ECTE412/812/912: Power Electronics and Drives Spring 2020

School of Electrical, Computer and Telecommunications Engineering

I declare

The answers that I submit here are my own work and that I have not colluded with any others in
answering the questions.

I have not taken any additional copies of the exam paper or of my answers other than the paper
submitted here.

I will delete the files, photos and documents that contain exam questions and answers immediately
after submission of my answers through Moodle.

I will not pass any information about the questions and answers to anybody during or after my exam.

DIRECTIONS TO CANDIDATES
Students will be required to include hand-written answers (with sufficient details) in
the spaces provided and upload the single pdf file (inclusive of all the answers) using
the submission link provided on the Moodle site within a 3hour window
(commencing from 11am AEST on 25 August 2020). Accordingly, the submission site
will be closed at 2pm AEST on the same day (i.e., on Tuesday 25 August 2020). The
exam must be completed as a write-on-exam by writing the answers in the blank
spaces (or on separate hand written A4 pages with clear indication of the answers to
related questions if you have difficulties in printing the write-on-exam paper) and
uploaded to the Moodle site in one pdf file using the submission link provided. To
avoid last minute internet issues (closer to the submission deadline of 2pm AEST on
25 August 2020), you should complete the submissions in advance, as late submission
will not be accepted. Also, you need to add your name and student number on page 1
of the submitted file. It is to be noted that the maximum allowable file size (in pdf
format) is 20 MB. If you have any general query, please join the Webex meeting
(Weekly Tutorial) during 11:00am to 11:30am on the exam day.

Q1. A DC-DC boost converter has an input voltage, Vs = 9 V. The average output voltage, Va = 15 V and
average load current, Ia = 0.8 A. The switching frequency is 20 kHz. If L = 300 μH and C = 440 μF.
(a) Draw the circuit for the boost converter (using power MOSFET and diode) showing symbol for
all variables, and also showing all current direction and voltage polarity.
(b) Derive and calculate the duty ratio D in terms of the output and input voltages for this operation.
(c) Determine (i) the ripple current of inductor (peak to peak), (ii) the peak current of inductor, (iii)
the ripple voltage of filter capacitor (peak to peak), and (iv) the critical value of L.

Q2. Consider a buck converter in which the supply voltage Vs = 50 V, the output voltage is Vo = 30 V, the
inductance is L = 250 μH, the capacitance is C = 400 μF and with a switching frequency of 10 kHz. The
converter supplies a load of R = 10 ohm.
(a) Draw the circuit for the buck converter (using power MOSFET and diode) showing symbol for all
variables, and also showing all current direction and voltage polarity.
(b) Sketch to scale on the graph paper provided on page 4 (clearly label both x- and y- axis with the
appropriate units, and clearly showing the average value and the maximum and minimum value of
the: (i) diode voltage, (ii) inductor current, (iii) capacitor current and (iv) switch (MOSFET)
current.
