3 Hyperbolic Functions 1
Note. Recall that cos x and sin x are sometimes called the circular func-
tions. This is because we can plot a point P on the circle x2 + y 2 = 1 by
letting P = (cos u, sin u) where u is twice the area of the sector determined
by A = (1, 0), O = (0, 0) and P :
Note. We will use the exponential function to define the hyperbolic trig
functions.
Definition. We define
ex + e−x
Hyperbolic cosine of x: cosh x =
2
ex − e−x
Hyperbolic sine of x: sinh x =
2
sinh x ex − e−x
Hyperbolic tangent x: tanh x = =
cosh x ex + e−x
cosh x ex + e−x
Hyperbolic cotangent of x: coth x = =
sinh x ex − e−x
1 2
Hyperbolic secant of x: sech x = = x
cosh x e + e−x
1 2
Hyperbolic cosecant of x: csch x = = x
sinh x e − e−x
7.3 Hyperbolic Functions 4
cosh2 x − sinh2 x = 1
coth2 x = 1 + csch 2x

[ csch u] = − csch u coth u

Note. Since [sinh x] = cosh x > 0, then sinh x is an INCreasing
dx
function and so is one-to-one. The function cosh x is not one-to-one as we
can see from the graph. The function sech x = 1/ cosh x is also not one-
to-one. Therefore, to define the inverse functions of cosh x and sech x,
we must restrict the domains.
−1
Define y = sech x if x = sech y and y ∈ [0, ∞). (The domain is
then x ∈ (0, 1].)
7.3 Hyperbolic Functions 8
Note. The graphs of the above defined three inverse hyperbolic trig
functions are:

√
sinh x = ln(x + x2 + 1), x ∈ (−∞, ∞).

√ !
1+ 1−x 2
sech −1 x = ln , x ∈ (0, 1].

√ !
1 1+x 2
csch −1 x = ln + , x ∈ (−∞, 0) ∪ (0, ∞).

7.3 Hyperbolic Functions 10
