified.
‘The loaded condition implies the condition such that an unladen automobile is
ridden by a number of persons equal to the riding capacity and loaded with a quantity
of goods equivalent to the maximum loading mass. In that, the mass for one riding
capacity is assumed to be 55 kg, the persons for the seating capacity shall be seated
in the specified positions, the persons for the standing capacity shall be riding uni-
formly in the standing positions, and the goods shall be loaded uniformly on the goods
carrying device. By the total mass under this condition is meant the grose vehicle
mas
Applicable Standards: See page 6,2
D 1010 - 1982
‘The unladed condition implies the condition under which the automobile is equip
ped with necessary equipment for driving (excluding the spare tyre and parts, tool:
and other hand laggages), i.e., the automobile is full of fuel, lubricating oil and
cooling water in the engine and fuel system, and fitted with necessary fixed installa-
tions. By the mass under this condition is meant the vehicle ma
2.2.2 The specifications of the automobile to be tested shall be prepared by mak-
ing @ study before the test, and according to these, the engine, transmission gear,
steering gear, brake, tyre inflation pressure (in cold state), etc. shall be adjusted
and conditioned, in advance,
Warming-up shall have been finished, as a rule.
2.3 Testing Apparatus Of the testing apparatus, the following are generally used:
‘These apparatus shall be checked always before every use for the ascertainment of
properness of function, errors, etc.
(1) Tape measure
(2) Marking poles
(3) Semaphore flags
(4) Microchronometer
(5) Thermometer
(6) Suction pressure gauge
(7) Anemometer
(8) Fuelometer
(9) Gradient indicator
(10) Stamping device for brake test
(11) Pedal pressure gauge
(12) Dynamometer type brake tester
(13) Traction wire rope
2,4 Testing Site Testing site shall be chosen by reference to the following prin-
ciples according to test items,
(1) The tests enumerated below shall be carried out on a flat and horizontal
straight paved road.
Calibration of speedometer
Fuel consumption test
Brake test
Acceleration test
Coasting test
Maximum speed test3
D 1010-1982
(2) The climbing steep hill test shall be carried out on a steep-slope road of an
uniform grade as far as possible, and it is required that the road surface
does not permit tyre-slipping.
(3) For the long climbing hill and traction tests, the road need not be paved, but
is required to be under good condition.
(4) For the driving test, a typical road on which the automobile under test will
run in actual service, shall be chosen, and it should advisably include a
variety of road surfaces, slopes, etc.
(5) For the starting test, particularly the cold weather starting test is often
required. In that case, it is convenient to choose a cold district or to carry
out the test in a cold chamber, if possible.
2.5 Measuring Method
2.5.1 To diminish measuring errors, for the test running of the automobile under
test, a time when the wind speed is 3 m/s or less shall Le chosen as far as possible,
and for the test running ona level road, go-and-return runs shall be made, as a rule,
and the average of the two measurements shall be taken,
2.5.2 The measurement of the temperature of radiator coolant, temperature of
oil in the oil pan, temperature of oil in speed change gearbox and reduction gearbox
shall be made by directly dipping @ thermometer in the water or oil.
‘The measurement of the temperature of coolant in the radiator at the final stop-
ping of the traction test, slope climbing test, etc., shall in general be carried out
while the engine is idling, but not after turning-off,
2.5.3 In the case of measuring the speed with the speedometer equipped on the
automobile, it is required that its errors have been checked before testing by the
calibration of speedometer in accordance with the specified method.
2.5.4 For the tests enumerated below, the engine and other parts of the auto-
mobile are required to have been warmed up into the running condition by making a
preparatory running before commencement of the tests,
Fuel consumption test
Coasting test
Acceleration test
Maximum speed test
Climbing steep hill test
